Blog: WILL KING – FOUNDER OF KING OF SHAVES – GIVES TIPS ON THE PERFECT SHAVE (30.04.10)
Back in the day, April 1993 to be exact when I founded King of Shaves and launched our original shaving oil, there wasn't a whole lot out there for men to 'shave great, look great' with. How times have changed! Now, there are entire 'beauty languages' for men - but the basic premise remains the same - PSP - or 'Prime, Shave, Protect'. This was a little slogan we came up with many years ago, which should allow men to make the most out of their time in the bathroom, before the wife, girlfriend or partner demands entrance!
Over the years I have fine tuned my shaving routine and using good products along with that really does give the perfect shave.
First, don't get stuck into shaving as soon as you wake up. Your skin goes to sleep overnight and needs a little while to wake itself up. So, jump in the shower, give yourself a once over, with a quality bodywash or shower gel. Then it's time to 'Prime' your face for the shave; by this I mean a bit of preparation, so use a mild exfoliator - King of Shaves does one. However, I wouldn’t recommend doing this every day - shaving itself exfoliates so you don’t want to be too rough on your skin.
Then it's time to Shave - ideally in the shower, as warm and wet hair is easier to cut through. I would recommend our new Azor M (but hey, I would say that), but definitely with a low foam or no foam shaving oil, serum or gel - far better than white foamy chemical stuff, which comes out of a can and is bad for skin. Shave using short strokes, in the direction of beard growth, don’t try to shave against the grain, as this will lead to irritation and ingrown hairs, also make sure you rinse the razor frequently to get the best out of your blades. Start with the cheeks, move to the chin and then the neck on either side of the face and the moustache area to finish. Use your fingers to feel the result, it’s often better than just looking in the mirror.
Finally protect - with a moisturiser with a minimum SPF of 8. My favorite is King of Shaves K-24 SPF8 moisturiser, which feels great just after a shave, but there are loads of good ones out there.
You're good to go - get out there, and live life like a King!

Treatment Review: THE NEW BERGDORF BELLE, HEADMASTERS BLOW-DRY COLLECTION 2010 (30.04.10)
What it promises: A classic Upper East Side blow dry with an edge that promises to give your long locks, volume and loose waves which will bounce as you strut.
What happens: My hair was given a thorough cleanse and condition with Kérastase Bain Age Recharge shampoo and conditioner, before a gentle towel dry and application of products. For extra height and to get rid of any unwanted frizz, Tecni.Art by L’Oreal Volume Lift and Tecni.Art by L'Oreal Liss Control were applied to damp hair. Starting from the front of the head, the hair was then blown out with a large bristle brush before it was wrapped around a heated brush and then replaced with rollers. Once the hair had cooled, it was lightly brushed out with a Mason Pearson brush and given an extra shine boost with a gentle spritz of Redken Vinyl Glam 2 Mega Shine Spray.
Results: My hair felt light, soft and voluminous – and it really did bounce as I walked. The look was very polished, without looking like I had obviously just had a blow-dry. The whole experience feels more like a pampering treatment than a salon appointment – with the added bonus of looking great as you step out of the salon.
Price: A blow-dry starts at £24 at Headmasters depending on the level of the stylist.
Location: Headmasters, 11-12 Hanover Street, London, W1S 1YQ

Feature: LUXE BEAUTY (30.04.10)
Keen to upgrade your beauty cabinet? Cast your eyes over our selection of the most luxurious and indulgent products on beauty counters now…

GOLD
Gold has been a symbol of wealth, desirability and success throughout history – and its use in beauty is nothing new. In ancient times it was considered the source of immortality and Egyptian Queen Cleopatra, arguably the most famous beauty addict, is said to have slept in a gold face mask every night to maintain her legendary good looks. In China, it is considered to possess healing powers. Aside from creating an impression of exclusivity, gold is included as an ingredient for its reported benefits, from anti-aging and anti-bacterial properties to glistening finishing touches.
Hair removal is rarely synonymous with pampering, but if you want to add a touch of indulgence to your waxing look no further than Hari’s Salon where Golden Strip Waxing is offered, from £20 (www.harissalon.com). Making use of gold’s natural antiseptic properties, this treatment includes molten 24-carat gold and leaves a gentle shimmer on skin.
Add opulence to your daily regime by conditioning skin with a gold infused moisturiser, such as Carita Perfect Cream for Body, £174 (0207 313 8780), which contains pure gold to disguise imperfections, along with anti-aging and hydrating benefits. Presented in a weighty tub destined to take pride of place on your dressing table, this sumptuous cream is reminiscent of traditional luxury.
Those who prefer the speed and softness of body oils should try Omorovicza Gold Shimmer Oil, £50 (www.omorovicza.com), which includes the precious ingredient for its anti-inflammatory properties, helping to calm sensitive skin. The oil adds a grown-up shimmer, ideal for evenings and can also be applied to hair to add a luminous golden veil.
Products containing gold are worth looking out for in the summer, as the light-reflecting particles highlight bronzed skin. Guerlain have updated their legendary Terracotta Bronzer in a new 4 Seasons version, £45 (01932 233 887), sure to be an instant sell-out. For the first time, the compact includes four different tones to illuminate the skin without adding unnatural iridescence. To complete the look, Yves Saint Laurent’s Golden Glosses, £20 (www.houseoffraser.co.uk), contain 24 carat gold powder for a subtle shimmer – and they are just the thing to add a hint of glamour to otherwise pared-down makeup. Meanwhile, if you are seeking extra nourishment, try By Terry Or de Rose Baume Precieux, £45 (www.spacenk.co.uk), which contains pink gold for a feminine sheen and leaves lips looking plumped.

DIAMONDS
Don’t wait for a man to buy you that rock, treat yourself! Regarded as “a girl’s best friend”, it comes as little surprise that high-end beauty companies are adding diamonds to their list of ingredients.
Crème de la Mer is inextricably linked to luxury, with their cult cream being at the top of even the most demanding A-lister’s beauty wish list. Their body scrub was never going to be a salt or sugar affair – instead, they have selected diamonds, with each tube of The Body Refiner, £77 (www.cremedelamer.co.uk) containing 1.75 carats of pure diamond dust to leave skin supple and glimmering. Loretta Miraglia, Senior Vice President of Product Development and Innovation explains the lavish choice, “To create the most effective exfoliator on earth, we incorporated the hardest material on earth- diamonds. When diamonds are crushed and polished, they provide an extremely thorough yet gentle exfoliation.”
The use of diamonds for buffing purposes has also been explored by Diamancel for a range of highly effective nail and foot files, from £25 (www.blisslondon.co.uk), made with industrial grade diamonds for strength and nickel coated fibreglass for flexibility. The files are tough on calluses and rough skin and shape nails, without snagging, with professional precision. £25 may seem pricey compared to traditional emery files, but the results speak for themselves - try once and you’ll never look back.
If the thought of luxury is incomplete without being pampered at a spa, check out Spa NK where Spanish Brand, Natura Bisse offer their Age-Defying Diamond Facial, £150 for 90mins (details available at www.spacenk.co.uk). Recommended for those with mature skin, the facial acts as an anti-aging, regenerative treatment. Botanical and marine extracts are used, along with specialist application techniques including lymphatic drainage to leave skin hydrated and with a renewed radiance.

SILK
This prized fabric has been revered for centuries in the Far East, with its use once limited by law solely to the rich and nobility.
In the 1960s, silk pillowcases were prescribed to keep heavily styled hair in place. In recent years, the benefits of sleeping on a silk pillowcase have been revisited, with claims that it reduces hair frizziness, prevents expensive night creams rubbing off, and reduces wrinkle-causing friction to the face. Alexandra Burke and Nigella Lawson are both reportedly fans of silk pillowcases. Not convinced by the hype? The results speak for themselves! Try SilkPerfect, £29.99 (www.silkperfect.com) for pillowcases made from 100% pure silk in a discreet ivory shade to suit any bedroom decor.
Silk is also included in many beauty products, as it has water-binding properties and promotes soft skin. Deborah Mitchell, celebrity facialist and founder of Heaven Skincare, explains, “Silk is a protein based ingredient which stimulates natural collagen, inducing a firming effect on the skin.” The brand’s Silk Skin Tinted Moisturiser, £28.95 (www.heavenskincare.com) is a summer must-have for creating a flawless base; Dannii Minogue swears by it.
The protein base of silk is beneficial to hair and nail health. Look out for The Nail Doctor Wrap it Up! Liquid Bandage for Nail Emergencies, £5.59 (www.onestopbeauty.co.uk), which is enriched with silk protein to strengthen weak, fragile nails when used as a base or top coat. Alternatively, if your lashes have taken abuse with the trend for exaggerated length, switch to a nourishing mascara containing silk extract such as Peter Thomas Roth Lashes to Die For, £15 (www.beautyexpert.co.uk), which gives a natural looking definition and doesn’t smudge.

CAVIAR
Remember grandmother’s tales of egg being a fantastic hair treatment? That is because eggs are a source of life and include highly nourishing nutrients. Caviar takes this concept to the next level for a new world of luxury.
Update grandmother’s kitchen remedy using Alterna Caviar Seasilk Hair Treatment Masque, £33.60 (www.beautyexpert.co.uk). Try it once and it will quickly become an integral part of your haircare regime. The lightweight mask leaves hair unbelievably soft yet easy to control, without leaving it lank or inhibiting volume.
Prefer to leave your tresses in the hands of the professionals? Hari’s Salon’s treatment menu includes a Caviar Hair Mask, £100 for 1hr 30minutes. Made using the finest quality Iranian caviar, the high potency fish oils nourish and treat dry, damaged hair to leave locks looking rejuvenated. The treatment must be booked five days in advance so that the mask can be specially prepared to order. Don’t worry - these hair treatments are the ultimate word in luxury so there’s not a trace of fishy scent!
Needless to say, the nourishing benefits also extend to skincare. La Prairie is renowned for the use of caviar in their signature line. The “hero” product in the collection, Skin Caviar Luxe Cream, £436 (www.houseoffraser.co.uk), is a rich cream that includes Caviar Firming Complex, a blend of five key components including caviar extract to nourish and energise, seaweed protein to stimulate collagen production, and polyglucuronic acid and algae extract to firm. Gentle exfoliants within the cream mean that skin appears more radiant from the first application. Nadia Miller, Director of Brand Development International, explains the justification behind the hefty price tag, “Previously, it was thought that a luxury cream was just for pampering and could not compete with the fast-paced, high-tech skincare products... La Prairie disproves this assumption. Its (Skin Caviar Luxe Cream) unique firming, nourishing, moisturising, retexturising, lifting, stimulating and protective actions make it the ultimate in luxury... It combines pleasure with high performance.”

ROSE OTTO
Not a variety of rose, but a form of extraction using steam distillation to obtain the precious oil from the petals. Steam distillation yields less oil than the solvent method used in the production of the more common rose absolute and is therefore, priced accordingly. Rose otto is olive green in colour, with a scent of sweet roses. Rose oil is sometimes described as rose “otto” or “attar”, which comes from the Arabic word “utur”, meaning perfume.
Natural range, Ren are known for including the very best ingredients that mother nature has to offer. They have dedicated their award-winning Moroccan Rose Otto range to this exclusive ingredient, which is effective on all skin types, including sensitive. Try incorporating the fragrant Moroccan Rose Otto Body Wash, £16 (www.renskincare.co.uk) into your daily routine to ramp up the indulgence levels of your shower. Rumoured fans include Kate Beckinsale and Sienna Miller.
Another natural brand, Lush use approximately 20 kilos of rose otto – mainly sourced in Turkey – every year at a cost of over £3,000 per kilo, praising it for its versatility. It is included in their new Turkish Delight Body Polish, £15 (www.lush.co.uk), which gently buffs up sallow winter skin and transports you to the exotic East with its heady, sweet scent.
Meanwhile, if the scent reminds you off luxurious spas, look no further than ESPA who have created Replenishing Face Treatment Oil, £50 (www.espaonline.com). Ideal for dry or mature skin types, this rich and hydrating oil contains a blend of pure neroli, rose otto, patchouli and clary sage essential oils to soothe and revitalise.

TRUFFLES
These prized mushrooms have a rich history in the culinary industry – and now they are being included in beauty products too. A single white truffle once fetched $330,000 at auction, so they are very much in demand…
British spa brand, Elemis, have included white truffles in their Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing Gel Mask, £45 (www.timetospa.co.uk). The fungi were chosen as they promote skin health by supporting the natural micro-flora, which is present, without impacting on pH levels. This creates the perfect environment for the enzymes within the mask to work to their optimum, giving skin an instant boost.
Truffle Moisturising Shampoo, £50, and White Truffle Nourishing Hair Conditioning Creme £65, both at www.spacenk.co.uk fetch prices at the high end of the scale. Distinguished Hollywood hairstylist, Philip B explains that the White Truffle Oil contained within his products contains vitamin E, which is very moisturising to the hair. “The scent of the truffle makes the other elements of the products marry together to move the mind in the most sensual way. Truffle is an aphrodisiac to eat, and, in turn, to the olfactory.“ The distinctive, musty aroma blends with floral lavender, hops, nettle and chamomile, reacting to create a powerful aromatherapy experience. So, who exactly is willing to fork out the price of a high street dress on a shampoo or conditioner, I hear you ask? The team at Philip B. describe their core customer as one who “values quality and effectiveness above all else. She or he may be of any age. Many women use Philip B. products because their hair is over-processed or has chemical damage. Many mature women turn to Philip B. to help restore the youthful looks of their hair...Women invest in top quality face creams but many of us forget that our hair can also age us...” Why not join these discerning ranks and judge for yourself?

Breaking News: ELEMIS INTRODUCE FIRST FRAGRANCE (30.04.10)
Luxury British spa brand Elemis are celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2010 with a host of new launches. The most exciting arrives this month with the introduction of the brand’s first signature fragrance. The scent, known simply as “Elemis Eau de Parfum”, is an unexpected, modern, fresh blend, created in the home of perfume, Grasse, France.
Elemis is renowned for its tempting aromas – and the perfume is intended to be used as a finishing touch, completing the Elemis beauty ritual. Fragrance notes gathered from around the globe and chosen for their aromatherapeutic benefits have been carefully blended to create the scent. Noella Gabriel, Elemis Director of Product & Treatment Development explains, ““For two decades, Elemis has collected and utilised active aromas that allow your spirits to soar or help you to feel more grounded... Elemis has pioneered the power of “the breath” and what you breathe as a form of therapy in itself. Having shared such a sophisticated level of understanding, the time is right to offer a beautiful, multi-faceted fragrance that creates an individual harmony on every skin.”
Top notes of zesty Elemi and Sweet Grasses refresh when the perfume is initially spritzed on, the fragrance then mellows to reveal Marine Accord and Vetiver before settling into the warm, deep scents of Patchouli, Oak Moss and Gaiacwood.
With turquoise packaging designed to reflect the fresh, oceanic elements of the fragrance and a bottle with clean lines, Elemis Eau de Parfum looks as chic on your dressing table as it is wearable and elegant.

