Feature: LITTLE BLACK BOOK (30.07.10)
Ever wished you could flick through the pages of a beauty expert’s little black book? This week, we’ve done the detective work for you, quizzing six industry insiders about their favourite addresses for beautifying, relaxing, and shopping…
DANIEL SANDLER, CELEBRITY MAKEUP ARTIST
If I had hair, I’d go to Nicky Clarke – he’s an old colleague and the salon is very chic and classy.
My favourite spa is Spa1877 in Sheffield. In Victorian days it was the largest Turkish Spa in the UK. It’s had a total facelift, but still retains the amazing handmade tiles throughout – plus, the wonderful team of therapists use Elemis products, which I love.
Both the Aqua Sana's at Center Parcs and the Sequoia Spa at The Grove transport you to another world. Whenever I have free time, I immediately give them a call so I can spend a day there recharging.
I always head to Sephora when I’m in Paris or New York to check out all the latest beauty crazes – it’s my mecca.
For online, Beautique.com and Lookfantastic.com tick the boxes for me. They both have great brands on offer plus they are linked to retail outlets, so you can sample the brands first.
Dr.Boo in New Cross Road, East Dulwich, London is the most amazing beauty emporium. The staff give you great advice. It doesn’t feel like a shop – it’s more like a club where everyone is welcome.
My biggest beauty indulgence is my fragrance: Creed: Fleur de The Rose Bulgaire, which I’ve been wearing for over 10 years. It’s a very special fragrance from their Private Collection and I don’t know anyone else that wears it, so it feels unique and I always get compliments about it.
I recently had a Genuine Dermaroller treatment from the amazing Cosmetic Physician Sach Mohan who works with Revereskin.com. My face looks younger and smoother after just one treatment and I can't wait for the next session. Here’s to turning back the ravages of time!!
SHARON HILDITCH, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF CRYSTAL CLEAR
Connect Hair Systems, in London’s Adelaide Road, are always bang on trend with the styles they offer. They are real experts at achieving perfect natural colour. If it’s good enough for Hollywood A Listers, it’s good enough for me!
Despite sharing the same address as our head office, I can still manage to switch off and relax at Crystal Clear Skin Clinic, Rodney Road, Liverpool. The thought of receiving my Crystal Clear Oxygen Deluxe treatment combined with a few hot stones placed under my shoulders and neck helps!
The Beauty Hall at Selfridges London has a fantastic choice and is always at the forefront of launching new and unusual brands. It has a big impact on my credit card each time I visit!
MAC Cosmetics’ online store is really convenient and informative – it makes buying cosmetics very easy when you don’t have the time to get out of the office. The brand is also very good at sending email newsletters with the latest trends and new collections.
Nail Nation is Liverpool’s longest established premier nail salon. It doesn’t matter what disasterous state my nails are in - I always come out with perfectly pampered nails.
My dream beauty destination is Senses Spa, The Evason, Phuket, for a totally natural, yet luxurious experience. You can take a treatment in one of their cool and relaxed treatment rooms or choose to enjoy it on the beach, with just the sounds of the ocean lapping against the shore. Pure heaven.
CHASE ASTON, INTERNATIONAL CELEBRITY MAKEUP ARTIST AND BRAND SPOKESPERSON FOR THE BODY SHOP
The Aveda Hair Institute in London’s Holborn is fabulous… I go there for the perfect haircut and gorgeous hair products, and then I relax at the juice bar for freshly squeezed juice and lunch.
In the heart of Notting Hill, there is a gorgeous boutique style city spa called Nougat, London. They have their own range of fantastic-smelling products. I always leave feeling very refreshed.
The 5* Mandarin Oriental in Chiang Mai Thailand is sensorial luxury… Once you pass the gates and check into your bungalow, all stresses and tension disappear from your body, I never want to leave!
Spa Ritual (www.sparitual.co.uk) is a great one-stop online shop – it caters for everything beauty-related. I can stock up on body and nail products - and they have also just launched the fantastic Emani mineral make up range.
Being a top makeup artist and working with A-List celebrities and supermodels, I always ensure that my hands and nails are perfectly groomed, I love the Nails Inc boutique on South Molton Street, London – it’s intimate and very friendly.
Cosmetics A ’La Carte, London SW1 is great. It’s a small and intimate makeup and beauty salon where you can go for a mini make-over or a unique personal makeup lesson. You can also create your own personal lipstick shade and they also custom-blend foundations and powder shades to perfectly match your skin-tone.
After traveling, I go for a refreshing facial and skin balancing treatment at The Sisley Spa, Urban Retreat, Harrods. I adore the Sisley skincare range - I leave feeling rejuvenated and radiant.
I’ve never had plastic surgery or Botox, but I’d never say never… For Botox or anything related to altering my complexion/facial features I would always go to the A-listers’ favorite Dr Sebagh. For plastic surgery, I would only go to someone who was highly recommended by someone that I knew and trusted
I travel to Australia on a regular basis and I always make time to travel to Temple Spa, Port Douglas. It’s one of my favourite destinations in the world. I indulge and lose myself in sheer luxury, unwind and de-stress, and banish all jet-lag before my intense work schedule begins. I also spend part of my winter vacation here, as it’s simply perfect.
LIZ WAROM, MANAGING DIRECTOR AND CO-FOUNDER OF TEMPLE SPA
New York Nails is a gem of a place, based near the New York Hilton. It’s full of fabulous therapists who are highly skilled at top-to toe treatments. I leave feeling fabulous.
My favourite destination spa has got to be Cotswold House Hotel in Chipping Campden. I love everything about the experience - from the drive into the village, the exquisite hotel and the converted coaching house spa, gorgeous treatments, products and therapists. It’s the real deal.
I always pop into Zitomer on Madison Avenue New York if I’m passing. I love that you can have a poke around and noone bothers you. They stock really unusual products alongside well-known brands. I often get inspiration there
For nails, I always go to the Spatini bar at Temple Spa as I can have a gorgeous mani/pedi and sip my favourite cocktail. Hmmm.... bliss!
When I step off a plane in Hong Kong, I always head for Daily Sauna in Mody Road Kowloon. It's not fancy, but you can walk in anytime and be guaranteed the best massage you'll ever get. £35 will buy you 2 hours of total heaven.
Fortunately for me, I can get 90 per cent of what I use with Temple Spa, but the BEST face base is Kanebo and to buy a compact is £50. It's not the cheapest, but it is the best - I've used it for 30+ years.
I’m not against the idea of Cosmetic Surgery. I’d probably go to Goring Hall hospital, which is quite near me - but not anytime soon (I hope!)
My best spa & hotel experience was the Sani Asterias Suite hotel and Spa in Halkidiki Greece - an overall fabulous memory and we will definitely go back!
Temple Spa seeks to beautifully fuse product, philosophy and spa with skincare, bodycare, aromatherapy and spa treatments that replenish, revive, renew. Temple Spa is launching Skin Truffle exclusively in Harrods on 1st September. Stay tuned to The-Beauty-Pages.com for a pre-launch review.
CATHERINE DE GROOT, CO-FOUNDER OF TRILOGY
I spent years searching for the right stylist and finally found Rachel at Haight Ashbury in Wellington, New Zealand. Rachel is a mind-reader. She knows just when to suggest a slight change to my colour or a dramatic new direction for my cut and most importantly, she knows when to throw in an extra long head massage or bring me a cup of something soothing and herbal to enjoy while I am relaxing into my appointment.
This winter my husband and I escaped to Fiji’s newly opened Intercontinental at Natandola Beach with our 10-month old baby girl. Their Four Hands massage is not to be missed and I could have spent the whole holiday unwinding in the relaxation room where you begin and end your visit. They have a lovely library and could have spent hours there - the spa is well and truly tuned in to ‘Fiji Time’ and they never seem in a hurry for you to leave.
I love stores such as Barneys in New York and le Bon Marche in Paris, which beautifully combine both fashion and beauty.
Of course I think our online store is THE online beauty destination, but I also love the organic apothecary Lovelula.com, which is based in the UK and has wonderful customer service and selection.
During a recent trip to London for work, I had a manicure at Urban Retreat at Harrods which was lovely.
My secret beauty destination is Aedes De Venustas at 9 Christopher Street in New York. It is a tiny treasure trove of beautiful fragrances – and they do simply the most beautiful gift wrapping I have seen anywhere.
With an infant and another baby on the way I am easy to please. All it takes is an hour away from the family or work and I can whip down the road to my local Spa, Brakenridge Retreat in Martinborough. I try to go regularly for pedicures and manicures. And, because the rural area in which I live is very dry and harsh on my already dry skin, I try to take an hour once every week to have a deeply moisturising facial using Trilogy Gentle Facial Exfoliant, followed by a massage using Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil and finishing with an application of Trilogy Ultra Hydrating Face Cream.
I’d be lying if I said there haven’t been times when I have pondered the virtue of cosmetic surgery but I know with conviction that it will never be an option for me. The older women whom I admire greatly have all aged naturally and gracefully with a unique sense of style and confidence that would be unattainable using cosmetic procedures. I truly believe that age is an attitude and true beauty is evident at any age.
The Four Seasons resort Bali is my dream beauty destination. There you have the most exquisite combination of a breathtaking destination and a social culture that naturally nurtures and cares for other people making the Balinese the most wonderful therapists.
SACHA BREUER, HAIR STYLIST AND CONSULTANT
My favourite hair salon is Bumble Model Project - a hip salon in the hipper-than-thou Meatpacking district NYC. I LOVE this space. It is so convenient- go there, do work on your laptop (free Wifi), get lunch... all while spending time in the chair. Genius! It’s pricey, but it’s the best service and staff. You also get a gorgeous view from the waiting area.
The Cowshed spa at Shoreditch House offers all of the brand’s trademark treatments and products - I recommend their Speedy Mani Pedi for when you’re on the go but still want good quality. It also boasts a lovely little café where tea and cakes are on sale (very British). I intend this to be a lazy Sunday regular of mine.
Sure, there are lots of amazing spas in New York City. But what makes them great? At Madison-Spa, it is the people. I headed to Madison-Spa looking forward to enjoying their hot stone massage, 5-step oxygen rejuvenation facial, and a foot reflexology session. Not only was each a fabulous service, but each was given by a different aesthetician, extensively trained and wonderful.
My favourite online beauty store is FeelUnique.com (www.feelunique.com) - they’ve got everything I need.
An immaculate set of nails is always guaranteed to put a smile on the face of their owner. I love The Nail Lounge (1 Kingly Court, London). There are plenty of treatments available - even for boys.
I adore the Thermes Marins Bali, Ayana Resort and Spa (formerly The Ritz-Carlton, Bali Resort & Spa), Indonesia. Nothing else comes close to it! They treat everyone like royalty. The staff were unbelievably nice, the grounds are immaculate, and the ocean view from the infinity pool is unbeatable. You could literally spend a week and never be bored. I can’t wait for our next trip to Bali!

Blog: ROSE-MARIE JARVIS – HAIRCARE EXPERT FOR GOODY – SHOWS US HOW TO ACHIEVE FABULOUS FESTIVAL HAIR (30.07.10)
Festival season is finally upon us and here at Goody we’ve made the very important decision to look fabulous. They’ll be no festival frump for us – we refuse to drag ourselves around in the mud with bedraggled locks, when it is possible to achieve superstar style in a few easy steps.
My advice is to go with the flow and make the best of any weather conditions the heavens can throw at you – there’s always a simple style that you can rock and make your own.
Here are my top tips:
• Don’t wash! Everyone gets paranoid about not keeping up with their daily cleaning ritual at a festival but it’s actually better to style your hair when it’s slightly dirty – it provides better hold for your style
• Choose simple styles that won’t get in your way – you can still look great without having a super-styled ‘do. One of our favourite festival looks is the ‘fat plait’ – a trend seen on the catwalks and celebrity circuit this summer: loosely pull your hair into a low plait at the side of your head and tie with an Ouchless elastic. Tug at the hair slightly to give a messy look – you’ll look stunning but people will think you’ve just rolled out of your sleeping bag!
• For emergency hairstyle changes, keep a pack of Goody Bobby Pins in your purse and a Gel Purse Brush from the Start, Style, Finish range – these pocket-sized products are the perfect remedy when you are tight on space and time so you can play with your hair on the go
• When you’re packing up your tent and making the treacherous trek back to your car, you don’t want your hair to get in the way. You can’t carry your bags AND flick your fringe out of your eyes after all! For hair you don’t need to worry about, try the StayPut range of elastics and headbands from Goody. They use innovative rubber-tread technology known as StayPut Hold™ to provide 52 per cent more hold than traditional elastics - preventing them from slipping or rolling out of the hair
Get playing and see what you can come up with. Viva la festival!
Editor’s Letter (30.07.10)
In the past few days, I’ve heard a lot of jokes in the press about David and Samantha Cameron presenting a selecting of Miller Harris Candles to the Obama on their recent trip to the States. “Candles!” the critics cry! “How inappropriate! Who wants candles?! It’s no coincidence that the jesters are almost exclusively men - and I’ve got an answer for them… Women! Women want candles! We love them! We can’t get enough of their flickering, sweet-smelling deliciousness! And when it comes from a luxurious, terribly British brand like Miller Harris, the gift becomes even more irresistible. You might joke about it boys – but take a hint from the ever-so-stylish Camerons and add it to the ‘Must Buy’ list for your loved one’s birthday or Christmas present. And here’s a hint - the most covetable, in my humble opinion, are by Miller Harris, Diptyque, or Jo Malone. Visit www.millerharris.com
The Organic Pharmacy. Last week, I had the pleasure of testing The Organic Pharmacy’s Flower Petal Deep Cleanser and Exfoliating Mask (£26.95) – and I’m thrilled to have discovered it. The pot is filled with a rose-scented powder, which should be mixed with water before being smoothed over skin. The mask contains oats, clay, milk, lavender, chamomile, rose, and geranium, which work together to draw out impurities, remove dead skin, and brighten the complexion. I’ve never seen such instant results from a face mask – my skin felt and looked noticeably more radiant after just 10 minutes. Better still, it felt ultra-luxurious to use. www.theorganicpharmacy.com
Philosophy. Have you ever walked into the bathroom and smelt notes of your precious, expensive shower gel filling the air? Realised your family is using it as frequently as you are? Well, that has happened more and more to me since Philosophy’s Senorita Margarita Shower Gel (£13) took up residence in my shower. I’m obviously not the only one who enjoys the zingy lime-scented gel, which feels silky, yet incredibly refreshing on the skin… I hope you are reading this Shower Gel burglars - you know who you are… www.johnlewis.com
Ms Pedicure. If your feet are as rough as mine after a few weeks in flip-flops, you should treat yourself to Ms Pedicure’s brilliant Sugar Foot File (£4.99). Hang it in the shower with the handy attached rope – and use the rounded edge to smooth and soften dry, flaky soles. Afterwards, simply hang it back up to dry (leaving it in water will cause it to soften and fall apart). Far cheaper than an expensive salon pedicure – but your feet will feel just as soft. Boots Nationwide.