Editor’s Letter (30.04.10)
Would you spend £436 on a pot of face cream containing extracts of caviar? (See this week’s feature on Luxe Beauty by clicking here). It’s probably not the right thing to say as a Beauty Editor, but the money would have to be prised from my hands by industrial machinery. I just couldn’t justify it. In my opinion, the cash would be far better spent on a weekend away, a pair of designer heels (which would last far longer than a pot of face cream), or a week of restaurant dinners. Of course, it wouldn’t just be one pot – as soon as the results start to show (and you’d hope that it’d be pretty damn quick at that price), you’d be convinced to part with your cash a second time, a third, and ongoing… If I won the lottery and had the cash to hand, perhaps I would reconsider – but I still don’t think I could slather it onto my face with quite the same gusto that I do with my £25 pot from Clinique. Still, I might just be tempted to sneak over to the tester pot when I’m next browsing in Duty Free and scoop some out of the pot – just to see what the fuss is about…

NUXE. If we keep searching, we will all eventually find the skincare brand that perfectly suits our skin type. Mine is NUXE - a French brand that fuses nature with luxurious ingredients. I have never failed to be impressed with one of their products – and so I was thrilled to be sent the brand’s latest launch: Honey Lip Balm (£9). I have the kind of lips that will never be plump, smooth or hydrated – they are sensitive, flaky, and prone to cracking. This product, however, has totally transformed them. The soft, soothing balm contains Acacia Honey and Shea Butter to intensely repair lips. It instantly smoothes lip surface, so is also ideal for wearing under lipstick. www.lookfantastic.com

Palmers. I have exceedingly pale skin and am eternally on the hunt for the perfect brand of fake tan. I hit gold with Elemental Herbology last year and have just done it again with Palmers Cocoa Butter Natural Bronze Gradual Tan (£4.99). The colour is so natural and so perfectly streak-free, that I’m prepared to ignore the strong biscuity scent as it develops (a shame, as it starts off with the tempting scent of chocolate). One word of warning to the palest amongst us – two applications is a little too much, so wait until it fades before reapplying. Those with medium to dark skin tones can afford to apply each day for a beautiful tan that builds in strength each day. Superdrug Nationwide

Nougat. Keeping germs at bay has never been the most glamorous of chores – but Nougat Body to Home are set to change all that… The brand’s Hand Sanitisers (£8 each) are scented with Tuberose & Jasmine or Fig & Pink Cedar, which makes a welcome change from the antiseptic notes of most hand gels. The product is non-sticky and fast absorbing – and contain Aloe Vera to soothe and hydrate the skin. The bottles are generous-sized, so will last months, but are still compact enough to fit into any handbag. www.nougatbodytohome.co.uk

Topshop. As a dog owner, I might be slightly biased – but it was love at first sight with this pink ‘PUGS NOT DRUGS’ T-Shirt by Sweet N Sour at Topshop. I’m constantly having to rush home from glamorous press events to feed the dog (not a pug, but I think she looks like a bigger version), so I will be wearing it with pride throughout the summer months. The cropped 80’s style is bang on trend this season – although I will be wearing it over a dress, as nobody deserves to see my midriff as I’m strutting the streets of London. www.topshop.com

Batiste. Batiste has just launched Silver and Gold Shimmer versions of their iconic dry shampoo (£2.99 each) – perfect for sprucing up locks before a night on the tiles or for refreshing tresses at a music festival. I can’t imagine it catching on for daywear (I am having nightmares about picking up the wrong can before an important business meeting) and wouldn’t recommend wearing black before you spritz – but knowing Batiste, it’ll be another big hit and bottles will soon be flying off the shelves. Superdrug Nationwide.

Tried & Tested: BLEMISH SOLUTIONS (30.04.10)

Give your complexion a spring clean, with our selection of anti-blemish skincare and cosmetics.

DIORSKIN NUDE SKIN PERFECTING HYDRATING CONCEALER SPF 10, £19 (www.dior.com)
What they say: The soft texture instantly melts into the skin for the most perfect and natural results possible. The concealer contains nearly 35% Active Mineralized Water, minuscule water droplets that capture and reflect light to ensure blemishes don’t dry out.
The Results: I find it really hard to find good concealers, as they usually dry out spots, leaving them looking flaky and more obvious than if I hadn’t bothered to cover them. Dior’s hydrating concealer has been a revelation! I used the lightweight liquid to cover blemishes and was thrilled at the even, natural-looking coverage. It blended well and stayed put all day. I retouched once before a night out and was pleasantly surprised to find my blemish wasn’t looking obvious or dried out at all. This is such a fantastic product and I’m sure how I ever survived without it!
Best for: Stopping spots from drying out

CLINIQUE NEW ANTI-BLEMISH SOLUTIONS LIQUID MAKEUP, £20 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: This new foundation offers a clinically-proven four pronged approach to conceal, treat and prevent blemishes. It contains Salicylic Acid to rid your skin of dead cells, helps to control the oil balance of your skin, contains Hydroxydecanoic acid to control the spread of spots and caffeine to minimise irritation.
The Results: I’m a big fan of Clinique and I’m thrilled that they’ve finally brought out a new blemish-treating foundation. I usually hate applying foundation, as I feel it’s clogging my pores and ultimately leading to more spots - but this is the best of both worlds. The packaging is sleek and fits with the rest of the Clinique collection and the colour suits my skin tone perfectly. The foundation gives fantastic coverage - even over existing blemishes - and applying it makes me feel confident that my spots are being zapped throughout the day.
Best for: Even coverage

CLEARASIL ULTRA OVERNIGHT ALL-OVER FACE LOTION, £5.28 (www.boots.com)
What they say: This can be used as both a preventative product and a treatment for spots. In addition to the active ingredients that fight spots, the all-over-face lotion contains softening ingredients that prepare skin for overnight treatment, without leaving the skin greasy.
The Results: I was happy to ditch my expensive night creams for this lotion in the hope it would improve my blemishes. It smelt slightly menthol, but rubbed in very easily and didn’t leave my skin oily or greasy. It didn’t tingle at all, which made me worry that it wasn’t working. My skin felt supple and smooth, but to be totally honest, I don’t think it made that much difference to my blemishes. I tried it every night for a fortnight, but maybe it just takes a little longer to work.
Best for: Overnight Use.

NEUTROGENA SPOT STRESS CONTROL 3-IN-1 DAILY CLENSING LOTION, £4.49 (www.boots.com)
What they say: Used daily, this lotion cleanses, reduces shine and helps prevents spots in one easy step. MicroClear technology unclogs pores to penetrate deep down, dissolving oil and dirt to help clear spots. Enriched with green tea and cucumber extracts, this formula is specially developed for daily use.
The Results: This is everything you could want in a daily face wash. The packaging is bright and bold, so looks great on the bathroom shelf. The lotion itself has small green beads in it, which effectively scrubbed the makeup and dead cells off my face – it was incredibly satisfying! I often suffer from outbreaks of spots, but this beautifully scented face wash seems to have done the trick because my skin has been much clearer for weeks. Plus it’s under a fiver, which is great value for money.
Best For: Value for money

DARPHIN BLEMISH CLEARING GEL, £19 (www.origins.co.uk).
What they say: This lightweight gel veils the skin with an invisibly film to help target the treatment. It can be applied directly to the imperfection as often as necessary, throughout the day. Darphin Blemish Clearing Gel has a triple action on skin imperfections; to reduce oil, eliminate dead cells and purify the skin.
The Results: I’m not a big believer in spot creams, as they never seem to work – but this one has definitely changed my mind! I love Darphin and the natural ingredients they use in their products, so was relived when I was handed the tube. This gel is clear, lightweight and smells yummy – not like the usual medicinal smells that put my boyfriend off kissing me goodnight! The gel stings slightly when you apply it, but dries super quickly and doesn’t leave any residue. I’ve renamed this ‘miracle gel’ because although my spots were still there the next morning they were reduced in size and redness. Everybody needs this product in their overnight bag!
Best for: Instant Results

DERMALOGICA READY, SET, SCRUB!, £14.30 (0800 917 7147)
What they say: A masque and scrub duo that delivers smoother, clearer and fresher skin, whilst fighting breakouts and refining pores. Purifying clays of bentonite and kaolin pull excess oil from the skin, deep cleaning and helping to control shine. Silica helps polish the skin to a smooth, bright finish whilst scrubbing away clogging dead skin cells and menthol soothes and calms aggravation.
The Results: I love applying face masks to help clear my skin and soothe angry spots – and use one at least once a week. This product is gentle enough to be used as a daily scrub - or you can leave it on your face for up to five minutes so that it solidifies into a mask. To avoid drying my skin out, I only used this once a week and I did so for a whole month. I used it alongside a Dermalogica moisturiser and noticed that my skin looked clearer and my pores appeared much smaller. A job well done!
Best for: Weekly use

Tried & Tested: POWDER HIGHLIGHTERS (23.04.10)
Give your complexion a beautiful, healthy glow this spring and summer, with a powder highlighter. We’ve tested six palettes…

BARE MINERALS WELL RESTED HIGHLIGHTER, £18 (www.bareescentuals.co.uk)
What they say: Well Rested is a fabulous highlighter that creates an iridescent radiance to the skin.
The Results: I’m a big fan of the Bare Minerals range and was excited to test this product. I applied it on my brow line and around my eyes to enhance and highlight the areas. It smoothed easily onto my skin and blended effortlessly, leaving a gorgeous, natural-looking sheen that made my skin appear to glow. It does exactly what it says on the tin, making you instantly appear rested, fresh and revitalised. It comes in a generous sized pot and a tiny amount goes a long way, so it is a great investment. The packaging has a shaker top, which can be sealed so you don’t have to worry about powder spillages in your handbag. This is the perfect beauty treat for spring.
Best For: Natural, glowing skin

CLINIQUE FRESH BLOOM ALLOVER COLOUR, £23.50 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: Fresh Bloom Allover Colour offers wonderful versatility, sheer coverage and a beautiful finish for the entire face—all in one easy-to-use palette!
The Results: This is a beautiful product. The pretty flower embossed on the powder makes it a luxury and very special beauty treat. It gave my cheeks a pink, rosy glow, which made my complexion shimmer. I applied it all over my face and décolletage to see how it looked, but I found it made my skin look a bit too pink so in future I think I’ll just use it just across my cheeks. It sweeps on to the skin easily and gives a lovely sheen, which lasts all day. The colour is natural, so the palette is ideal for everyday wear. I’m at the age where I can’t really get away with wearing bright fuchsias or peach highlighters, so this is much more suitable.
Best For: A natural blush

NARS HIGHLIGHTING BLUSH POWDER IN ALBATROSS £19.50 (www.narscosmetics.co.uk)
What they say: This truly versatile highlighting product may be worn on its own or layered over other color products for added highlight and dimension. The soft shimmering color will add instant radiance to any complexion, and may be used on the face and body.
The Results: I love dramatic makeup and this is the perfect product for creating a unique look. I applied it generously to my cheeks and brows and the soft powder gave a golden, pearl finish. I even brushed some across my body, which looked great but I found it rubbed off on my clothes so be careful! The powder texture was really light on my skin and didn’t feel greasy at all. I have quite oily skin so I’m very conscientious about what products I use and this perfectly suits my skin type. This will be great for wearing on nights out and it comes with a big mirror compact so is great for popping in your handbag.
Best for: Evenings out

BENEFIT 10, £23.50 (www.lookfantastic.com)
What they say: The satiny pink and bronze powders give you instant cheekbones and tantalises your complexion and décolleté, with one simple sweep, making you a perfect ten.
The Results: I love Benefit products and have a huge collection on my dressing table as everything comes in such pretty packaging. This is no exception – it comes in a beautiful box with a compact brush and it would be great for giving to a friend as a gift. The pink and bronze shades blended very easily and gave my skin a lovely holiday glow. I used the powder all over my face and neck and the little box and brush were the perfect-size to throw into my handbag for top-ups throughout the day. It’s not the cheapest product but it really is a lovely treat to have perfect for the summer season.
Best for: A holiday glow

5. MAC IRIDESCENT POWDER, £17 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk)
What they say: This iridescent powder is a finely-milled mixture of mica and pigments which gives the skin a beautiful sheen. It can be used on its own or mixed into other products like foundations or moisturisers to enhance their iridescent qualities.
The Results: This is the perfect tool for creating a fun party look. It gives a really glittery effect, which looks great on the cheekbones. I even brushed some on my legs and arms to give them a sparkle for my night out. It’s not ideal for the day-time as there’s nothing natural about this product - but it’s great for adding glamour to nights out. The highlighter goes on quite heavily, so you only need to apply a tiny amount to get a stunning effect. I found that it applied easily with a blusher brush as I could tap off the excess product and gradually build my look. When applied with my finger it was quite difficult to control the product.
Best for: Parties

M&S AUTOGRAPH MINERAL POWDER HIGHLIGHTER, £12 (www.marksandspencer.com)
What they say: A 100% pure mineral, sparkling loose highlighting powder that can be used wherever you want to add luminosity and glow. Formulated with a hint of gold, to create a delicate veil of colour on your face, décolletage and shoulders.
The Results: I have sensitive skin, so I usually stay away from products that contain shimmer as I’m worried it will irritate my skin. However, this highlighter is hypoallergenic, so I thought I would give it a go - and I was able to wear it for a whole evening without experiencing any reaction at all. It gave a natural sheen with a golden glow. I did need to use a generous amount of the powder to get a prominent effect, but as it’s quite reasonably priced, I didn’t feel guilty using a lot of the product. I prefer mineral-based products as I find them gentle on my skin and less oily so this is definitely a product I will use again.
Best for: Great value

For those seeking something a bit different, the spa offers Dead Sea Flotation – said to be as relaxing as a night’s sleep – and a stress-relieving, low-UV Aquasun Experience. The treatment rooms are spacious and ultra-comfortable – with therapists making use of a selection of luxurious, mineral spa products. Healthy lunch options are available in the modern reception area, making Kalmora Spa the ideal choice for a full-day retreat.
Ambience: You’ll be hard pushed finding a spa that is more peaceful than Kalmora Spa. Lying on the treatment beds, you will hear nothing but the sound of birdsong – there’s no need for pre-recorded soundtracks here! Whilst the views aren’t visible from the spa itself, the knowledge that you are based in the countryside, miles away from the big smoke, is incredibly relaxing. Staff are friendly, down to earth and eager to help.
Treatments Tested: Spa Find Essential Elements Prescriptive Facial, from £29 for 60 minutes. This bespoke, prescriptive facial began with a thorough skin assessment, before the therapist picked out products that would suit my skin type. After cleansing, toning, exfoliating, and massaging my skin, she applied a cooling gel mask, which began to set almost instantly. After leaving me to relax, the mask was removed in one quick movement, before moisturiser and eye cream was applied to hydrate my skin. A full week later and my complexion is still looking fresh, even-toned, and far younger. I am very impressed!
Spa Find Infinite Indulgence Black Mud Envelopment, from £46 for 75 minutes. This pampering treatment started with a full body exfoliation to slough away dead skin cells and rough patches, before a thick, sticky application of Dead Sea Mud was applied to my whole body. I was then wrapped in a plastic sheet and blanket, and then treated to a heavenly scalp massage. I was left to relax for a few minutes, to allow the mud to work its magic, before being unwrapped and pointed in the direction of the shower, where I spent at least 15 minutes trying to wash the gloopy mud off my skin! Eventually clean, I emerged from the bathroom and hopped back onto the bed, where the treatment concluded with an application of rich body cream. My skin has never felt softer!