L’Oreal. If you haven’t yet tried L’Oreal’s Perfect Clean Refreshing Gel Wash, it well worth adding to the bathroom shelf. The product contains a handy little tool called a ‘Scrublet’- a small, circular brush with flexible bristles – which helps to massage the gel into skin and create a thick, silky lather. The combination of the refreshing gel and stimulating scrublet gives an immediate boost in skin radiance – whilst over the course of a week, my complexion has felt smoother and far better balanced. Boots Nationwide.

Treatment Review: ZOOM! TEETH WHITENING, THE DARFOOR DENTAL PRACTICE (30.07.10)
What it promises: Using the revolutionary Zoom! tooth whitening system, Dr Darfoor can whiten teeth by up to nine shades in one sitting. Stains and discolouration are removed instantly, revealing a brighter, more beautiful smile. The gentle, yet effective tooth whitening process is the ultimate anti-ageing beauty treatment.
What happens: I’ve always dreamt of a gleaming white smile, but years of frequent red wine and tea consumption has done nothing but yellow my teeth. I was a bit nervous about teeth whitening, as it seemed rather drastic – but as soon as I entered No. 1, Harley Street, my apprehension disappeared. I was greeted warmly by Dr Simon Darfoor – and, as he checked my teeth, we chatted about my expectations for the treatment. He described the teeth whitening methods he offers - detailing who they are aimed at, how the processes work on a scientific level, and the results they will bring. He showed me colour examples of three teeth from his extensive library – one that was the shade of my own teeth, one that was three shades lighter, and one that was six shades lighter. We agreed I’d go for six shades lighter, which involved a two-stage whitening process. I settled into the chair, noted the pleasant view from the window over Cavendish Square, and opened my jaws wide whilst Simon fitted the mouth guard. He applied a gel to protect my gums from the bleach - happily chatting away to me as he worked, despite the fact that I was physically unable to answer! He then coated my teeth in clear peroxide gel, whilst explaining its ability to burn through a thin rubber glove - eek! Reassuringly, I felt nothing bar a slightly cold sensation. From inches away, a UV light was shone directly onto my teeth. I closed my eyes for 15 minutes and let the chemicals work their magic as jazz tunes filled the room. Simon then removed the peroxide and reapplied another coat. 15 minutes later the treatment was over and my mouth was my own again.
Results: My teeth are now impressively whiter, yet in a natural way - not Simon Cowell bling-tastic, but just what I wanted. Many friends have commented on my lovely pearly whites and the colour has encouraged me to steer clear of the red wine and tea so far - that’s six days and counting! Simon’s friendly, informative approach made me feel at ease throughout the process. It’s quick, convenient, and safe - and I’d recommend it to anyone.
Price: £450 for Zoom! Whitening. From £250 for Power Whitening.
Location: Suite V1, Third Floor, No. 1 Harley Street, London W1G 9QD. www.drsimondarfoor.com
TRIED & TESTED: BRONZERS (23.07.10)
This week, we’re testing bronzers…
JEMMA KIDD SHOW STOPPER WATER-RESISTANT BRONZER, £13 (www.asos.com)
What they say: Maxi-size bronzer that gives sheer, natural colour. Mattifying & long-lasting formula. Smooth & even application. Contains Dimethicone Copolyol, a silicon based oil, for water-resistant effect. Added anti-oxidant Vitamin E.
The Results: This bronzer is large, so not easily portable – but the fact that it’s water-resistant implies that it is long-lasting, so I wasn’t worried about leaving it home each morning. I wish I had a holiday to test its water-resistance out, but sadly not – so I tested its durability in the shower. Whilst I didn’t put my face under the stream of water, it did an impressive job at surviving the splashes, still being noticeable when I climbed out. The bronzer has glitter in it, which I’m not usually a fan of – but on skin, it appears natural and subtly reflects the light.
Best for: Holidays
BENEFIT DALLAS, £23.50 (www.debenhams.com)
What they say: This million dollar mocha powder gives a natural looking, sun-kissed rose glow that lights up any complexion. Dallas gives an outdoor glow to the indoor gal, and is pure cowgirl chic!
The Results: My skin is very pale and I found this bronzer a bit too dark – so I passed it onto a friend who had recently got back from her holiday wanted to boost her tan. She found the enclosed brush a bit fiddly, so swapped to a larger blusher brush, which gave a lovely, even-toned result. There’s no shimmer in the blusher, so the result was very natural. She said that she was impressed with the staying power too, not needing to reapply until her lunch break. One happy customer!
Best for: Boosting an existing tan
ST TROPEZ BRONZING ROCKS, £25.50 (www.lookfantastic.com)
What they say: These shimmering Bronzing Rocks provide the perfect finish to your St. Tropez tan. Simply dust over your face and décolletage for a gorgeous hint of colour, or even use them on your eyes and lips!
The Results: I was a bit worried when I saw these bronzing rocks – they look very dark and glittery and I was convinced they wouldn’t be suitable for my pale-toned skin. There’s no brush included, so I dug out my blusher brush and gently brushed over the apple of both cheekbones. I was very, very pleasantly surprised… The low-level shimmer gave my skin a lovely glow, whilst the bronzer made my skin appear naturally sun-kissed. It’s easy to control how dark you’d like it – sweep brush quickly over rocks for a subtle look, or roll the brush around the rocks for a heavier application. It’s my new must-have product and I highly recommend it.
Best for: Versatility
L’OREAL PARIS GLAM BRONZE DUO SUN POWDER, £6.66 (www.boots.com)
What they say: Enriched with golden light reflecting particles, Glam Bronze leaves skin illuminated with a "just-out-of-the-sun" look. It is an incredibly soft, shimmering powder that glides easily over the skin to form a delicate veil of glowing colour.
The Results: I recently changed my hair colour from light blonde to brunette – and I can now get away with stronger, darker makeup colours. I love the fact that this bronzer comes in two shades – Blonde and Brunette – as I know what a huge difference hair colour can make. I tested the brunette shade, sweeping the brush (which is tucked underneath the palette) over the lighter and darker colours and then applying to my cheekbones and forehead. It felt silky and was really easy to blend into skin. I was worried that it’d look too dark, but it suited my complexion perfectly and I was impressed with how my skin suddenly appeared to glow. Better still, it’s brilliant value for money.
Best for: Good value
CLINIQUE ALMOST BRONZER SPF15, £22 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: Sheer bronzing duo protects with broad-spectrum SPF 15. Versatile formula lets you customize and build your bronze from sun kissed to suntanned. Provides a natural look all-year round. Long-wearing. Oil free. For all skin types.
The Results: This product is available in a darker and lighter shade – I was handed the dark version, which is perfect for my olive skin tone. I haven’t been able to get away this year, so my skin desperately needs a boost of colour. I used the brush, which is included with the product, to sweep a mixture of both halves of the bronzer over my skin. I noticed the difference immediately, but it’s a subtle, natural look. It’s the perfect for wearing during the day and I will definitely be applying it throughout summer to give my skin a sun-kissed glow. I feel much more confident wearing this – and have even been going without foundation since I discovered it (a big thing for me!)