Editor’s Letter (23.04.10)
With election fever sweeping the country, now is the time to show the world where your allegiance lies – and what better way to do it, than by painting your pout, lacquering your nails, or dusting your lids in the colour of your chosen party? Gunning for Labour? Swathe your pout in the brightest, pillar-box red. I love MAC Cosmetics Lady Danger Lipstick, which is creamy, long lasting, and as bright as red will ever get. Conservatives get your vote? Go retro – without looking too Maggie Thatcher – by painting lashes in an 80’s-style blue mascara, such as Barry M Mascara in Sky Blue, and then dusting lids in a blue shadow, such as Bobbi Brown’s Metallic Eye Shadow in Iced Blue. Liberal Democrats your party of choice? The prettiest way to wear yellow is to pick a pastel hue and wear it on your nails – it looks especially good worn with a tan, so the rest of the bottle will come in handy during the summer. I love Illamasqua’s Pastel Polish in ‘Blow’ – an almost-edible shade lemon sorbet. Getting creative with our cosmetics may not win the parties extra votes, but it’ll certainly add a bit of glamour to the world of politics, which lets face it, can sometimes be a little grey and dreary. May the best team win…

Nails Inc. Nobody needs a bottle of nail varnish with a diamante-encrusted lid – but that doesn’t stop me thinking that Nails Inc’s fabulous new collection of Crystal Polishes (£15 each) are really quite fabulous. It isn’t just the bling-tastic bottles that get my vote, but the selection of sophisticated, eye-catching colours that the brand has chosen to be included in the collection. My favourite is Duchess Street – a deep, pretty purple, with just a touch of shimmer, which is bang on trend for Spring/Summer 2010. The colour is bright, glossy and impressively long-lasting. www.nailsinc.com

Bobbi Brown. There are few things more indulgent than perfumed sunscreen, so when I first got my mitts on a bottle of Bobbi Brown Beach Sunscreen Body Spray SPF15 (£17.50), I instantly wished I had been sent a whole crate. The lightweight, non-greasy spray is scented with Beach, the brand’s signature scent for summer, which contains uplifting notes of sand jasmine, sea spray and mandarin. The formula is water-resistant and contains skin-friendly Vitamin E, along with extracts of Grapeseed, Olive and Castor Oils. It feels silky on the skin and smells utterly divine. www.bobbibrown.co.uk

Monsoon. Monsoon has just launched its second fragrance, Elation (from £15) and it is spot on for summer. The blend of notes includes white tea, freesia, crisp rose and apple blossom – and the result is fresh, modern, and very feminine. I’ll be saving this scent for the warmest summer days – and the affordability means that I can spritz away to my hearts content (something I always worry about doing with the premium brands). The fragrance was developed in partnership with British heritage brand Bronnley and is available at Monsoon stores, Superdrug and Boots Nationwide.

Elemental Herbology. It’s the time of year again when I start to think about twice-weekly applications of fake tan – so I will be ordering another tube of my favourite product: Elemental Herbology Sun Kiss (£22.50). The thick, luxurious moisturiser has the subtle scent of lavender and richly hydrates skin – yet within hours, an eco-certified approved self-tanning agent (derived from sugar-beet) gives skin a beautifully natural glow. There isn’t a hint of a streak – and is it just as effective on the palest skin (like mine) to darker skin tones that are looking for a little boost. www.spacenk.co.uk

Dr Lipp. How would you feel about applying nipple balm to your lips? That’s the idea behind Dr Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips (£11). It is said to be an industry secret as one of the best lip moisturisers around. It makes sense, as the product is medical-grade, designed originally to relieve dry, painful nipples associated with breastfeeding. It is apparently so good that it hydrates dry, rough pouts by up to 40 per cent in just an hour. I’m sold! www.cultbeauty.co.uk

Blog: MAKEUP ARTIST NADIRA V PERSAUD PICKS HER FAVOURITE PRODUCTS FOR ACHIEVING PERFECT, SUMMER SKIN (23.04.10)
The bronzing effect is upon all of us, what with the hint of sunshine recently, teasing us into thinking we could ditch the winter woollies, we now crave a sun-kissed glow on our rather dull complexions.
How do we pull off natural luminosity whilst incorporating an up to the minute summer look?
Start prepping skin into shape with NUDE Deep Cleansing Mask once or twice a week to revive congested skin back to clear radiance – then give skin an intensive brightening boost by using Darphin Clear White Brightening and Soothing Serum to keep skin even, smooth and vibrant.
Assume some good habits by wearing Bare Minerals Prime Time Oil Control Foundation Primer under makeup, to keep your base in place, refine pores and control shine on warmer days.
Omorovicza’s new addition, Sun Kiss, beams warmth onto skin when used all over or when applied to forehead, cheekbones, bridge of the nose and chin. If a pressed powder is more your thing, then buff on Chanel Moisturising Bronzing Powder for a warm peachy reflection, using ELF Kabuki Brush for more precision. To achieve a sultry flush to apples of cheeks, with a desirable sculpted result, ELF Studio Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder creates definition and glow in one handy pro-like compact.
To brighten and highlight, try applying Givenchy Mister Bright onto brow bones, cheeks and eyelids including inner corners; brush on then press on with fingertips to set. Choose from 3 shades to suit your skin tone to reveal an engaging bronzed effect. Alternatively, dust on Lily Lolo Stardust Powder to get a soft sheen on those areas with this neutral shade.
This look is nothing if you have dark circles so choose a lightweight concealer. A foolproof one is Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener, available in 8 shades, to erase unwanted shadows and enhance a tanned look even more.
The ‘oh so hot’ summer essential is Clinique Brandied Bronze Colour Surge eye shadow palette with some hot-picked shades from beachy bronze, soft plum and pink to peacock green. For hazy days wash the pink shade over eyelids for instant oomph and for late Summer evenings think sultry by blending the green along the lower lashline. For an edgy effect that will not budge, apply Prestige Waterproof Eyeliner in Brown onto the inside cuticle of eyes then use a smudge free lengthening mascara on upper lashes. Bare Minerals Flawless Definition does just that, with the added benefit of being infused with natural extracts. Brows needn’t be too defined but keep unruly hairs at bay by stroking ELF Studio Eyebrow Treat & Tame through hairs to condition and well groomed.
It’s never easy to wear lip-gloss in all climate conditions but consider Dior Addict Crystal Jelly Gloss for a comfortable and shiny, pungent pink pout that suits all. This is one hot ‘weather beater’.
Even if we don’t have that lengthy heat-wave we are always promised, you will appear to be blessed with a golden, smouldering afterglow.

FEATURE: CALL THE DOCTOR (23.04.10)
There's a wealth of pharmaceutical-style products on the market. The formulations are scientific and the packaging looks great on the bathroom shelf - but who's got the right prescription for you?

FACE
Why bother with surgery or painful needles when you can get a prescription for your complexion from skincare specialists? The results are like a face-lift in a jar, stemming from years of scientific research by medical professionals. So put a hold on ageing and let your skin release its true potential with these hardworking facial products.
The RéVive range was founded by Dr Gregory Bays Brown, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon. It contains a bioengineered form of human EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor) which encourages ageing skin cells to revert to a youthful renewal pattern – and significantly improves overall skin quality. Choose the Moisturising Renewal Cream, £100 (www.spacenk.co.uk), which promises a dramatic improvement in skin tone in just two weeks.
Or try Dr Bragi’s Age Management Marine Enzyme Formulation, £117.45 (www.beautybay.com) - a brand new skincare treatment that visibly transforms and improves the skin. Developed by Dr Jon Bragi, a Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Iceland, the formulation boasts a unique patented marine enzyme. An oil-free but intensive moisturiser, it stimulates circulation and cell renewal and even helps to fade wrinkles.
Formulated by plastic surgeon Dr Barry J. Cohen, the pH Advantage brand is based around glycolics – and delivers a high concentration of active anti-ageing ingredients, but with a lower price tag than some similar brands. A bestseller is the High Potency Vitamin C Serum, £70 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk) that prevents and heals skin cell damage and stimulates collagen production for firmer, more resilient skin.

MAKEUP
Your GP wouldn’t take kindly to being asked for makeup tips. But don’t despair - there are doctors on call to give you a prescription for looking fabulous.
Prime your complexion with the hot new product from Dr Nicholas Perricone MD. Perfect for a light base now the weather is getting warmer, his No Foundation Foundation, £41 (www.perriconemd.co.uk) is already viewed as a cult product by the beauty industry. Not only does it have an SPF30, but it’s also a multi-purpose base that provides natural translucent coverage, corrects skin undertones, instantly smoothes fine lines and boosts skin's natural moisture throughout the day. You’ll never look back.
Dr. Hauschka‘s makeup isn’t as well known as his skincare, but it’s getting great reviews from the beauty press. It aims to keep skin nourished and protected, and its rich colours are derived from natural mineral pigments and petal waxes that blend effortlessly. Emphasise eyes with Pearl Anthracite Volume Mascara, £18.37 (www.drhauschka.co.uk) – a dark stone-coloured mascara that gives lashes a dramatic, generous curve without clumping.
Don’t forget a prescription for your lips. Stuart Kaplan MD is a top dermatologist in Beverly Hills and has created a colour lip treatment with a difference. LIP 20 by KaplanMD, £22.50 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk) is designed to moisturise, contour and protect pouts with a built-in SPF20. Enriched with anti-ageing marine collagen, peptides and antioxidants, this tinted balm is available in five shades and is designed to fill out lines and plump – but unlike most plumper’s, it won’t irritate and sting.

HAIR
Stressed-out, damaged hair? Overdone it with blow-drying or straighteners? Limp and lifeless locks? Don’t panic – call in the experts and give some intensive care to your crowning glory.
It doesn’t just smell divine, but Dr Haushcka’s Jojoba and Marshmallow Conditioner, £16.33 (www.drhauschka.co.uk) will also soften and detangle your hair with its blend of herbal oils and extracts. Like all the Doctor’s haircare products, it’s formulated with eco-friendly, natural ingredients.
No doctors here, but Senscience Liquid Luxury brings scientific research to your bathroom. It’s a prestige hair care collection specially formulated by Shiseido Laboratories, and uses Vitalkck-6 to nourish, strengthen and moisturise hair from within. Try the Senscience Inner Restore Intensif Deep Repairing Masque, £9.95 (www.beautybay.com), which uses polymeric conditioners and humectants to balance hair’s moisture level.
Or why not arrange a house call from The Hair Doctor, £14.45 (www.lush.co.uk)? It’s a cleansing, reviving moisturiser to heal hair and scalps that are feeling out of sorts. Containing Fuller's Earth (a clay which de-greases your hair and scalp) as well as stimulating peppermint and rosemary, The Hair Doctor has to be kept in the fridge due to the freshness of its ingredients.

HANDS & FEET
After a long winter wrapped up in tights and gloves, your feet and hands might need a course of therapy before they’re ready for the summer. What’s the dose? These miracle cures from the skincare doctors. You’ll have a clean bill of health in no time...
Dr Nick Lowe is an internationally renowned Consultant Dermatologist with over 30 years’ experience. All the more reason to trust his Double Duty SPF15 Hand Cream, £12.67 (www.drnicklowe.com), a superb multi-tasking hand cream boosted with protective SPF15, an advanced dual-action Vitamin A, potent moisturisers and a Mulberry-derived skin lightener to help preserve the youthfulness of hands, nails and cuticles.
Let’s not neglect our nails. Keep Dr Haushcka’s Neem Nail Oil, £23.48 (www.drhauschka.co.uk) on hand to soften and protect cuticles and aid the formation of strong nail tissue. A couple of drops of oil are massaged into the cuticle twice a day – the massage itself encourages nail growth. It’s a must-have for healthy talons.
Back to the laboratory for a little research – and we’ve discovered Robelyn Labs, a company that specialises in safe and effective maternity skincare products that can be used by everyone. Their Refreshing Foot Therapy Gel, £10 (www.beautylusthaves.com) is a soothing gel that provides fast relief for sore and tired feet using special natural oils and chlorophyll to combat foot odours. Use in the morning to energise feet, it’s easily absorbed with no greasy feel or stickiness.

BODY
Get your body bikini-ready for the summer by increasing your dose of skin TLC. The beauty doctors don’t just know how to combat ageing – they know a thing or two about improving the quality of skin all over your body too.
Dr Bragi’s The Face & Body Salvation, £78.30 (www.beautybay.com) can be used on the face or body and it makes for an indispensable body moisturiser, effective massage lotion, or an emergency facial spritz to use when travelling or post shaving. Harnessing the unique properties of marine enzymes to instantly nourish, calm and rebalance skin, one simple spritz keeps the skin hydrated and supple all day. And with prolonged use, marine enzymes help diminish effects of ageing such as loss of radiance and decrease in tone.
Robelyn Labs Elastin 3 Advanced Stretch Mark Therapy, £55 (www.beautylusthaves.com) is a fast-absorbing product designed to repair, lighten and reduce the appearance of existing stretch marks, while at the same time preventing future marks from appearing. Elastin 3 is the only advanced stretch mark therapy to contain the AH3 Amino Peptide (Argireline), and on average, improvements can be seen in as little as a few days.
The Organic Soothing Gel from Dr Alkaitis, £36 (www.cultbeauty.co.uk) is a gentle, moisturising antibacterial treatment that leaves skin soft, supple and refreshed. It's good for sensitive skin and post waxing, electrolysis or any hair removal, and also works well for inflammatory conditions like sunburn, acne, eczema and rosacea. Just what the doctor ordered.