Best for: A subtle, daytime look
SOAP & GLORY SOLAR POWDER, £12 (www.boots.com)
What they say: Enough to glow around. Sweep the brush lightly over the bronzer, then dust onto your face, neck and décolletage for instantly sun-kissed skin.
The Results: I absolutely love the packaging – it’s fun, eye-catching, and lightweight enough to carry around in my handbag. The mirror is a great size, so will come in handy for applying all my makeup when I’m out and about. The bronzer has a luminous texture, which literally makes skin glow. Some people might find the iridescence a little too heavy for daywear, but it definitely didn’t put me off. The bronzer itself is fairly light, so it didn’t suddenly give me a tan worthy of a Caribbean beach – but it did warm and balance my skin tone within seconds. I’ve been recommending this to friends – it’s perfect for waking up dull, tired skin.
Best for: Boosting radiance
Treatment Review: FISH THERAPY PEDICURE, AQUA SHEKO (23.07.10)
What it promises: Tucked away on a discreet side street off High Street Kensington is London’s first fish therapy spa, Aqua Sheko. Inspired by a popular Asian beauty treatment, Aqua Sheko specialises in a unique type of exfoliation; by fish. Founder Karen Ho explains, “Fish therapy is an enjoyable and relaxing way to remove a build up of dead skin and maintain smooth, good looking feet all year round.”
What happens: The small salon has a minimalist, Oriental-inspired interior, with eight sterilised treatment pools in a row. My first impression was of how welcoming the staff were, offering me a cleansing tea, magazines, and explaining in detail about what would happen. The treatment, which originates in Turkey, dates back centuries. Using small Garra Rufa fish (a variety of carp with no teeth and approximately a finger’s length in size) dead skin is exfoliated from feet without harming the delicate, healthy skin layer beneath. There is no need to remove any clothing other than shoes and rolling up trousers - I opted for leggings, which I’d recommend. The treatment began with my feet being washed, to remove any traces of oil or lotions that might harm the fish. Perched upon a stool, I slowly lowered my feet into the pool, but couldn’t bring myself to watch as the fish explored my feet. Possibly not one for the squeamish, as the treatment initially feels like a light, slightly tickly massage. Having said that, I’m incredibly ticklish and I wasn’t phased by it. It certainly isn’t painful - the fish merely suck and nibble at the areas of dead skin, including cuticles in a mutually beneficial process. It is also believed that the fish secrete an enzyme that boosts skin’s regeneration. As I became acclimatised to the feeling, I found it relaxing and in fact, incredibly mesmerising to watch the fish nibble away at the dead skin. My therapist explained that although the treatment is currently only being offered for the feet, in Asia it is used anywhere on the body, including the face – and she showed me how enviably smooth her hands were from working with the pools. My feet were in the pool for approximately half an hour, and by the end I was impressed at how smooth my feet felt. The treatment is recommended once every few weeks and I’d agree with that - with regular sandal wearing in the summer, the results aren’t particularly long-lasting. The great thing in that the exfoliation is targeted - so unlike products, the fish will only remove the dead skin from the necessary areas and nowhere else. The treatment finished with a traditional, relaxing foot massage using oils to leave my feet feeling wonderfully conditioned.
The Results: Make no mistake, this is no normal pedicure and there’s no polish at the end. However, I’d definitely recommend this for anyone who enjoys trying something different or who prefers natural treatments.
Price: From £30 for 25 minutes.

Feature: FAMILY TREE (23.07.10)
This week, we keep it in the family by taking a closer look at the beauty brands run by teams of relations.
CHANTECAILLE
Luxury New York skincare and cosmetics brand, Chantecaille (available at www.spacenk.co.uk) is the brainchild of Sylvie Chantecaille - and the company is now run by the matriarch and her two daughters.
Sylvie has over 25 years of experience in the beauty industry, having developed a cosmetics line with Diane von Furstenberg in the 1970s and gone on to launch Prescriptives for Estee Lauder. She created Chantecaille in 1997, based on her knowledge of science, her love of botanical ingredients, and her innate understanding of what the modern woman desires. It is truly a family business – Sylvie is supported by her business-minded husband Olivier and their children; former model Olivia, who acts as Creative Director, and Alexandra, Director of Sales Promotion.
The range is expensive - so rather than experimenting, why not take your cue from the Chantecailles themselves when choosing which products to invest in? Sylvie Chantecaille swears by Biodynamic Lifting Cream, £255 for 50ml, whilst Olivia can’t live without Faux Cils Mascara, £31, to make the most of her eyes. Both mother and daughter adore Rosewater, £44 for 100ml, a hero product whatever your age, which tones and hydrates skin.
NAILGIRLS
Sisters, Lynda-Louise and Joanna Burrell founded the Islington based, nailgirls (www.nailgirls.co.uk) just over a year ago. Coming from different career backgrounds, the girls joined forces to launch their boutique nail spa and accompanying nail colour and care line, inspired by Lynda-Louise’s time spent working as a fashion stylist in New York where she’d regularly mix nail colours to create the required colour. Renowned for being the city of immaculate grooming, Lynda-Louise enjoyed 572 mani-pedis in New York, amounting to over 34,320 minutes of pampering, over the course of 11 years - which provided her with a wealth of knowledge regarding the perfect nail treatment. This creativity is combined with her sister’s business mind, following a career in recruitment.
Lynda-Louise explains, ““Owning a company with my sister is fantastic because we know each other so well. The great thing about forming nailgirls with my sister is that we both have very similar ideas about where we’d like nailgirls to develop. Although we are very different and bring different ideas and experiences to the table, our knowledge of each other means we are always on the same page... And the best thing about being sisters is that we can have an argument and it doesn’t really mean anything – two seconds later we’ll have forgotten all about it!”
Lynda-Louise clearly picked up a thing or two about the importance of good customer service whilst living in the US and with this in mind, each treatment can be specifically tailored to the individual needs of the customer – be it a purifying hand or foot mask or a hot stone massage add-on. The spa boasts a drying lounge and “spagarden” with plasma television, individual iPod shuffles, or noise cancelling headphones for those who are craving a temporary retreat. For a more upbeat experience, why not visit for a glass of bubbly with your girlfriends or sisters?
LUSH
Joined by a mutual love of nature, husband and wife team Mark and Mo Constantine have worked together for over 20 years. Lush was launched in 1995, breaking boundaries with their grocery inspired beauty displays to emphasise the freshness of the handmade cosmetics. To this day, they continue to be integral in the development of products, accompanied by their children; Simon, Head Buyer and Perfumer, Jack, Head of Design, and Claire, Retail Support.
With this lengthy working relationship, they are perfectly placed to offer advice to those couples considering balancing a business with romance. They explain the key to their success, “For us, it is the fact that we don’t work in the same area of the business- Mo heads up manufacturing and has very little to do with the shops and vice-versa. The company is big enough for us all to work in separate areas, only on certain things do we work together and then I do as I am told! I do think that marrying well is the secret to lots of peoples’ success too” and their top tip for couples who want to work together? “Never discuss work without your underwear on!”