TROUBLE-SHOOTERS
If you’re having a beauty emergency, look no further than these hi-tech solutions. From breakouts to complexion boosting, there’s a veritable medicine cabinet out there to get your looks back to fighting fit in no time
Spots getting you down? DS Laboratories Trioxil PM, £25 (www.beautylusthaves.com) is a new gel for mild to moderate acne that’s soothing and calming on the skin. The science behind it is really impressive: it contains DS Laboratories nanonsomes, tiny microspheres (much smaller than skin cells) that penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin to release active ingredients over a 12-hour period. Perfect for immediate relief, the gel also helps solve the underlying causes of acne.
Or try Dr Sebagh Breakout Powder & Cream, £53 (www.beautybay.com). Dr Sebagh is a world famous skincare expert who has treated some of the most famous faces in the world. This two-part kit covers all aspects of a breakout while maintaining the balance of the surrounding skin.
Although not a doctor brand, Elemis is ‘led by science’ and has a miracle worker in its range that wouldn’t look out of place on the shelf of a hi-tech skincare clinic. Pro-Collagen Quartz Lift Mask, £45 (www.timetospa.co.uk) is a luxurious cream mask that combines the power of Quartz with Padina Pavonica and Argan Tree Oil to instantly uplift and hydrate the skin. Try leaving it on overnight for really exceptional results.

Editor’s Letter (16.04.10)
Our feature this week – Grooming Guru – is dedicated to the men in our lives. Since this website launched in 2008, I have noticed that more and more men are visiting the site. I’ve also noticed a change to the men in my life – my fiancé, my friends, and my family – who might not be interested in spa trips, cosmetics, or essential oils, but are certainly paying more attention to their skin. Sales figures confirm it, with the male grooming market in the UK now worth £920million a year. In fact, according to a recent survey by shaving brand Gillette, a quarter of men in this country now spend as much on their looks as their partners. It made me laugh recently when I caught my fiancé – who usually cares far more about football, rugby, and swigging beer than the way that he looks – discussing moisturiser with a friend. I had told him that he should be wearing sun protection every day, especially now that he lives in the Dubai, and he’s now adamant that nothing will touch his skin unless it contains SPF15. I shall be drawing his attention to our feature this week – and whilst I don’t expect him to invest in a makeup bag any time soon, I wouldn’t be surprised if I heard him passing more pearls of wisdom to his drinking buddies soon…

Lush. I have just been sent a set of Lush’s new Colour Supplements (£7.50) – and for me, it is so far the stand out launch of 2010. The ingenious pots of colour – there are four in total, to match every skin tone – are designed to be mixed with your regular moisturiser to create a bespoke tinted moisturiser. For a heavier coverage, the creamy soya and rice bran base can be applied directly to skin – or over blemishes for impressively effective coverage. I cannot recommend this product enough – it gives skin a healthy, natural dewy glow, whilst creating a flawless and even skin tone. Better still, it is lightweight and kind to your skin. Ditch your heavy foundation and treat yourself to a pot of this for summer – I guarantee that you won’t regret it. www.lush.co.uk

Diptyque. For me, there are few things more irresistible in the beauty world than Diptyque candles – the glass jars, beautiful scents, and clean-burning wicks are well worth the investment. Last week, I was sent the brand’s Limited Edition Spring Coffret (£58) and can highly recommend it to fans of the luxury French brand. It contains three mini jars – refreshing Green Mint; peppery Coriander; and zesty Lemon Verbena. I love the scents so much that I am hard pushed to pick my favourite – but burning all three candles together creates a stunning, fresh, evocative fragrance that will instantly add a smile to your face. www.spacenk.co.uk

Vivienne Westwood. Not strictly beauty, but beautiful nonetheless… Vivienne Westwood has reinvented the jelly shoe with the ‘Lady Dragon’ Anglomania collection (£102). They are colourful, fashionable and very fun – and for me, they bring back lots of memories. As I child, I owned pairs of jelly shoes in every colour of rainbow and remember strutting down Worthing beach in them, where my grandparents lived, feeling very chic. These high-heeled beauties won’t be going anywhere near the beach – they are strictly reserved for warm summer days in the city and nights on the dance floor – but one thing hasn’t changed: I still want to own a pair in every colour. www.spartoo.uk

SunShots. It might be easier to travel with just hand luggage, but the rules about carrying liquid on board makes packing tricky – especially when you want to take bottles of suncream… So my ears pricked up when I heard about a new launch called SunShots - handy pouches of SPF 25 sun cream, containing just 20ml of product, which is well within the guidelines for carrying into the cabin of the aircraft. The pouches can be purchased on their own (£1.50) or in packs of 10 (£12), which will easily protect your skin for a week in the sunshine. They are also ideal for throwing into your handbag for impromptu moments in the sunshine in the UK. www.sunshots.co.uk

Rituals. Foot scrubs aren’t generally the most glamorous of beauty products – but that all changes with Rituals’ luxurious Yogi Secret Sensational Detox Foot Scrub (£9.90). The cooling combination of Basil and Fresh Mint is ideal for upcoming warm, summer days (fingers crossed!), whilst the gentle exfoliants leave feet feeling baby soft and smooth. The tube isn’t huge, but a little goes a long way, so it will keep feet in tip-top condition throughout flip-flop season. I’m a big fan of the brand – and this is definitely another highlight… http://uk.ritualsstore.com

Treatment Review: LASER HAIR REMOVAL AT BEYOND MEDISPA, HARVEY NICHOLS (16.04.10)
What it promises: No-one wants back hair. Evolution has long since needed it. I don’t need it. I don’t want it. So, what can be done? Shaving is far too time consuming and regular (and the hair comes back thicker apparently). It’s also ridiculously awkward to do yourself. Waxing lasts slightly longer, but is also expensive, regular and despite our best efforts to hide it – actually a bit painful. Again, it’s also reliant on the kindness of your missus/flat-mate/stranger off the street or a hefty lay-out at the beauty salon. Hence – I find myself in the very capable hands of the Beyond Medispa team, on the 4th floor of Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge, looking for a better way. Laser Therapy involves a total of 5-6 treatment sessions, with a 6 week or so gap between each, and is quite simply the most effective way to remove unwanted hair.
What Happens: So, what happens on this magical sci-fi journey? After a quick chat, I’m led to a swish private room by ‘Amreet’ – the assistant manager - who will be taking care of me and my hirsute back region. First, she dry shaves my back to get rid of the offending hairs, then a special conductive oil/gel is applied. Next comes laser power! The laser covers the entire back top to bottom and no follicle is left un-blasted. To make sure all is covered, the laser slightly overlaps the last wave of application – leaving your back covered like a high-powered lawn mower on the Wembley turf. Just to clarify something for those of a wild imagination - the laser is not a James Bond style affair beaming down from a massive industrial metal cannon, capable of piercing a ships hull. You do have to wear special wraparound sunglasses as a precaution, but it’s more like a pulse of light from a handheld device. You’re safe! There’s a slight smell of burning hair during the process (which I find strangely reassuring), and a slight nip on the skin when the laser hits – but compared to waxing, it’s a piece of cake. Within 24 hours, the slight redness had vanished. It’s not the only thing that’s vanished either. I was now completely bald on my back and it was a strange and impressive feeling! Six weeks later, the hair had grown back, but a lot softer and a lot patchier. I returned for my second session – and another six weeks passed before my third, with even less hair growing back. The odd strands that did appear were significantly thinner. Near domination of my follicles.
The Results: Even after three sessions, my opinion on my back hair problem has completely turned around. I feel 100% confident taking off my top, without the need to try and cleverly position myself so that no-one can see my Chewbacca style reverse. It might seem a small thing, and not everyone finds back hair as depressing as I did, but it really does help with self-confidence knowing you do have an option to battle your genes! Medispa are friendly, fun, highly professional and most importantly successful! I can’t speak any higher of the experience or the results, and although it’s not cheap – compared to the on going hassle and costs of shaving or waxing – it really is an economical option. More than that, it’s the only way you get the results you need.
Price: A single laser treatment session for the back costs £250. A course of 6 (needed for permanent reduction) is £1250.
Location: Beyond MediSpa,
Fourth Floor,
Harvey Nichols,

Breaking News: IMEDEEN LAUNCHES SKINCARE SUPPLEMENT FOR MEN (16.04.10)
The male grooming industry is worth a whopping £920million – so it comes as no surprise that Imedeen has launched their first skincare supplement designed specifically for men. The giant leap for mankind comes in the form of man•age•ment – a supplement that works in the skin dermis (the deep layer that is untouched by traditional grooming products) to boost and improve skin performance from the inside-out.
Ideal for those who dislike the fuss of creams and lotions, man•age•ment is the ultimate user-friendly skincare for men. Two tablets daily will improve skin quality and structure in the dermal layer, reduce visible signs of ageing such as dryness and wrinkles, protect skin against harmful UV rays, increase moisture levels by 30%, and give skin an overall softer, smoother appearance.
Men’s skin gradually become thinner as cell regeneration slows down and collagen is lost in the dermis – an ageing process that starts in early adulthood. Skin becomes more vulnerable to abrasion and more sensitive to lifestyle and environmental factors. The daily shave destroys the skin’s barrier function leading to loss of natural lubrication and protection so skin becomes drier and more sensitive over time.
So, how does it work? Imedeen man•age•ment skincare tablets contain the exclusive Marine Complex reinforced with LycoPhence GS Forte, a mineral enriched anti-oxidant complex composed of lycopene, grapeseed extract, Vitamin C and zinc. Rich in proteins and polysaccharides found naturally in the skin’s supportive structure, the Marine Complex is scientifically shown to boost cellular turnover tenfold and slow down the skin’s ageing process. Benefits can be seen within 90 days – softer, smoother, healthier looking skin all over.
Imeeden man•age•ment costs £39.95 for one month’s supply. Avaiable in larger Boots stores or via www.imedeen.com/men or by calling 0845 5554499.

For more in-depth skin information, check out www.imedeen/men

Feature: GROOMING GURU (16.04.10)
This one’s for you boys… This week, we have dedicated our feature to the ever-popular world of male grooming – from super skincare, to irresistible scents, to retro haircare. Read it, then restock your bathroom cabinet.

SKINCARE
Calling all alpha males! If an extra five minutes in the bathroom could make you look a) more attractive b) younger c) healthier, wouldn’t you subscribe?
It doesn’t have to be complicated. If you’re time poor Liz Earle For Men Face and Body Wash, £10.75 for 200ml (http://uk.lizearle.com) should appeal. This dual-purpose gel contains naturally active ingredients like aloe vera and patchouli that will cleanse and moisturise the roughest of skin. And the light woody Bergamot scent will wake up the senses, whilst eliminating any stale smells from the night before.
To combat the onset of wrinkles, invest in a decent eye cream. If you don’t eat your five a day, get your vitamin fix from Dermalogica Multi-Vitamin Power Firm, £32.80 (0800 591818). It contains a powerful cocktail of Vitamin A, C and E that’ll help reduce fine lines and firm delicate skin around the eyes.
If you’re prone to the odd breakout seek solace in Kyoku for Men’s SKN-FC 677; pore reducing serum £35 (www.mankind.co.uk). It may sound like something you cooked up in chemistry class, but this Japanese potion of licorice root, ejitsu rose and marine algae works by closing up large pores resulting in fewer blackheads. And it works!
Every guy should remember to moisturise. There’s a plethora of hydrating creams on the market, but few that will look inconspictuous next to your toothbrush. Steamcream, £10 for 75g (www.steamcream.com) is just the ticket. The metallic round tin could easily be mistaken for hair wax, the cream can be used on your face, body and hands, and its Vegan properties will score you major green points.
Still unconvinced? Then check out the latest Leftbank import Apot.Care. Founded by 28-year-old Antoine Le Galloudec, the range has been designed for women, but Antoine swears by it and his skin is testament to his creation – he has the most radiant, wrinkle-free visage that even I’m a little envious of. Containing a Hyaluronic acid (pure source of hydration), Astaxanthin (powerful anti-oxidant) and NAC (amino acid that protects and heals), the Crème Irido-radiante, £110 for 50ml (www.spacenk.com) is the crème de la crème of moisturisers. A little pricy, but it’s well worth the splurge, especially if you share it with your girlfriend.

MAKEUP
This isn’t about making up with a loved one after an argument, men’s cosmetics is one of biggest growing sectors in the male grooming industry. And don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a new-fangled ploy to extract well earned cash from your wallet - makeup for men has been around since the ‘80s, so why not get with the programme?
If you’re guilty of swiping the YSL Touché Eclat from the Mrs when you’re feeling a little lacklustre, here’s a tip. Buy your own. Givenchy MISTER Light, £21 (Counters Nationwide) is the men’s equivalent of YSL’s hero product. And if this is all gobbledy-gook to you, this handy little pen-like contraption is your hangover saviour. Gently dab a few spots of the light correcting liquid under your eye, tap gently, blend and voila. Banished bags!
There are similar solutions when it comes to blemishes. A little concealer stick, like Clinique M Cover, £12.50 (www.clinique.co.uk) is perfect for disguising any angry red spots when you’ve got an impromptu date – and it’s small enough to fit into your pocket. But always ask the makeup artist behind the counter to colour match it to your skin tone.
If you’re a little pale around the chops invest in Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Pot, £36 (01932 233 887). This jet-black pot looks suspiciously like an ash tray – note to self, leave on shelf for prospective suitors to admire – but it houses the brush (which you use to apply) and the powder. Douse the brush with the powder, tap the end to discard any excess and brush over cheekbones, forehead, tip of the nose and chin for an all-over glow.

SCENT
Here’s a rough guide to the best on the scent scene but bear in mind different colognes smell entirely different on other people’s skin, so always try before you buy to discover your signature scent.
Newbies
Freshen up with DKNY’s latest fragance, Love from New York for men Eau de Toilette, £23 for 48ml (www.theperfumeshop.com). Its packaging features a montage of black and white, iconic New York images and the scent within doesn’t disappoint. Light and airy with a dominant citrus flavour, this is a great summery scent you’ll never bore of.
Formulated to reflect the British brand’s sporting heritage, Burberry Sport for Men Eau de Toilette (£38 for 50ml; Selfridges.co.uk) is bold and athletic. Featuring an invigorating combination of frozen ginger, grapefruit and wheatgerm, one spray and you’ll feel instantly energised.
Classic
Failsafe classics are often hard to come by but Boss by Hugo Boss, £29.50 for 50ml (Department Stores Nationwide) remains timeless. First launched in 1986, this sensual, confident and uber-masculine fragrance is a winner every time. With musky base notes and floral top notes its long-lasting formula makes it perfect for day and night.
Carolina Herrera 212 Sexy Men, £29.99 for 50ml (www.theperfumeshop.com) is a heavy fragrance with a proven formula that screams sex appeal. The woody base notes are softened by the essence of vanilla and amber; it’s the Lynx of the elite.
Boutique
Anyone who’s a sucker for a packaging will be drawn to Alford & Hoff Eau de Toilette, £85 (www.spacenk.com). The push-button mechanism at the base of the box reveals a cylindrical bottle with a raw wooden lid. The fragrance itself is a heady yet luxurious mix of amber and leather, and is definitely worthy of a pre-dinner spritz
Untitled, the debut scent from avante-garde Fashion house, Maison Martin Margiela, £45 for 30ml (0800 123 400) is a must for super-stylish men who can’t afford his threads. Reminiscent of freshly cut grass offset by amber and jasmine, you don’t have to be cool to indulge. But it is unisex, so mind your lady doesn’t get her mitts on it!

BODY MAINTENANCE
“Over the past 10 years,” says Grooming expert, Jason Shankey, “Men have realised that looking good offers them more opportunities, whether that is within their employment or with a partner. Grooming makes a man more marketable and makes them feel better too.”
According to Shankey back, chest, shoulder waxing and foot grooming are the most popular treatments. “Men want to look good on the beach and at the pool and the hairy chest is no longer considered an attractive look.”
Shankey’s grooming salon (www.jasonshankey.com) is the ultimate in bachelor chic and with a endless menu of male-friendly treatments, from pedicures (£26) and hand massages (£22) to a plethora of waxing treatments (starting at £13), it’d be rude not to.
Waxing has become so mainstream that celeb waxing joint, Strip (www.stripwaxbar.com) clocked up a staggering 47 per cent increase in male waxing over the past year. Using MANifico wax, favoured by well-honed Aussie surfers it guarantees a fuzz-free result, without the usual post-wax rash or stubbly regrowth that often occurs. And it’s a remarkably less painful than you’d imagine.
Bushy brows and monobrows are high on the agenda too. They can be waxed but for a more effective and polished look experiment with threading. An age-old Asian technique, it involves the removal of facial hairs by twisting two pieces of thread but don’t do this at home boys. Rock up to one of Shavata’s Brow Studios and tame your face caterpillars in a flash (www.shavata.co.uk).
When it comes down to tanning, permatans are so Eighties. But if you must indulge lay off the sunbeds and opt for a professional spray tan. Xen Tan (www.xen-tan.co.uk) is the Rolls Royce of the tanning world. Its subtle formula won’t leave you tango-ed and it has a delicious vanilla fragrance.

HAIRCARE
Never a truer statement has been made than “Hair Maketh Man,” and for spring/summer, hairstyles have taken a retro twist.
Greg Mendham, Senior Stylist at London’s celebrated MichaelJohn Salon (www.michaeljohn.co.uk) says, “Men are going for short back and sides at the moment but kept fairly long on top for versatility.”
There’s nothing wrong with the odd trip to your local barbers if you’re after a number one all over but a well-cut mop is priceless. Not only will you hair look healthier, cut correctly it should maintain the same shape for long periods of time without the dreaded Cousin It factor.
MichaelJohn is the one-stop salon for the ultimate model mop and they even throw in a head massage to ease the pain of parting with your pennies. (MichaelJohn, from £35).
It’s also wise to invest in formulated shampoos if you suffer from Dandruff (ie -you’re positive you’ve washed all your shampoo out and you still have flakes of scalp flutter onto your shoulders) or you’ve started to thin out on top.
Use REF.523’s Anti Dandruff Shampoo, £8.50 (www.hairtec.com) twice a week to maintain a moisturized scalp and a flake-free barnet. Or wash with LAB SERIES’ Root Power Treatment Shampoo, £25 (www.mankind.co.uk) to help encourage thicker, fuller looking hair.
Mendham recommends styling hair with Ruff Clay from Redken for a disheveled look or pulling it back off your face with Ruff Paste by Redken for a Mayfair City Slicker type style.
If you’re a wax kind-a-guy, Frederic Fekkai has introduced a new Coiff Piecing & Forming Wax £16 (www.spacenk.com) that will hold your style, without leaving a greasy residue. Remember - a little goes a long way.
And if you're looking for an elite finish in the company of your own home, check out celebrity hairdresser, Andrew Barton's debut men's range. Starring a six piece conditioning and styling line-up, snap up his multi-tasking All In One Hair & Body Wash, £2.95(www.andrewbarton.tv) from 19 April, for a simple and quick addition to your grooming regime.

SHAVING SUCCESS
For the ultimate shave, look to the purveyors of the shaving world Truefitt & Hill (www.truefittandhill.co.uk). Established in 1805 they have barbershops across the globe and they’re the Royal Warrant holders to H.R.H., The Duke of Edinburgh, so you know they mean business.
If you’d rather adopt the Do-it-Yourself approach rather than shell out then follow Truefitt & Hill’s tried and tested grooming rules and combine them with our product suggestions.
1. Preparation is crucial. The trick is to shave during or post showering and allow the heat to soften your beard. Dermalogica Daily Clean Scrub, £23.80 (0800 591818 ) is an effective exfoliator that will shed dead skin skills, give your pores a deep clean, and minimise ingrown hairs.
2. Apply a pre-shave oil to protect the skin from the razor blade, allowing the razor to glide smoothly, reduce irritation and nourish the skin. If you don’t possess full-blown whiskers, L’Occitane’s Organic Shaving Oil, £14 (http://uk.loccitane.com) contains organic Wild Juniper essential oil and it’s transparent appearance makes it ideal for goatees, side-burns and moustaches. Alternatively The Body Shop’s For Men Maca Root Wash-off Shave Oil, £8 (www.thebodyshop.co.uk) will do the same job but it’s cheap as chips.
3. Truefitt & Hill recommend applying glycerin shaving cream using a badger hair saving brush. However, we were equally impressed by COWSHED Bullocks Smooth Shaving Cream, £15 (www.cowshedonline.com). Wet your face first and then massage the cream into your skin. The refreshing orange smell will ensure an uplifting shave.
4. Shave. To prevent irritation or razor burn never shave against the grain. Always work with or across. Dapper dandies should invest in appropriate apparatus such as the Edwin Jagger, Fusion Razor which is compatible with the Gilette Fusion blades, £48 (www.brummellsoflondon.com). The black finish and sleek design certainly looks the part but if you’re happy with a disposable number, you can’t go wrong with King of Shaves Azor M, £5.25 (www.shave.com/azor ). Ergonomically considered the new alloy handle and flexible hinge action ensure a sharp shave.
5. Finally rinse off and splash cold water to close pores and finish with a soothing moisturizer or aftershave balm. REN’s Bioactive Formula, £19.50 (www.renskincare.com) is ultra-soothing and cooling, and it also contains Pumpkin Fruit Enzymes to help prevent ingrown hair. Or go organic with Neal’s Yard NYR MEN Calming After-Shave Balm, £14.30 (www.nealsyardremedies.com). Featuring herbal extracts of Calendula and lavender to soothe, witch hazel and olive, this light lotion gives an ultra-smooth finish.

Blog: OUR GROOMING EDITOR - JAMES YORK - REVIEWS AUSTRALIA’S NUMBER ONE GROOMING RANGE; MOOSEHEAD (16.04.10)
For a brand that started off with a heavy focus on men’s hair, Moosehead has definitely evolved. He’ll now see it stocked in an array of retailers, with far more choice in the range than ever before. This is another Aussie immigrant to our shores – and very welcome it is too.
As his other half, you need to get the low down on this curious looking animal brand; you may need to fill that man shelf with Moosehead on his behalf. Lest he starts smelling like an actual moose and nobody wants that, do they?
DIRTY BOY BODY WASH - 5 stars
This is triple whammy of outstanding cleanliness. It will suffice for hair, face and body - saving space on his man shelve for the more lavish moisturisers and shaving creams out there on the market.
It has an invigorating fruity nose that will put some punch into his washing. Easily lathered up into an energy-infused foamy joy, this tube will last a long time in spite of its three roles in his routine. Having used this for a month, it truly can be called “revitalising” – in fact, the day it ran out was a very sad one indeed.
LOOK BUFF FACE SCRUB – 3 stars
This is a serious face scrub. Enriched with Jojoba and Shea butter, Look Buff has both the gravel it needs to fight ingrown hairs and unplug his filthy man pores. It also lathers up a little.
Just a small squeeze of this scrub resembles a crystallised gel and it smells pretty good too. It would have scored higher, but for a couple of things. Look Buff wasn’t very easy to fit into an existing shaving routine - especially if he uses other brands shaving products. The packaging says use twice a week and really, what man can remember that kind of precise direction? Not many at all.
GRUBBY PUTTY – 3.5 stars
The large tub contains a matte-effect, strong-hold hair putty. It is a solid hair product, make no mistake. It looks a little bit like a really light vanilla Gu moose, but don’t let him be fooled, Grubby Putty cannot be ingested.
It can be healthily spread on his head - he shouldn’t use too much though, it does tend to clump up and thin out hair if over applied. The consistency is deceptively soft for its hold factor, so he may try and over-apply. It’s not that it will grease over his hair, it just overloads it. Nothing about this product lets him down, but this is a very competitive sector and Aussie hair faces different challenges to Brit hair. One wonders if they need a bit of time to absolutely nail their proposition. Still, bang for buck and sniff for style, this is a well-rounded tub of putty.
Available at Sainsburys and Waitrose. For more information, visit http://www.moosehead.com.au/

Tried & Tested... DETOX FACE MASKS (16.04.10)
Spring clean your skincare regime with our pick of detoxifying face masks.

MATIS REPONSE PURETE PURE PEEL FACE MASK, £24.50 for 50ml (www.matis-uk.com)
What they say: Matis Reponse Purete is formulated using high performance ingredients and the best of nature and science to effectively treat oil-prone skin. Pure Peel Mask is a new beauty step to purify, perfectly matify and deep-cleanse. Its second-skin effect visibly transforms the skin texture and your complexion will be left fresh and more luminous.
The Results: I’m a low maintenance girl in my approach to beauty and don’t tend to use face masks very often – but as this is a peel-off mask, it seemed very easy to use, which really appealed to me. As I hoped, the mask was easy to apply and was unscented, which suggested that it would be gentle on my skin. I liked the novelty of being able to peel it all off in one go and although this means you have to be gentle to ensure it doesn’t break up, unlike washing, you don’t need to worry about any of the product getting in your eyes. I didn’t notice any immediate improvement to my skin, which was slightly disappointing as I like to see results straight away. But as I was given time to try the mask a couple of times (it should be used twice a week), I started to notice a gradual improvement. I would recommend it.
Best for: Ease of use.

LUSH BRAZENED HONEY FRESH FACE MASK, £6.45 for 75g (www.lush.co.uk)
What they say: When you’re all worn out, perk up your skin with this rejuvenating honey and herb mask. This one is great for detoxifying very tired skin. There’s masses of honey, almond oil, fresh lime juice and eggs, plus a blend of oils of vetivert and juniper berry- great to help eliminate toxins. It tingles as it touches your skin, then warms, refreshes, detoxifies, calms and feeds.
The Results: I have mature skin and tend to invest in pricier, science-led brands so I was a bit dubious when I received this “homemade” style mask to trial. The product is quite difficult to apply, as it is presented in a tub; I think I’d have preferred a squeezy tube. As one of Lush’s Fresh face masks, it has to be kept in the fridge. I liked that this suggested it was only full of natural ingredients, rather than harsh preservatives, but it also meant that it was a very thick consistency when I came to apply it. The cold feeling is soothing to skin and would be very refreshing to use in the summer months. The scent was a fairly strong blend of herbs, spices and honey, which is unusual for a beauty product, but I certainly didn’t find it offensive. It gently exfoliates as it is rinsed off, leaving skin feeling very clean and smooth. My face was left feeling softened, with a rosy glow, which lasted until morning. This has exceeded my expectations and I will certainly be purchasing it as a good value pick-me-up in future.
Best for: Value for money

EVE LOM RESCUE MASK, £28 for 50ml (www.beautyexpert.co.uk)
What they say: Eve Lom Rescue Mask is an indulgent, dual-purpose product which can act as an intensive emergency treatment mask as well as a weekly deep pore cleanser that treats blotchy, irritated and congested skin that is prone to breakouts. It is specifically designed to enhance cleansing, exfoliation and decongestion through its special camphor based complexion booster, which stimulates circulation to improve the appearance of tired, dull skin, minimise signs of puffiness and reduce uneven skin tone.
The Results: My hectic lifestyle means that I haven’t been taking the best care of my body recently and this has been reflected in my skin, most notably with stress breakouts on my forehead and between my eyes, so the trial couldn’t have come at a better time. The mask has a strong, medicinal scent of camphor. The smooth formula is easy to apply and wasn’t too thick, as I’ve previously experienced when using clay-based masks. It dries quickly onto the face, which was definitely a benefit for me. Personally, I find twenty minutes is a long time to dedicate to using a mask, but this allowed me to get on with other chores whilst the mask worked its magic. The effects of the mask were immediately apparent and lasted all week. I was initially concerned that using a detox mask would draw out impurities and make my skin worse in the short-term, but this wasn’t the case at all. I loved how it evened out my skin tone, reducing the redness that accompanies my inflammation, and firmed my skin.
Best for: Skincare emergencies

ORIGINS CLEAR IMPROVEMENT ACTIVE CHARCOAL MASK TO CLEAR PORES, £17 for 100ml (www.origins.co.uk)
What they say: When environmental toxins, dirt and debris get under your skin, its waste filtering system gets jammed, pores get clogged, skin looks cloudy. Clear Improvement, nature’s complexion clean-up crew, gets to the bottom of skin’s overcast condition and clears the way for it to act its best. Activated charcoal acts like a magnet to draw out deep dwelling pore-cloggers, White China Clay absorbs environmental toxins, Lecithin dissolves impurities.
The Results: I liked the fact that the tube was clear, so that I could see the product inside – it gives the impression of simplicity, natural ingredients, and purity. The product is easy to use - clear instructions advise using a hot, moist towel to open pores before applying the mask for optimum results. I really liked the ritual aspect of this - it’s a nice way to feel pampered at home when time or funds are lacking for a professional treatment. When you first apply it, there is a slight tingling sensation as it sets to work and as it dries, it feels soothing and firming. It is unscented, which makes it ideal for those with low tolerance. My skin felt deeply cleaned after use. I wouldn’t call this product a miracle worker, as there are no long-term benefits, even when used over a period of time. But I would definitely recommend it to those with oily skin looking for immediate results.
Best for: Oily skin

SOAP & GLORY NO CLOGS ALLOWED DEEP PORE DETOX MASK, £10 for 100ml (www.boots.com)
What they say: A super, self-heating 5-minute deep pore detox face mask suitable for all skin types. This is a deep-cleansing treatment particularly ideal for greasy and blackhead-prone skin. It is specially formulated with our Colour Changing Active and 1-minute Poreclear technology.
The Results: I love Soap & Glory products and this product was no exception. It is presented in an easy-to-use tube, with clear instructions, and a handy sponge for removing it, which avoids the standard mess associated with clay-based masks. The product has a fresh, fruity scent, with a hint of menthol and is extremely quick to use. Name a gimmick and this product has it – self-heating, check; colour changing, check. This product truly does “what it says on the tin” and delivers impressive results. My skin did tingle slightly, so I wouldn’t recommend this to those with sensitive skin. I wear heavy makeup every day and I liked that this really gave a deep-clean feeling, my skin felt thoroughly exfoliated and purified after use.
Best for: Speed

CLINIQUE TURNAROUND INSTANT FACIAL, £30 for 75ml (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: This five-minute pampering mask combines physical and chemical exfoliation to offer skin the resurfacing results of a light professional microdermabrasion treatment without the post-treatment irritation. It works to improve the overall quality of skin’s appearance by diminishing dullness and flaking, minimising the look of fine lines and improving skin tone.
The Results: I’ve been using the Clinique 3-step programme for years, so was intrigued to try it when I was handed it to test. The mask is simply presented in an easy-to-use tube and applies smoothly. It sets lightly on skin, with no heavy feeling and is unfragranced. I really liked that it only takes five minutes, so it’s easy to incorporate into my regime. A little goes a long way, making this good value for money. As it is rinsed off, you feel the fine granular particles gently exfoliating. I sometimes suffer from sensitivity when trying new products, but this didn’t irritate me at all. My pores appeared minimised and I could instantly see and feel a firmed effect. I’d say the main benefit of this mask is thorough exfoliation, evidenced by the renewed radiance and clean feeling it gives to skin. If you’re looking for something more intensive, I’d suggest a clay-based formula to draw out impurities as this mask is better suited to regular use. I’ll continue to have salon facials; this certainly won’t replace the benefits of a professional treatment, but I think it’s a good addition to my skincare regime now that my skin is becoming more mature.
Best for: Thorough exfoliation

Editor’s Letter (09.04.10)
I received a curious email last week, telling me about a striped nail varnish by the brand Models Own. According to the press release, the product was the result of “expert colour blending technology and years of revolutionary research.” The release went on to tell me that the “groundbreaking new formula applies a striped effect to your nails… No fiddly application here, just apply the shade of your choice and as if my magic, stripes will adorn your nails!” The launch date? You guessed it: April 1st. This was a well-thought out April Fool’s joke. I’d like to say that I fell for it, but the line that made me doubt it was: “We do not recommend applying to toes as a clinical trial showed that the polish had a mild hypnotic effect when used on feet.” I love a good April Fool’s joke and this one made the beauty industry laugh collectively – and after a year or two of recession doom and gloom, that can only be a good thing.