Mark’s favourite products reflect his key inspirations. The suitably named Happy Hippy Shower Gel, £2.80 for 100g, made with uplifting pink grapefruit is the ideal choice for mornings and Handy Gurugu Hand Cream, £6.50 for 100g, the development of which involved the buying team travelling for over 15 hours to source Shea Butter from a women’s cooperative. Meanwhile Mo swears by one of the brand’s bestsellers, Ultrabland Cleansing Balm, £5.75 for 45g, which effectively remove all traces of makeup.
OMOROVICZA
Hungarian brand, Omorovicza (www.omorovicza.com) was developed by young couple Stephen and Margaret de Heinrich de Omorovicza, who met and live in Budapest. The city is renowned for its natural thermal baths, of which there are over 100. Their popularity dates back 2000 years to the Roman Empire when the “Spa City” was the choice destination of Emperors and even today, doctors prescribe a visit to the baths to help with a variety of ailments. The couple noticed the healing effects of the mineral-rich water on their own skin when they enjoyed thermal baths, so decided to conduct research into the dermalogical benefits of the waters. Omorovicza was born.
The range is based upon the patented “Mineral Cosmetology” system, which enables a potent blend of minerals to be delivered to the skin for optimal firming benefits.
Want to try the range? We love Thermal Cleansing Balm, £35 for 50ml, an effective starting point for your skincare regime. The black colour results from the calcium and magnesium-rich mud base, sourced from the bed of Lake Heviz, which helps to draw out impurities and deeply cleanse congested skin.
HE-SHI
Named after the mother and daughter team who created the Irish brand, self-tanning range he-shi (www.he-shi.co.uk) is a play on a combination of Hilary McMurray and her daughter Shelley’s names.
The range is relatively new to the UK market, yet is quickly gaining popularity. Celebrities such as Christine Bleakley have pledged their support and the industry has recognised the brand in awards ceremonies. Suitable for both men and women, the range includes face and body products, from £10.50, with clear step-by-step directions, as well as accessories and a professional range for those who prefer a salon tan. There are also one-day rinse-off tans, powder bronzers, and gradual tanning products for nervous beginners.
Hilary explains that, as with any business, there can be pros and cons: “Working in a family business provides a platform of trust and support to develop in a friendly environment, all working together with the commitment to achieve common goals. However, a family business has its own challenges in trying to separate personal issues and also curb constant talk of work out of office hours. Some larger competitors may view a family business as not being serious competition, while others prefer to work with family businesses in that they are very focused and will work tirelessly, going the extra mile to provide excellent customer service. We at 4Beauty (He-Shi’s holding company, of which Hilary is Managing Director) do hope the latter is true and I also have a personal view that all staff are part of this family.”
OSKIA
OSKIA (www.oskiaskincare.com) came to fruition in a truly family oriented way. Founder Georgie Cleeve’s father introduced the natural joint supplement MSM (Methyl Sulphonyl Methane) to the UK 15 years ago. When taking the supplement for a damaged knee, she was amazed at the improvement of her skin. Already interested in the health benefits of an organic diet and its effects upon the skin, she began a four-year research and development project, along with nutritionalists, scientists and skincare specialists, which would result in the founding of British brand OSKIA. Georgie is now joined by her husband, ex-lawyer George Gordon, in the running of the company.
OSKIA takes this nutritional and scientific approach with all of its products, opting for organic ingredients wherever possible, with at least 98% of all ingredients being natural. The aim of the range is to supply the skin with essential cell nutrients such as fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and proteins in the quest to prevent premature aging. In homage to her father’s successful supplement, each product in the range contains the patented MSM-Regen Complex, which boosts collagen and has rejuvenating properties.

The beauty industry has known for a while that bloggers should be taken seriously… Their readership, combined, has huge influence. But never before have we seen them grouping together to put pressure on a brand to withdraw something from the market. That happened on Sunday… The collection in question is Rodarte’s recent collaboration with MAC, inspired by the Mexican town of Juarez. The town is infamous for two things… Firstly, its factories (known as ‘maquiladoras’) and their underpaid, exhausted female workforce. Secondly - and most disturbingly - the shockingly high rate of violent female homicides, which mostly go unsolved. On Sunday night at 8pm, over 20 UK Beauty Blogs posted their own attacks on the collection – timed perfectly for Monday morning, when the beauty industry would be sitting down to their computers. By Monday evening, MAC had released a statement to say that the brand would be changing the names of the products (from grossly insensitive names like “Factory” and “Sleepwalker”) and that they would be donating $100,000 “to a non-profit organization that has a proven, successful track-record helping women.” Whether that is enough is debatable – but nobody can deny that it is the blogging community that made it happen. All power to the Beauty Blog – I predict there will be more where this came from… (For more information and a list of participating blogs, read British Beauty Blogger’s post by clicking here) http://www.britishbeautyblogger.com/2010/07/mac-rodarte-and-women-of-juaraz.html
Estee Lauder. I’ve just got around to testing Estee Lauder’s new Pure Colour Eyeshadows (£15.50) – and they have instantly earnt a permanent place in makeup bag. The shadows have impressive pigment, which looks as bright on lids as it does in the packing. They smooth onto lids smoothly and blend impressively easy. The vibrancy of colour is apparently down to an ingredient called ‘crystalline laminate polymer’ – it’s all greek to me, but the proof is down to the fact that the colour was still visible on my lids after ten hours of applying it. Impressive, non? www.esteelauder.co.uk
Jo Malone. If you struggle to wake up in the morning, I strongly recommend Jo Malone’s delectable Eucalyptus and Mint Frothing Cleansing Cream (£34). The fresh, uplifting scent never fails to wake me up when I’ve just dragged myself out of bed – whilst the smooth, silky formula feels rich and luxurious, leaving my skin soft, yet squeaky clean. I agree that it’s a high price to pay for cleanser – but the bottle is large and a little goes a very long way. For an indulgent start to your day, there are few better choices. www.jomalone.co.uk
Tisserand. Talking of early mornings… If you have a sore head from last night’s excesses, Tisserand’s Head Clear Roller Ball (£4.95) is surprisingly effective. The blend of white mint, lavender, lemon, and lime oil is welcome relief if your head is pounding and you are struggling to focus. I leave mine on my dressing table for difficult mornings and it’s always a joy to roll it over my wrists and inhale deeply. It contains only pure essential oils and represents great value for money. www.tisserand.com
Clinique. The entire Clinique Fall 2010 Colour Collection is irresistible (click here for full report http://www.the-beauty-pages.com/news02.php), but I have particulatly fallen for Clinique’s Brightening Black Limited Edition High Impact Mascara (£14.50). The formula is inky blue on the brush, but appears deep black on the lashes – but the clever bit is that is clinically proven to make eyes appear three times brighter, by creating a contrast against the whites of the eyes. I didn’t want to believe it, but it really does work – and lashes are long and lustrous. Available from 1st August at www.clinique.co.uk
Chapstick. OK, I admit it. I’m a Shrek fan. I watched the new film – Forever After – a fortnight ago in Dubai and it was one of the best yet. So when I was sent one of Chapstick’s newly launched Shrek Lipbalms (£1.19) it brought a smile to my face. It wasn’t just the graphics on the packaging either – but also the juicy apple fragrance and soothing, softening formula. It’s a small price to pay for smooth, supple lips. Boots Nationwide.