Clinique. I’ve had a sneak preview of Clinique’s Spring/Summer collection, ‘Brandied Bronze’, and can confirm that the launch date of May 1st is well worth marking down in your diary. The jewel in the collection’s crown is the Eyeshadow Palette (£22.50), which contains six stunning colours to compliment a summer glow. With just a touch of shimmer, along with on-trend shades such as a dusky purple and vivid teal, it is well worth the investment. Whilst the True Bronze Pressed Powder Bronzer (£20) gives every skin tone a natural, enviable glow. I’ll be wearing the collection all summer. From May 1st at Clinique Counters Nationwide.

Leighton Denny. This summer, nail polish collections are looking very demure and sophisticated, with lots of nude, beige, and taupe tones. So when I caught sight of Leighton Denny’s ‘Notorious’ (£11) – a deep, daring teal blue – it certainly stood out from the crowd. I think the polish would look fabulous in the height of summer, worn with a white sundress and tan – and I will definitely be adding a bottle to my personal collection. Leighton Denny polishes are some of the best I have ever tried – they are vibrant, glossy, and impressively long-lasting. www.leightondenny.com

South Beach Rocks. I have fallen head over heels for this oversized, purple headband from cool accessories brand South Beach Rocks (£5.95). The colour is spot on for Spring/Summer, the satin fabric looks very luxe, and I think it would look equally good worn with cute summer dresses during the day and glammed up with heels and a formal dress for a summer wedding or day at the races. The price is incredible – so whilst I’m shopping online, I may well treat myself to a collection of the brand’s fun, affordable jewellery. Get it quickly, as I think it’ll be a sell-out. www.hqhair.com

ESPA. I love indulging in pampering facials, but spending up to £100 for up to an hour on a treatment bed is sometimes hard to swallow. So when I saw ESPA’s New Advanced Skin Renewal Collection retailed at only £62 (with a combined value of £78 if purchased separately), I knew it was a good deal. The set contains three full-size products that will transform dull, winter skin in time for the spring and summer months ahead – Refining Skin Polish, Eye Complex, and Super Active Tone and Firm Concentrate. Just as luxurious as the very best facial – and the pleasure will last far, far longer. www.espaonline.co.uk

L’Occitane. Not paid your feet much attention over the winter months? Now is the time to get them ready for flip-flop season – and your first priority is finding a really good foot cream. My personal favourite is L’Occitane’s Shea Butter Foot Cream (£16.50), which strikes the perfect balance between luxurious and effective. The rich Shea Butter base absorbs quickly, transforming rough soles to baby-soft smoothness. The minty scent refreshes and cools, whilst lavender essential oil purifies, and anti-inflammatory arnica reduces redness and irritation. The tube will last for months – and you will enjoy every single application… http://uk.loccitane.com

Blog: MAKEUP ARTIST LIZ PUGH – FROM PREMIER BEAUTY WORKSHOP – SHOWS US HOW TO ACHIEVE GLOWING SUMMER SKIN (09.04.10)
To give skin that little bit of extra help following from the winter months, use Chanel Beauty Initial: an energising multi protection fluid in Healthy Glow. It has a very slight hint of self-tan, so really warms your skin tone. Besides all of the other wonderful things it does, it is also a great product for achieving glowing skin. We all need that little bit of extra help coming out of the winter months! Don’t be scared of the self-tan in it – it is ever so natural.
Secondly, I have discovered the most amazing mask; Dr Kadir Matrix Gold Mask. It feels like such a treat, goes on like liquid gold, refines and moisturises the skin with amazing results. Start using this mask twice a week and you will see a difference in no time.
Makeup trends for Spring/Summer 2010 are for glowing skin, full of highlights, and not flat. On the runways, there was a trend for super-natural bronzed beautiful skin, so easily achieved with the right products and application. This trend suits everyone, at any age.
Start going lighter on your foundation. Use less and mix with a little moisturiser to give the effect of a tinted moisturiser, instead of a full base. Apply with your hands as you would your moisturiser to really massage it into your skin. It should never look like a mask, just beautifully enhanced skin. If you have good skin, just use a little concealer where needed. I love the new Metiers De Beaute concealer - it is so creamy and you can really blend it into your skin.
For me, skin should be luminous and glowing – especially in the spring, when the light is changing and isn’t so flat. Create highlights along the top of the cheekbones, by using either Nars Multiple in Copacabana or any of Becca’s wonderful skin illuminators. You can add a little to the cupids bow for extra pout appeal!
Number one rule - don’t use powder. If you have very oily skin, then try the blotting powders, or just a little powder over the T-Zone. You don’t want to look greasy - a Spring/Summer beauty no-no!
There are some fabulous bronzers on the market now. One of my favourites is Chanel Bronze Universal – a gorgeous cream/gel texture that gives the most beautiful glow. Sometimes powder bronzers leave the skin looking a little too flat, but this bronzer is perfect and I haven’t found anyone it doesn’t suit. Nars Multilpes in Cap Vert or Malaysia are also fantastic and look great washed over the eyes too.
Bronzers should be applied where the sun naturally catches the skin - across the forehead, over the cheeks and nose, and a little over the chin. It should never be applied to the whole face; it will just end up looking like a brown mask.
Add a little colour into your cheeks with Nars Multiple in Orgasm for a peachy pink look, Riviera, for a soft pink, or Portofino for a lovely coral. They are all beautiful and will give you the glow you need.
Lips should be matte and bright. My favourite shade is MAC Lady Danger: a fabulous orange-red for a real pop of colour. For a more natural look, try MAC Close To Real, which is my favourite nude shade.
To inject some serious summer colour, a wash of blue or lilac over the eyes is a great start. Nars and MAC have some great colours, with Rimmel London and Barry M offering more budget friendly choices. As an alternative, try coloured eyeliner swept along the top lash line. Think 1980’s - this trend is still around for Spring/Summer 2010, so you can really have some fun with it!

Breaking News: SELFRIDGES REPORT 80% RISE IN FAKE TAN SALES (09.04.10)
With the media reporting that this summer will the UK’s hottest since 1976, Selfridges – home to the largest beauty hall in the world – has revealed that sales of fake tan have risen by a whopping 80 per cent in store.
With hemlines set to rise as quickly as thermometers, it seems the British public are clamouring to get their legs ready for the warm spell. Amongst the fake tan brands being snapped up, are bottles from Fake Bake, Xen-Tan, and St Tropez – whilst body scrubs from Bliss, Kiehl’s and Clarins are also reported to be flying off shelves. Hair removal is also doing well, with sales of the gadget No! No! going through the roof of the iconic stores.
David Walker-Smith, Selfridges’ Buying Director of Beauty and Menswear says; “The predicted hot weather has definitely got Britain excited about getting their pins out sooner than expected! At Selfridges we know our customers like to look their best and we offer the best product and service range to make sure they do.”

The rise in sales has come slightly earlier compared to this time last year and is spear-headed by Manchester and Birmingham Selfridges stores, where one lead fake tan brand is selling 56 per cent more stock in the regions compared to London. Selfridges Manchester Exchange has responded to this demand by introducing a Xen-tan spray tan treatment, which provides a stunning olive tan in just ten minutes.
So it’s official – white, pasty pins are no longer in fashion. We’ll be racing you to the beauty counters in time for the heat wave…

Treatment Review: PINKS BOUTIQUE INDONESIAN MANICURE (09.04.10)
What it promises: More than the average manicure, this thoughtfully researched Indonesian themed treatment has been devised by the husband and wife team at Pinks Boutique after many trips to the Far East. It uses organic minerals and natural oils in products specially blended in the UK to condition hands, nails and cuticles, combining them with deep massage and acupressure techniques to wipe out stress and promote good circulation and healthy nail growth. The treatment also includes a mini relaxing head and shoulder massage and an Eastern-inspired massage for feet to help boost wellbeing and leave you with a spring in your step!
What happens: The treatment is billed as more of an experience than a traditional manicure, so I was taken by my therapist into a deliciously scented therapy room to have my manicure complete with luxury massage-style chair. First my feet were cleansed using lime oil-infused water served up in an authentic Indonesian bowl, and then, while listening to soothing Eastern-style music, my hands and nails were cleansed using fresh lime and a hand soak with sweet orange blossom. The serious work of sorting my cuticles and buffing the backs and palms of my hands then got underway. The therapist used a cuticle oil with rose oil, which seemed to have an instant softening effect – and a hand exfoliant with dead sea crystals, which I watched lift away dry flaky skin. Next came my favourite bit: the full arm and hand massage which lasted a blissful 10 minutes, and then, while the oils soaked into my hands and nails, I was treated to a mini head and shoulder massage that worked miracles on my aching neck and I didn’t want to end! Finally, my hands and feet were coated with the moisturising shea butter loaded balm that helps seal in moisture and my hands were given one coat of clear polish to complete the natural look. I was then left alone to relax for five minutes or so with a calming fruit tea blend!
The Results: My nails looked brighter and fresher for days after the treatment and the skin tone of my hands improved too. This is not an express treatment or a regular manicure and something you’d have to set time aside to have as a pampering treat – but it is well worth it and a great gift idea for stressed out friends and family!
Price: £43 for 75 minutes.

Feature: MAKEUP ARTIST – SPRING/SUMMER 2010 KITS (09.04.10)
We’ve spoken to six of the UK’s top makeup artists to find out which colours, cosmetics, lotions, and potions have made it into their kits for Spring/Summer 2010.

CASSIE LOMAS
Cassie Lomas, makeup artist and spokesperson for Bourjois, shares her Spring/Summer essentials.
To give an instant lift to pale winter skin, I swear by St. Tropez Bronzing Spray for the face and body. A quick spritz of this spray in the morning promotes a subtle healthy looking golden glow.
To banish dark circles and signs of fatigue I love Bourjois' new Healthy Mix Concealer. It covers well with its creamy texture and conceals blemishes effectively. I also like to update my kit with a lightweight moisturising cream, which is always useful to prep models skin before makeup. My latest one is by a french brand called Embryolise – it’s a favourite of models all around the world too.
In order to promote a lovely dewy glow to the skin, I use Shu Uemura Shimmer Mousse as a primer, before applying foundation. For spring and summer, I favour cheek tints, which tend to be lighter than powder versions and last all day.
Daniel Sandler's Watercolours for cheeks offer the perfect combination of longlasting waterproof cheek colour and amazing shades. I regularly swap my mascaras and I’m always on the look out for the latest innovations. Bourjois' new Volume Glamour Ultra Care is my new favourite, as it’s especially formulated for sensitive eyes, with a gentle formula that nourishes the lashes and gives them full volume too. Another product from Bourjois that promises to give an instant update to the new season is So Laque Ultra Shine in Tangerine Fatal, a wonderful on trend hot coral.
For hair, I love Bumble Bumble Surf Spray - it gives a lovely effortless texture to locks, which is perfect for my shoots!
Finally, I'm a big fan of Batiste Dry Shampoo, as its great for freshening up models’ hair on shoots – and they have just launched a version for brown and black hair, so there’s no more tell-tale powder marks!

MELISSA EVANS
Makeup artist Melissa Evans - Co-Founder and Director of makeup for ClickMakeover.com - gives us an insight into her essential kit for the season ahead.
Fresh, dewy skin always looks great in the springtime and I tend to swap heavier foundations for lighter textures. I will make sure that I have plenty of Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturiser in my kit and her new oil free formula is perfect as the weather warms up.

For jobs where I want to give the skin more of a glow, I will be packing Rodin Olio Lusso, which can be massaged into the cheekbones after moisturising for added lustre.
Coral is a big trend this year, and I have raided the Bobbi Brown counter to get the Cabana Corals collection. The new Pot Rouge in Caba Coral is a fresh way to add a hint of coral to almost any skin tone.
Adding new nail varnishes to my kit is a spring ritual. I always look out for Barry M’s latest nail varnishes, as they are usually bang on trend – and new launch ‘Coral’ is spot on for the spring, when its time to ditch dark nails for something a litter brighter.
I will also be adding new Chanel nail varnish Particuliere to my kit – and this is also the go-to brand for on-trend, neutral eye make p. Les 4 Ombres De Chanel in Kaska Beige is beautiful and I expect I will using it a lot for jobs over the next few months.
Spring may be about lighter makeup, but I am never without mascara – and Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara definitely lives up to the hype.
I love Bobbi Browns Shimmer Brick in the new Nectar shade - other brands may have imitated this iconic product, but I think the Bobbi Brown version is still the best.
I have started to use the new Nars Orgasm illuminator and it’s as addictive as the original Nars Multiple, which is a perennial favourite for spring and summer looks.
And finally, for a touch of girly chic, I will be using some of the new MAC Give Me Liberty of London range – gorgeous packaging and lovely colours – what’s not to like? I’m using the lipglosses in Frankly Fresh and English Accent.

DANIEL SANDLER
Top Celebrity Makeup Artist Daniel Sandler tells us what will be making it into his kit for spring and summer.
Sisley Sunleya Age Minimizing Sun Protection SPF 15 works perfectly underneath anyone’s makeup who is spending time outside - especially models on shoots and any bride who will could be out in the sunshine. This product also acts as a great face primer.
I apply Bourjois Mineral Matte foundation as a finishing touch to fix makeup or use it as an on-the-go touch-up on shoots.
Slendertone for Face is great for use before makeup application. It helps tone the face and neck and gives the illusion of a mini facelift. It works wonders in a very short time.
Clarisonic Facial Cleansing System used before makeup application removes dead skin cells and improves blood circulation – so you need only apply a little blusher to look healthy. It peps up even the most lacklustre of complexions. This cleansing system has changed how my own skin looks – it’s amazing!
Daniel Sandler Tangerine Lip Shine lipstick SPF15 has a wonderfully sheer and shiny orange tone that nourishes and protects lips. It suits every skintone.
I love Omorovicza Sun Kiss Bronzer Lotion for face, because it gives the most naturally tanned finish – and when used on its own, you can skip foundation. The colour is natural and convincing as a real tan. I use it on myself when going out at night and want to look super-healthy.
Liz Earle Superskin Eye and Lip Treatment is a great product to revitalise fine lines and skin texture on lips and under-eyes. You only need a little bit to thoroughly hydrate skin and help under-eye concealer to not cake or separate.
Estée Lauder Black Smoke Signature Quad eye shadows will definitely make it into my kit this spring. I love the sexy, smoky shades - they are so easy to apply and each shade works so well to go from subtle and sexy, to seriously smoky and stunning in an instant.
Dior Long Wearing Nail lacquer in Violet Argent is wonderfully lilac, yet mysteriously expensive-looking with silver grey highlights.
Glo Minerals Globody Glisten looks incredible on bronzed or pale skin. You have to try this lotion, becuase it makes skin look like a million dollars. Each time I apply it to a celebrity, they look like they’re off to grab an Oscar.
Finally, Clinique Instant Lift For Brows is my favourite brow filler. The Soft Blonde is especially good, as it’s not too orange, which is often the case with this shade from other brands. Plus the brow highlighter makes this a must-have essential item.

CHASE ASTON
The Body Shop’s International Makeup Artist Chase Aston gives us an insight into the products he will be using this season.
After I have cleansed and toned, I always use Clinique’s new All About Eyes Serum - this amazing gel instantly reduces tired and puffy eyes.
Flawless, natural looking skin is key, so I always prepare and prime the complexion using Laura Mercier Oil-Free Foundation Primer. Smooth it all over the face and neck, and allow it to fully absorb.
For a radiant, matte complexion, I adore Bobbi Brown Natural Finish Long Lasting Foundation SPF15. I apply it using The Body Shop Foundation Brush, which gives a flawless, natural finish.
My favourite pressed powder at the moment is Sisley Phyto-Poudre Compacte in Transparent Matte. This super fine, light pressed powder sets the foundation, whilst allowing the skin to breathe and look fresh and natural.
To create an elegant nude eye look, I use Givenchy Le Prisme Yeaux Island Camaieu Eye-Shadow Palette in Island Sun. These divine natural golden hues can be used to shape, shade, and contour the eyes for the perfect nude look.
My makeup always has a pop of bright colour, so I love The Body Shop Shimmer Cubes in Palette 19. These four fabulous shades can be applied dry for a sheer, seamless, shimmering finish, applied with a damp eye-shadow brush to create intense accent colours, or mixed together to re-create this seasons retro 70’s eye trend.
For fabulous lashes in one swipe, I am lusting after Lancome’s new Hypnose Drama Mascara in Black - an absolute makeup must have!
My favourite brow pencil is the new Clinique Instant Lift For Brows – a duo brow pencil and highlighter pen. Use it to shade brows naturally and highlight along the brow bone.
My makeup must-have for lips is The Body Shop LipScuff Exfoliator, which I always use to remove any dry and flaky skin from the lips. To moisturise and prep the lips before any lip colour, I smooth Sisley Re-Nutriv Lip Balm all over.
For a sheer, natural look for the day, I love The Body Shop Love Gloss Lip Gloss in 02 Golden Coral and Christian Dior Dior Addict Ultra Gloss in 556-Coral Fantasy.
To re-create the perfect elegant nude lip look I love Estee Lauder Michael Kors very Hollywood Lipsheen/Lipstick in Honey Blonde, so elegant yet so modern shade that compliments all that wear it.

LYNN TAYLOR
Celebrity Makeup Artist Lynn Taylor shares her essentials for Spring/Summer 2010.
As the days are brighter (hopefully) and fabrics we wear lighter and brighter, makeup for spring/summer 2010 should be simple, fresh, healthy with more focus for colour on the lips and cheek.
I will be using shades of mink, neutral and earth tones, a touch of forest green, and lavender/grey hues. For lips, barley-there nudes, dynamic pinks, diva reds, or Victorian blood vampire stains.
Products that give radiance and luminosity to the skin are still big in the summer. Switch your foundation for a tinted moisturiser and be more daring with cheek colour. Products that are multi-functioning have SPF, skin benefits; lip plumping effects and that feel luxurious are a must.
A touch of bronzer worn with a blush colour will give a ‘I’ve just been lying by the pool’ glow. I like Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Powder and NARS Laguna (a classic colour for slight bronzing effect). Be careful when applying bronzers, which should in my opinion NOT be used all over the face, (this will look too flat and muddy. Use them only on the cheekbones, across the bridge of the nose and the temples, and the décolletage, bare shoulders, under the jaw line occasionally.
A light, brightening eye cream, such as the Shiseido Hydro-Powder adds a touch of colour to enhance the eyes – and the shimmer effect flatters Spring/Summer looks.
Finish with a pink or red pout. The right red can be stunning against sun-kissed skin – and, of course, lashings of mascara. Good buys include DIOR Addict Lip Colour in Pink Lust, NARA Lip Gloss in Easy Lover, Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte, in Provocative Pink, Dior Skinflash Primer, and Hourglass Prodigy Lip Gloss in Pulse (golden strawberry).
For eyes, treat yourself to Lorac Starry Eyed Baked Eyeshadow Palette and Shisheido Makeup Eccentuating Stick In Rouge Flush (great on cheeks and lips), Makeup Hydro-Powder, a fabulous creaseless cream eye colour in Goldlights, Aqua Shimmer and Violet Visions, Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Powder and NARS Laguna.

ATHENA SKOUVAKIS
Take tips from makeup artist Athena Skouvakis on creating the perfect Spring/Summer look.
A colourful pout is a big trend for Spring/Summer 2010 - and red is the colour that must be in every girl’s makeup bag. It instantly adds glamour to your look. My favourite is Collection 2000's Volume Boost lipstick in Red Red. It has a true 1950’s feel and leaves lips feeling moist and plump, with a semi matte finish.
Black Kohl Eyeliners are also essential to intensify your eye makeup for day or evening. Kohl Pencils are softer than regular pencil liners, so you get a much bolder effect. Just line and smudge for a no-fuss smoky eye. My favourite is the Magic Kohl Eyeliner Pencil in Black by Givenchy. It has a waxy finish and helps glide over the eyelid and is super soft, so great for sensitive eyes.
Glowing skin was everywhere on the catwalk for Spring/Summer. To achieve this at home, use self-tanners. They can be used a few times a week to achieve a healthy-looking glow. The Self Tanning Lotion & Colour Dial by PIZ BUIN is a self-tanning lotion that can be customized to your own needs and is great for hesitant self tanners. It allows you to put colour control in your own hands. The PIZ BUIN Self Tanning Shimmering Lotion is also great for a quick fix for summer parties.
Makeup wipes are always in my kit and I love Neutrogena’s Deep Clean Wipes. They are oil-free and even remove waterproof mascara.
Finally, concealer is always a good trick after a few late nights and Collection 2000 Illuminating Touch Concealer does just the trick. It hides any dark circles, is available in 3 different shades, and comes in a pen with a brush so is very easy to use and at a great price.

Tried & Tested – FAIRTRADE BEAUTY PRODUCTS (09.04.10)
Embrace your green side this spring, by switching your regular products to eco-friendly alternatives. We’ve tested six Fairtrade beauty products.

YES TO CARROTS C THRU THE DRY SPELL DELICIOUSLY RICH BODY BUTTER, £6.99 (www.yestocarrots.com)
Fair Trade credentials: The Yes To Carrots crew have set up non-profit organisation, Yes To Carrots Seed Fund, to help provide under-served communities to create self-sustaining organic food sources.
What they say: This cream blend includes carrot seed oil and juice, Pumpkin and Dead Sea Mud, and promises to be ideal for very dry skin.
The Results: The cream felt very rich and I was worried that it would be too greasy even for my dried-up old skin – but after rubbing it in, the cream absorbed immediately. It left my skin feeling moisturised and silky-soft - a new experience for me! The smell wasn’t cloying like some 'dry skin' creams, but actually quite refreshing and zingy. The only negative thing I would say about it, was that the plastic film on the top was really awkward to remove - coming off in little pieces. If they could sort that, it would pretty much be a perfect product. My skin loved it and I would definitely use again!

LUSH FAIR TRADE FOOT LOTION £7.95 (www.lush.co.uk)
Fair Trade credentials: Fresh, homemade bath and body products, which are ethical, against animal testing, and kind to the planet. Lush is big on sourcing sustainable palm oil and raising awareness of the devastating impact palm-oil exports is having on the rainforests. For this foot lotion, fair trade organic butter has been bought from Concado - a small group of Dominican small-scale farmers.
What they say: Keeps your little piggies soft, supple and minty. Minty revitalization for feet with fairly traded cocoa butter. Spearmint and peppermint essential oils relieve aches and cool hot feet again.
The Results: I love the small, travel-friendly tub, which was covered with interesting information about Concado and Fair Trade. The creamy lotion smelt lovely and minty as promised, and has a cute bubble-gum shade of pink! This soothed and revitalised my tired tootsies after being stuffed in socks and boots all day, and I’d recommend this to everybody. You can actually feel the silky lotion working its minty magic for ages after too. Great price, packaging, smell, look and feel. I was even tempted to taste a bit (but held back).

OJON RUB OUT DRY CLEANSING POWDER, £16. (www.ojon.co.uk)
Fair Trade credentials: This ‘wild-crafted’ beauty range uses naturally-derived and responsibly sourced raw ingredients found in the world’s rainforests and provides a steady source of income for the indigenous groups that harvest them. A portion of revenues also goes to the Miskito Indian tribes to help preserve the rainforests and their traditional lifestyle.
What they say: Refreshes and recharges hair and scalp without water and helps eliminate excess oil and product build-up, increasing hair volume at the root.
The Results: I wash my hair every two days, so a product that cleanses and re-volumises between washes would be very welcome on my bathroom shelf. This powder comes in an easy-to-apply tube. Once you massage it into the scalp, you need to brush your hair for further distribution. The powder proved a bit difficult to work evenly through the hair with the brush and left my hair feeling quite dry. It did, however, look like I had just washed it, so I would save it for bad hair days or when I was in a hurry.

GREENPEOPLE BODY BLISS MOISTURISING BODY LOTION DIVINE ROSE! £17.50 (www.greenpeople.co.uk)
Fair Trade credentials: The first company in the world to supply organic fair trade shea butter employment (providing a fair wage and good working conditions for a community of 600 women), they also buy fair trade organic cocoa from small-scale farmers, and organic essential oils from cool, local projects in India and South Africa.
What they say: This award-winning body lotion restores skin softness and elasticity. Light, natural and divinely scented with Rose, its perfect for smothering all over the body after a shower or bath and leaves skin gently scented.
The Results: I wasn’t sure about the scent when I first smelt it – you will either love it or hate it. For those that like deeply floral scents, this lotion will be a rosy, fragrant dream, but if not then it might be a tad overpowering. The texture is lovely and creamy and the scent toned down as soon as it was applied to skin. It absorbed quickly and left my skin feeling very soft and smooth. I liked the packaging too and the pump makes it economical and easy to apply.

LAVERA SELF-SHIMMERING SPRAY. £15.50 (www.lavera.co.uk)
Fair Trade credentials: The Lavera brand includes more than 300 natural and organic skin care products. Raw plant materials from certified organic agriculture are used from fair trading and Third World projects, along with environmentally-friendly manufacturing processes. Ingredients are so natural managers actually taste them at the company plant!
What they say: Easy to apply and easily absorbed, this is an eco-friendly choice for those searching for a skin-friendly, natural-looking tan that’s free from synthetic ingredients.
The results: I’ve never used self-tan before, so I was worried about ending up blotchy or tangoed – but it put my mind at rest to know that the product was organic, so would surely be forgiving to my skin. The product was easy-to-use, with a surprisingly pleasant fragrance (I’d heard most smell like marmite) and the delicate shimmer boded well. Three to five hours later, even after a shower, my ordinarily pasty white legs were not orange as feared, but did look like they might actually be presentable in a skirt. I’ll need to work on my ‘even distribution’ but will definitely give it a go and, who knows, I might even be able to put the tights away this summer.

PRIMAVERA SLEEP THERAPY ROLL-ON LAVENDER. £11.24. (www.primaveralife.co.uk)
Fair Trade credentials: Primavera is big on environmental and social health. It believes in ethical business practices and pays fair prices to farm partners and suppliers worldwide. They also nurture long-term, supportive relationships with individuals
What they say: If you have trouble sleeping, apply the roll on to temples, earlobes, wrist and chest. Organic Lavender Fine Essential Oil is deeply soothing and calming.
The Results: I liked the stylish packaging of this product – although I would expect that from the price tag – and had high hopes that it would help me sleep soundly on a night flight across the Atlantic. It had a pleasant, calming scent – and I definitely felt relaxed and calm. Unfortunately, however, it made no odds when it came to reaching the land of nod. I still had to take a sleeping tablet! The smell was not that strong and when I woke up later in the night, it didn’t linger. However, it was easy to apply and I liked the animal-friendly logo on it. I’d use it again when I wanted to de-stress.

Tried & Tested: CREAM BLUSHERS (02.04.10)
Add a pretty, radiant glow to your complexion this spring with an easy-to-blend cream blusher.