Blog: DR STEFANIE WILLIAMS – DERMATOLOGIST AND FOUNDER OF EUDELO BOUTIQUE – TELLS US WHY A GOOD SKINCARE IS OUR BEST LONG-TERM INVESTMENT (23.07.10)
When patients come to my clinic for cosmetic procedures, I look at three key issues - lines and wrinkles, loss of volume, and contour and problems with skin surface and texture. The first two areas can be addressed very effectively with minimal invasive procedures such as wrinkle-relaxing injections (Botox), plus hyaluronic acid fillers and volumisers. A wealth of research has shown that skin surface texture is every bit as important for younger, healthier looks. This is where skincare really can deliver great results and there’s no doubt in my mind that the right programme can also delay the need for procedures and even surgery. But here’s the problem. Not just any cream will do - and there’s a skincare jungle out there, which makes it virtually impossible for consumers to tell which products have been scientifically proven to work.
That’s why I have developed www.EudeloBoutique.com, which makes it easy to select a bespoke programme from the very best skincare available now. I’m passionate about skincare and feel strongly that everyone should be able to benefit from my expert knowledge as a dermatologist and cosmetic scientist. On my new website I give expert tips and advice on how to look after your specific skin type and offer a hand-picked choice of must-have products - all with a sound scientific background. I use many of them myself so can recommend them without hesitation. It’s my hope that this new website will change the way people look after their skin and help them to stop wasting cash on so-called luxury products that don’t deliver.
As a dermatologist, I can't stress strongly enough how crucial skincare is. Last weekend I spoke at the renowned FACE conference (Facial Aesthetics Conference and Exhibition) in London on the topic of pigmentation. Did you know that scientific studies have proved that those with an even skin tone are perceived as looking not only more attractive and youthful, but also more healthy? The right skincare can make a huge difference, especially from our 30s onwards when ‘skin sins’ start to show up more easily. But there’s no quick fix - we’re talking months to years, rather than days or weeks. Think of embarking on a good cosmeceutical skincare regime like joining the gym, then sticking with it – not just a few weeks intensive training, but a genuine and progressive change for the better. Believe me, it’s one long term investment that really does pay off.

Tried & Tested – SUMMER SHAMPOO (16.07.10)
This week, we’ve tested six shampoos that promise to cleanse, refresh, and repair locks during and after summer holidays.
JO MALONE LIME, BASIL AND MANDARIN SHAMPOO, £16 (www.jomalone.co.uk)
What they say: Reminiscent of the scent of limes carried on a Caribbean sea breeze, Lime Basil & Mandarin has become a modern classic for men and women. Fresh limes and zesty mandarins are undercut by peppery basil and aromatic white thyme in this alluring signature blend.
The Results: I adore Jo Malone – so being handed this shampoo to test was a real treat. Not only does it come in gorgeous packaging, with an easy-to-use pump action nozzle, it smells incredible too. Even my boyfriend commented on how delicious the bathroom smelt – and traces of the refreshing lime notes lingered on my hair all day, which was a big bonus. I have thin hair and I’m obsessed with adding volume, so using a non-volumising shampoo was a change for me. However, I didn’t need to worry as my hair felt uplifted from the roots to the tips. It’s expensive, but I will definitely be buying this again.
Best for: The gorgeous scent
COWSHED COWLICK SHINE SHAMPOO, £16 (www.cowshedonline.com)
What they say: This shampoo leaves your hair clean and silky. Essential oils of lavender and lemon revitalise and refresh, while richly moisturising carrot seed oil soothes the scalp.
The Results: I’ve never used Cowshed products before, but I’ve heard great things about the brand. Before testing this shampoo, I had just got back from two weeks in the South of France and my hair was not looking its best. It felt dry and was full of split ends. The shampoo doesn’t have much of a fragrance, but what it lacks in smell it makes up in moisturising. After using it every morning for a week, my hair felt nourished and I noticed a dramatic reduction in split ends. It’s not the cheapest bottle of shampoo – but for rescuing frazzled summer hair, I would highly recommend it.
Best for: Split ends
CRABTREE & EVELYN JOJOBA OIL SHAMPOO, £8 (www.crabtree-evelyn.co.uk)
What they say: The combination of Cactus flower, Yucca root, Aloe Vera, and Jojoba – the finest hydrating ingredients straight from the desert are your new solution for shiny, beautiful hair! The nourishing formulation is mild and yet unquestionably effective. Safe for everyday use, it will restore softness and shine to normal or colour-treated hair and will seal dry ends to help them lay flat.
The Results: I was really excited to read on the packaging that this shampoo was packed with natural ingredients and I couldn’t wait to use it. I had spent the last two weeks on a beach holiday and I liked the thought that everything in the shampoo was ‘straight from the desert.’ It didn’t disappoint – the shampoo easily foams and an amazing, refreshing fragrance. As soon as I dried my hair, I noticed that it looked healthy. It was so well conditioned, without a hint of frizz, that I didn’t need to straighten it – which is a first for me! For a luxury product, the price is amazing – a total bargain for gorgeous hair.
Best for: Nourishing hair
DERMALOGICA SHINE THERAPY SHAMPOO, £14.50 (0800 591818)
What they say: A uniquely therapeutic, daily-use shampoo that infuses hair with a brilliant shine. The naturally clarifying extracts of Quillaja Saponaria, Lemon and Tea Tree, combined with strengthening Panthenol, fortify all hair conditions from extra-fine to chemically treated.
The Results: I’ve used Dermalogica products on my skin for the last year, but I didn’t realise the brand also had a range of great shampoos – and this product really impressed me. The packaging is typically unfussy and I only needed a 10 pence sized amount to work up a good lather. After blow-drying, my hair looked far shinier than usual. After a week of regular use, my fly-away hair was much more manageable and looked really healthy. I’d definitely recommend this for after a holiday when your hair is at its weakest.
Best for: Shine
MICHAEL VAN CLARKE ‘3 MORE INCHES’ SHAMPOO, £27 (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they Say: This shampoo contains a unique complex of naturally derived cashmere proteins and amino acids, which mimic the molecular structure of hair and can plug gaps in a damaged hair shaft deep down to the core. It also helps hair to retain a protective moisture balance for strength and suppleness, slowing further disintegration.
The Results: After a three-month tour of Thailand, my hair was a disgrace. It snapped, looked frizzy all the time, and felt dry from the sunshine, sea-water and chlorine. It also seemed to refuse to grow and has been the same length since I went away. This shampoo felt soothing as it was massaging it into my scalp – and after just one use, my hair felt moisturised and soft. It’s worth investing in this killer shampoo. I’ve been using it for a month now and it has transformed my locks. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it starts to grow a little quicker now it’s back in good condition!
Best for: Emergency hair repair
MARK HILL HOLIDAY HAIR SUNCARE SHAMPOO, £3.99 (www.markhill.co.uk)
What they say: This lightweight shampoo gently removes salt, sand and chlorine residue, fully revitalizing sun-stressed hair. Perfect after a day by the pool or on the beach to cleanse away the day’s impurities.
The Results: I constantly worry about my hair when I’m on holiday – as a bleach blonde it can turn a worrying shade of green if I don’t look after it properly. I took this handy travel-sized shampoo on holiday - it is even small enough to be taken as hand luggage – and used it daily to get rid of all the chlorine in my hair. The bottle lasted for a whole week, with daily use. It had a zesty, uplifting scent and did a great job at softening and adding shine to my hair. My only gripe is that it didn’t boost the volume of my hair as well as my regular shampoo – but on holiday, I was wasn’t too worried and kept it looking loose and natural.