ESTÈE LAUDER SATIN CRÈME BLUSH IN CORAL LIGHT, £23 (www.esteelauder.co.uk) crème
What they say: Smoothes on as a cream, finishes as a luminous powder. Sculpts, highlights, and adds dimension. Enhances skin's healthy glow with soft shimmer. Buildable, extended-wear colour stays true. Won't streak or settle into fine lines.
The Results: Like all Estee Lauder products, the packaging makes this blusher worth the purchase alone - and I was really impressed with the size of the product too. I liked the texture, which glided smoothly onto skin (I followed the advice to blend while foundation was still wet), yet quickly becomes matte like a powder as it settles. Although I think this colour is slightly too dark for my pale English-Rose complexion, it would suit darker skin tones and also boost a tan during the summer months. I hate glitter in beauty products, as it tends to settle in my fine lines and I think it’s quite a young look – so I was very relieved to discover that this product was completely free of sparkle!
Best for: A sophisticated, grown-up look

LAURA MERCIER CRÈME CHEEK COLOUR IN OLEANDER, £18 (0800 1234000)
What they say: Formulated to provide translucent buildable coverage for long lasting, wearable colour, while creating naturally flushed looking cheeks with a soft, velvety finish. The silky powder allows ample play time before the product dries.
The Results: I’ve tried Laura Mercier’s bath products before, which are very luxurious, but I’ve never tried her makeup range. After trying this blusher, I am converted and want to try everything else in the collection! The blusher is very, very soft and melts like butter as you sweep your finger across it. This makes it really easy to blend into skin – and also leaves the complexion feeling smooth and hydrated. The colour is gorgeous – a pretty rose-pink that is perfect for the spring months ahead. I have an olive skin tone, but it looked equally good on my sister-in-law who has a very pale complexion. The size is very handy too – small and light enough to throw into your handbag, but with a mirror too.
Best for: A pretty spring look

CLINIQUE BLUSHWEAR CREAM STICK IN PEACHY BLUSH, £18.50 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: Cream-to-powder finish. Lightweight and easy to use. This stick formula blusher is a new found favourite.
The Results: I use blusher every day, but have never used it in stick-form, so was intrigued to test this product. I must admit that I like the convenience of it – not having to bother with powder and a brush (that usually ends up down my top before I head for work) is a real novelty and cuts down vital minutes in the morning. I also liked the texture and found it very easy to blend into cheekbones, avoiding the telltale lines that sometimes appear when I’m in a hurry! However, having oily / combination skin, I think I prefer the texture of the powder blush, but the colour is spot-on and I think it would suit every skin tone. If you have better skin than me, you would also like the way it gave cheekbones a sheen. I will definitely recommend it to friends with normal or dry skin.
Best for: The convenience

NARS CREAM BLUSH IN LOKOUM, £19.50 (www.narscosmetics.co.uk)
What they say: Moisture-rich cream finish formula that provides smooth, silky color for naturally luminous skin. Delivers long-lasting color with a velvety texture and blends easily for healthy glowing skin.
The Results: I have black skin, which is always paler in the winter, and I need something to pick it up. This terracotta-toned blusher is absolutely perfect. It gave a lovely warm tone to my complexion and made me feel much healthier and more radiant! It’s very soft and was easy to blend into skin with a finger – I didn’t get line-marks, which often happens when I use powder blushers and a brush. Better still, it had really impressive staying power, lasting well into the evening. I liked the sleek, stylish packaging and found it very useful to have a mirror in my bag too. I would recommend it.
Best for: Long-lasting colour

LIPSTICK QUEEN OXYMORON MATTE GLOSS IN DEAFENING SILENCE, £18 (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: Not only does Oxymoron offer your lips a lustrous look but it gives your cheeks a lift as well. Oxymoron is a clever must-have product that can be used day and night, office to party for all skin types and ages. It’s a must-have for every handbag. Just dab on your lips with your finger (or the mini lip brush included) then dab a little on the cheeks and you will glow like a character from a Jane Austen novel!
The Results: I was a bit dubious about using this product at first, as I was convinced it was a lip-gloss and thought it would feel gloopy and heavy on my skin. After being reassured that it also acted as a blusher, however, I have found that it’s the complete opposite! It has a much drier, more powdery texture than other cream blushers I’ve tried, which made it harder to blend. The effort is worth it though – I love the way it instantly perked up my complexion, giving the impression I had slept for eight hours the night before, when in fact my son kept me awake for most the night! I liked the way that I could slick it onto my lips too – it made the morning routine a bit simpler and with a toddler, anything that saves me a bit of time is a bonus! The packaging is very luxurious, but there’s no mirror, which would have been handy, as I could throw it in my handbag too.
Best for: Multipurpose use

CLARINS MULTI-BLUSH CREAM COMPACT IN FRAMBOISE – RASPBERRY, £16.50 (http://uk.clarins.com)
What they say: A powder cream, applied with fingertips, which in turn is a blusher, eye shadow and lip colour. Its ultra-fine, velvety cream-powder texture glides on effortlessly, giving a transparent, satin, incredibly luminous long-lasting finish. Suitable for all skin types, it's great for dehydrated skin.
The Results: I’m quite daring with my makeup, so I wasn’t surprised when I was selected to test this bright pink blusher! Despite my adventurous streak, I have pale skin and really didn’t think this would suit me. I’m very pleased I persevered! As soon as the soft, creamy blusher was blended into my cheekbones (I used my finger and it took just a couple of seconds) it softened and gave my skin a really gorgeous, rosy glow – definitely not bright enough to make me look like an 80’s raver, as I first feared! I’ve fallen head over heels in love with this product – it will work perfectly during spring and summer, when worn with a floral tea dress and big hair corsage! My only gripe is that it could do with a slightly larger mirror, but not even that is enough to put me off!
Best for: Warming up pale complexions

Editor’s Letter (02.04.10)
If you haven’t read our Green Goddess feature, make sure you take time to have a read – it gives answers to all those ‘eco-beauty’ questions that you’ve always wanted to ask, gives advice on the ingredients we should be avoiding at all costs, and suggests a few eco-brands that deserve pride of place on any bathroom shelf. If it’s been a while since you last tried eco-friendly beauty brands, you might be surprised by how far it has come… My favourite brands include Jo Woods Organics for the silky scented shower gels that lace skin with rich, delicious scent, LUSH for their eco-friendly packaging and mouth-watering bath treats, Balance Me for the spa-quality body products that are rich in essential oils, and Living Nature for their effective, yet highly luxurious skincare. The choice of green brands is now vast, so there’s no excuse not to be kind to the earth – and your body. This Easter, why not ask for a bottle of heavenly, organic shower gel, instead of chocolate? It’ll cost the same – and you might just be converted…

Victoria Health. I never realised I needed a pair until I set eyes on them – and now I simply have to own them... Victoria Health has just launched Tweezers with Attitude (£2.99 each) and they make plucking just that little bit more interesting. The bright colours mean that we will locate them in seconds in the depths of our makeup bag – and, better still, we don’t have to compromise on quality, as beneath the bright exterior lies a pair of precision slant-tipped stainless steel tweezers that pick up every single hair. My favourite is Cheryl, who bears more than a passing resemblance to our favourite X-Factor judge. Get your pair quickly – as I predict they will sell out fast. www.victoriahealth.com

Shu Uemura. Remember those striking white-tipped lashes at PPQ’s Spring/Summer’10 show? Well, the look is no longer reserved for the catwalk, as we can now get our hands on a pair of limited-edition falsies (£25), created by PPQ’s design duo Amy Molyneux and Percy Parker. Available exclusively at Selfridges from April, there are few easier (or more affordable) ways to add a dusting of high-fashion to your look. Dress them up for a glamorous evening look (the room won’t be able to take their eyes off your flutter) or style them down for a quirky, fun daytime look. Selfridges London and Manchester Trafford. Call 0800 123400.

Cult Beauty. I haven’t plucked up the courage to try it out yet, but if you are feeling confident, you can now purchase your very own Bed of Nails from Cult Beauty… Well, kind of… The Sun Mat (£55) is in fact made up of 6000 non-toxic plastic spikes and work in a similar way to acupuncture needles, helping to release oyxtocin and endorphins (the body’s own ‘happiness’ drug). At first, you are recommended to lay a sheet over it and stay on the bed for just 10 minutes, gently building it up to 20-30 minutes. It’s said to promote a good night’s sleep – so if you are suffering from insomnia, aches, pains, or feeling stressed, it’s well worth investing. www.cultbeauty.co.uk

Feature: GREEN GODDESS (02.04.10)
Immerse yourself in all things green and eco-friendly this spring… After all, combining our love for beauty and the planet can only be a win-win situation.

ECO WHAT?
Environmental, sustainable, ecological, and green, are all popular buzzwords these days - but what does it actually all mean for the beauty world?
Essentially, eco beauty can be defined as respecting ourselves, each other and the planet. Oh, and an appreciation that nature and we are integrally connected. Knowing that what we are smearing and absorbing onto our skin, body and features is not harmful to nature or us makes all the difference!
“Taking a holistic approach to skincare is to look at the bigger picture of what makes skin healthy or unhealthy” says Star Khechara, holistic practitioner and author of The Holistic Beauty Book, £12.95 (www.greenbooks.co.uk). “Using this viewpoint, it would be impossible to dismiss the ecological side to beauty; we are linked to our environment after all and depend upon it for our survival.”
“Every industry is being asked to become more responsible in its treatment of natural resources, let us vote with our purse to ensure that our skincare is not going to cause damage to us or our environment,” says Star. “After all what is the point of taking good care of your skin if there is no planet left for us to live on?”

WE ARE WHAT WE ABSORB!
“Many women don't realise that over 100,000 tonnes of man-made chemicals are dumped into so-called 'natural' cosmetics every year’,” says Charlotte Vøhtz, the founder of natural skincare company Green People.
“We can absorb up to 60 per cent of substances applied to our skin into our body, including artificial fragrances and perfumes, preservatives with hormone-like properties and chemicals with the potential to release formaldehyde, a potent irritant and neurotoxin.”
Scary stuff - but it doesn’t have to be, thanks to fab brands like Green People who make natural, organic skincare products, scents, and cosmetics for beauty chicks to enjoy, secure in the knowledge what we are slapping on our skins is nourishing and nurturing.
As holistic health practitioner and author, Star Khechara notes: “Anything that harms the environment by default harms us too and vice versa. Skincare products that are produced ethically and sustainably will be much healthier for the skin as naturally most of the toxic chemicals will have been omitted.
“Using chemicals upon the skin is not only unhealthy but they invariably end up in the ecosystem where they can cause terrible damage to our environment.”
So there you have it. Eco beauty is the way forward for healthy, happy skin (which, by the way, is the body’s largest organ) - and a healthy, happy planet.

D-I-Y GOODNESS
How much more eco can you get, than by making your very own green beauty product, picked with ingredients from the kitchen cupboard or picked from the garden?
FLOWER FAIRY OIL
Shelf-life: 6 months
Skin types: suitable for all
How to make
- In spring, gather scented blooms such as hyacinths, jonquil, lilac and jasmine.
- At home, strip the plants of any leaves and stems, and put the flowers in a big glass jar.
- Use a single flower species or a blend
- Pour on 500ml/1 pint of organic cold-pressed plant oil (sunflower or almond are excellent for this) so it covers the blossoms, and place the jar in a warm place.
- Every four or five days, strain off the oil and repeat the process with fresh flowers.
- After two weeks, it should be a gorgeous scented oil.
- Continue the process for a further two weeks to make it even stronger if desired. Once scented enough, strain the oil through a sieve.
- Strain again through a muslin-lined sieve. Using a funnel, pour the oil into the bottle.
NB: Be aware that some people are allergic to natural-scented flowers. It is wise to test the oil on a small area of skin before using all over.
How to use
Massage this light and sweetly fragrant oil into damp skin after a bath or shower, and leave to sink in for a few minutes before dressing so that clothes won’t be grease-marked. Use daily for skin as soft as a flower fairy in spring.

TOXIC BADDIES TO AVOID
More than a third of us are unaware of key ingredients in the beauty products we use, as Victoria Rogers, founder of www.toxicfreeboutique.com, discovered for herself.
''Whilst working as a professional Contemporary Ballet Dancer on world touring jobs, I began my search for healthier alternatives to the heavy cosmetics I was wearing on stage and off. I discovered that many of the beauty brands I had been using contained cheap fillers (even the expensive ones), Synthetic Fragrances, Parabens & Petroleum derived ingredients to name just a few.”
“I was aware that food has a direct effect on the body, but was not fully aware that Phthalates (often found in Synthetic Fragrance or Parfum) Parabens, (preservatives that mimic oestrogen) and other irritants, may be absorbed through the skin and may implicate a number of health issues.”
Other baddies to look out for are:
Propylene Glycol: a main ingredient in anti-freeze and also a known skin irritant found in foundation, lip products, eyeshadow and mascara. This chemical nasty actually alters the structure of the skin by allowing synthetic chemicals to penetrate and enter the blood stream.
Sodium Laureth/Sodium Laurel Sulphate: again alters the structure of the skin and allows chemicals to do the same.
Bismuth Oxycholride: found in many mineral makeup brands and often causes itching, rashes and cystic acne.

Blog: DIANE WOOD – QUEEN OF SHAVING BRAND KING OF SHAVES – GIVES HER TIPS FOR SMOOTH, SOFT, STUBBLE-FREE LEGS (02.04.10)
I grew up learning about shaving - my Dad owns Paul Molé, the iconic barbers in New York and I have helped out there since I can remember. Inspired by him I went to the Atlas Barber School in New York, gaining my Master Barber License to become one of the few female barbers to hold the title in the world – and now I’m passionate about shaving, for both men and women.
After countless hours in front of the beauty drawing board, King of Shaves has relaunched their women’s range. It’s a fresh and flirty new line, designed to be fabulous on the body and gentle on the budget. My personal favourite is Queen of . . . Ooh La La! Shaving Gel and I’d recommend using this along with my top tips for silky smooth legs….

• Try to shave at night, so your skin can ‘sleep’ when you do and isn’t exposed to the elements during the day. Always shave in the shower or bath - wet hair is easier to cut and the warm water and steam soften hair, which makes it easier to cut through.
• At all costs avoid products that contain soap or alcohol. They’re very drying on the skin (especially when coupled with shaving) and can lead to irritation and ingrown hairs. To get the closest possible shave, apply a thin layer of Queen of . . . Ooh la la! It’ll prime them perfectly.
• Always use a clean and sharp new blade. A dull blade will leave behind some of your unwanted hair and can increase your chances of getting ingrown hairs or irritation.
• To begin shaving your legs – start at the bottom of the ankle, gently glide the blades up the leg in one smooth stroke. Take extra care when shaving areas where bone is close to the skin surface, such as ankles and knees. To avoid nicks and cuts that often occur behind the ankle, flex your heel to stretch the skin while you shave. Remember when shaving - don’t press too hard, let the blade do the work.
• After shaving splash the skin with cold water to help tone and close the pores. Try not to apply or expose freshly shaven skin to anything irritating after shaving (sea water, deodorant, perfume etc.). Wait for your skin’s pores to close (about an hour if possible) to reduce the risk of irritation and then apply moisturiser to soothe and revitalise your skin.