Best for: Best value
Treatment Review: RICHARD WARD IN-BLOOM BLOW-DRY, LONDON (16.07.10)
What it promises: Whether you are heading to a summer wedding, a day at the races, or a garden party with friends, London salon Richard Ward should be your first port of call this summer. The In-Bloom Blow Dry incorporates a relaxing personalised Kerastase treatment, followed by an expert blow-dry with a senior stylist, and then finished with a flattering flower accessory to create the ultimate summer blow-dry experience!
What happens: Richard Ward’s Hair and Metrospa is based in Duke of York Square, which is just off London’s fashionable Kings Road. The interior is bright and stylish, with clients waiting for appointments in what looks like a slick city bar. I ordered a glass of chilled water from the bar and flicked through the latest issue of Vogue while I waited for my Stylist. She arrived after just a few minutes and lead to the basins to enjoy a thorough shampoo, condition, intensive treatment, and head massage with luxurious Kerastase products. With a towel around my head, I was led back to the main salon and discussed with the stylist what look I was hoping for. I was heading to a wedding that afternoon, so asked for gentle waves, with lift in the crown. I was handed a selection of hair accessories to pick from – and chose a large purple flower grip, which matched the dress I was wearing later in the day. The blow-dry was impressively quick and exactly what I had envisaged, with the flower tucked in front of the grips on the left of my head.
The Results: To say I was pleased with the result is an understatement. I could never have achieved the same result at home and lost count of the compliments I received later in the day. The style held perfectly, with the waves still visible the following morning and throughout the day. The whole experience was enjoyable and very pampering. This blow-dry is the perfect start to a summer event and I have been recommending it to everybody.
Price: £60, plus the cost of your chosen hair accessory.
Location: Richard Ward, 82 Duke of York Square, Sloane Square, London SW3 4LY. 0207 7301222. www.richardward.co.uk
Editor’s Letter (16.07.10)
The weather might have been a tad unpredictable this week, but for me, it’s welcome relief… I’ve just spent 10 days in Dubai, with temperatures soaring to 48’C and 90 per cent humidity. Stepping outside the air-conditioned sanctuary of our flat felt like opening the door of a hot oven, with my sunglasses steaming up within seconds. I never went anywhere without my trusty survival kit – a large bottle of water, pressed mineral powder for blotting skin, and a bottle of cooling facial spray. The latter came in particularly useful on a 15-minute walk I decided to undertake to the nearest mall – in hindsight a mistake, as I felt like I’d just finished three-hours of Bikram Yoga as I entered the mall. It was nothing that a Starbucks frappucino couldn’t fix and on the way home, I played it safe with a taxi. I’m heading back next month, so will be keeping my eyes peeled for other get-cool-quick products. How do you keep cool in the heat? Let me know at editor@the-beauty-pages.com
White Ribbon Alliance. Every fashionista knows that one of this season’s biggest beauty trends is body art – so when I spotted hoards of celebrities at Glastonbury donning the same temporary tattoos, I was on a mission to find out what it was all about… It turns out that the artwork is down to the White Ribbon Alliance, who has created two tattoos – ‘Mother Lover’ and ‘Heart Mum’ (£3 each) – to raise awareness and money for their work they do to save mothers and newborns around the world. If they are good enough for trend setter Emma Watson, they are good enough for me. Buy yours online at http://www.whiteribbonalliance.org/index.cfm
ColourB4. Ever had a home hair dye disaster? I certainly have – which is why my ears pricked up when I heard about revolutionary new product ColourB4 (£9.99), which can remove the undesirable colour in a matter of minutes. The product works by shrinking the colourant molecules in the hair, which can then be washed away. It contains no bleach or ammonia and the after-treatment ‘buffer’ means that hair can be re-coloured immediately. Until now, the only option for reversing home-colouring mistakes was to head to the salon, paying up to £200 – so this product really is fantastic value for money. www.boots.com
Revlon. The latest mascara to go under the spotlight is Revlon’s Double Twist Mascaras (£6.99). The 2-in-1 brush has been designed “to combine lash-building properties of a traditional brush with the comb-through precision of a moulded brush.” To be honest, I didn’t notice a huge difference as I pulled it through my lashes – but I did notice that my flutter suddenly looked far more voluminous, without a single clump. If you like mascaras to be lengthening, this isn’t the one for you – I didn’t notice any increase in length – but if your lashes are sparse or particularly fine, I think you will love it. www.boots.com
Clinique. I have also got round to testing Clinique’s Eye Defining Liquid Liner (£11) this week, which is available in Dark Brown or Black. I’m not a big fan of felt-tip style liners, as I find they start to dry out within a few weeks of opening, so I was pleased to see that this liner consisted of a thin applicator, which dips into ink for each application. I found it tricky to use at first, blobbing too much onto my eyelids, but by the second and third try, I had mastered it. The line is fairly thick and dramatic, so best reserved for a night out – but I am ultra-impressed with how quick and easy it has made defining my eyes. www.clinique.co.uk
Clarins. I’m not very adventurous when it comes to concealer. I’ve been using the same brand for year – if it aint broke, why fix it? This week, however, Clarins’ Concealer Stick (£16) landed on my desk and I decided to try it for a day. Rebellious, I know. The texture surprised me – it was far creamier and easier to blend than my current brand and, shock horror, had better staying power too. I was ultra-impressed – my skin really did look smooth and flawless (believe me, that doesn’t usually happen). This is one product that is too good to miss out on. http://uk.clarins.com
Breaking News: CLINIQUE ANNOUNCE FALL 2010 COLOUR COLLECTION (16.07.10)
There’s no excuse for dull, safe eye makeup this autumn – as Clinique have announced their Fall 2010 Colour Trend and it promises to deliver ‘Bigger, Brighter Eyes in an instant’. The date to mark in your diary is 1st August, when the collection will hit Clinique counters nationwide.
We’ve had a sneak preview of the collection here at The-Beauty-Pages.com and can confirm that it is well worth splurging on. Our favourite product in the range is the Limited Edition High Impact Mascara (£14.50), which is available in Brightening Black. The inky blue colouring is clinically proven to make eyes appear three times brighter by creating a contrast against the whites of the eyes.
Other highlights include the Limited Edition Quickliner for Eyes Intense (£13) – particularly Intense Plum – a more dramatic version of the original Quickliner, which delivers more vivid colour. And Instant Lift for Brows – a dual-ended tool to groom lashes and create a more eye-opening, youtheful appearance.
Clinique’s Fall Colour Collection is available at counters nationwide, from 1st August.
Blog: CLARE ROGERS FROM THE TREATMENT ROOMS, GIVES SOME FASCINATING INSIGHTS INTO THE HEALTH OF OUR SKIN (16.07.10)
I’ve always had a great interest in skin care and love doing facials. I was an acne prone teenager and had some miserable years in adolescence due to poor advice and strong medical treatments. Our GP even advised my mother to cut my hair off!
Whether adolescent or adult, skin problems can be very upsetting and painful - and when its our own face affected, we feel so exposed and vulnerable.
The skin is our largest organ of elimination and it’s bound to reflect what’s going on in our bodies, both hormonally and nutritionally. When we start to get pimples, rashes or dry spots it can often indicate that something isn’t right and it’s important to pay attention to these small changes. Not checking what the problem is and treating it immediately can lead to the development of a more deeply rooted issue. Left untreated , the skin condition can require a course of antibiotics, which can be very disruptive and damaging to digestive health and also, in extreme cases, lead to respiratory problems. The colon and lungs are also organs of elimination and if the skin isn’t functioning correctly then it inevitably puts more pressure on the other organs.
Deterioration in skin condition usually reflects a change in lifestyle, such as few late nights, poor diet, poor health or stress. It is so important to get as much sleep as you need, for the skin to heal and repair itself effectually, the optimum hours being between 10pm and midnight. Also, sleeping for longer in the morning doesn’t help - no wonder teenagers have skin problems, on top of hormonal imbalances - they go to bed late and sleep in until lunch!
Water helps keep everything fluid and moving through the body. Eight glasses of still water, per day is a guide. More is needed if you are very active and in hot weather and always have no cooler than room temperature and avoid ice - if drinks are too cold, the body has to warm the fluid until its beneficial. Avoid carbonated drinks in general, especially diet drinks (which are more likely to be full of chemical sweeteners) and caffeine should be moderated as well.
If you have skin complaints, nutritionally it’s best to avoid ‘sticky’ foods, which can congest the skin and colon. Classically cheese, bananas, yoghurt, pasta, bread are all a no. Try apples and pears, rice and beans. The ‘sticky’ foods can be reintroduced in moderation for a balanced diet and Supplements can also be included, vit C and zinc for acne skins and vit C and E for dry skins.
Hormones do play a great part in our skin condition and puberty, pregnancy and menopause are unlikely to go by without some changes in our skin, which is entirely normal. There can be other hormonal related conditions such as polycystic ovaries. Stress really can manifest itself in the skin and when under stress we produce more adrenalin, too. Our lifestyles are more stressful these days but we don’t think we are under stress because it’s the norm! If you know you are following a healthy lifestyle then do seek further advice from an expert if your condition isn’t improving.
Most of my views are from my studies of the fundamentals and concepts of Ayurveda. A simple rule is ‘like increases like’.
So if your skin is looking red and is hot? Avoid red foods and drinks, and spicy foods.
Dry, flaky skin? Avoid the dry foods like toast, crisps and biscuits. Take more fluid and wet food.
Your skin will go through seasonal changes, with the spring and autumn being the most likely months for you to notice minor changes. It’s following nature and just preparing for the next season. This is the optimum time to have a facial. Removal of dead skin will allow any blemishes to heal more quickly and the hydration from massage will keep away the flaky patches.
Feature: CHILD’S PLAY (16.07.10)
Splashing out on skincare, haircare and bath products for your children might seem like a step too far – until you release you can use them yourself! Check out our baby and kid’s ranges that are perfect for mum, too.
HAIRCARE
If you’re eyeing your little one’s shampoo with envy – just start using it! A lot of today’s formulas are gentle, which makes them great for daily hair washing. And not only that, they tend to have impressive organic credentials – and be easy on the purse, too. Check out these children’s haircare treats – as it’s not just the shampoos that are worth stealing.
Tantrum was created by the London children’s hair salon of the same name. The range originated when staff asked customers what they did and didn’t like about their current shampoos and conditioners. In fact, the packaging features the (very cute) kids themselves. My Clever Coconut Shampoo, £3 (www.yourtantrum.com) is great for you and any nippers in the house. It’s noticeably sting-free around the eyes, gives a good lather, and is allergen and paraben-free. The rest of the range looks gorgeous, too.
Goody makes an extensive range of hair accessories, brushes and combs that are perfect for mums and kids of all ages. Hairbands and slides for your little daughter or niece are just as pretty on you in this season’s pastel shades. And the best find from this collection? The Ouchless Detangle Comb, £3.49 (www.boots.com), which sorts out toddler tangles with no tantrums, and then helps you comb your conditioner through with ease, thanks to its wide-toothed design.
Another tangle-beater that’s perfect for mums as well as kids is Paul Mitchell’s Taming Spray, £5.95 (www.lookfantastic.com). A leave-in, detangling conditioner, it takes away the need for another unwelcome rinse in the bath for your kids, and provides easy detangling on dry or damp hair. It’s perfect to use on ‘bed-heads’ in the morning too. So why should mum miss out? A spritz on your locks will freshen up a style and leave you smelling gorgeous.
BATH & SHOWER
Bath-time products for babies and kids tend to mean soothing, gentle formulas with calming scents and nurturing ingredients. So what’s stopping us using them? Grown-ups need to feel calm too! Check out some of the kids’ shower products as well...
It’s every mum’s dream – a baby that sleeps through the night! With this in mind, Little Me Organics created the Shhh Sleepy Head range of products, which are blended with dill and organic lavender to help baby – and you – relax and drift off to sleep. Little Me Organics Hair and Body Wash, £3.99 (www.boots.com) is formulated to nurture and pamper delicate skin and contains certified organic ingredients and the purest essential oils. It’s also paraben and SLS free, and dermatologically tested.

You can choose from Organic Chamomile, Organic Lavender or Organic Mandarin. And the best bit? They’ll leave both you and baby smelling sweet.
The French organic brand Melvita has a new baby care range – good news for anyone with kids who has already fallen for their fabulous adult collections. All their baby products use organic ingredients, are formulated under paediatric control and tested to be hypoallergenic without the use of essential oils or alcohol. The Changing Cream, £11 (http://uk.melvita.com) contains calendula, cotton and olive and is fabulous – but not much use to Mum. Instead, steal the Shower Shampoo £12 (http://uk.melvita.com), which smells of honey and oranges and will make you skin as smooth as your baby’s bottom.
BODYCARE
Run out of your favourite body lotion? You could do a lot worse than pinching your little one’s off the bathroom shelf. The fresh scents are delicious to wear, especially in summer – and the soothing formulas are unlikely to irritate. Go on, slather some on...
You might have heard of Method if you shop at Waitrose, Sainsbury’s or Tesco's – they also make cleaning products, hand washes, and bath products: all based on the same ecologically sound, non-toxic ingredients. The baby range includes a Squeaky Green Body Lotion, £5 (www.biggreensmile.com), which smells divine thanks to natural extracts of rice milk and mallow. The Hair & Body Wash is also worth investigating, as it comes with a handy rinser lid. And Method list the ingredients of their products on their website which is impressive – and useful if you’re dealing with an allergy.
Daniel Galvin Junior – or DGJ – has a superb Organic Baby Care range, ‘formulated using only the mildest, organic and natural cleansing and moisturising agents with plant and sugar extracts and essential oils to look after your baby’s skin’. Smooth on the fabulously mild Lavender Body Moisturiser, £3.99 (www.danielgalvinjnr.co.uk), which helps calm restlessness and soothe problem skin, open wounds or insect bites. Perfect for you and the little one to share on holidays.

One of the UK’s best-loved baby brands has to be Sudocrem. The wonder-formulation that has soothed millions of babies bottoms since its original launch 80 years ago is also used by mums the world over to treats spots, blemishes, sunburn, grazes, and dry skin. Amanda Holden describes Sudocrem as her “beauty bargain for killing spots — if you’re a mum there’s always a tub in the house.” The great news is that the brand has now launched a new handy 30g tube, £1.89 (www.boots.com), aimed specifically at grown-ups. The formula still soothes irritations in the same way by forming a barrier to keep moisture in and damaging pollutants out. Only now, it’s in a handbag-friendly size, and is super-cheap too.
It’s also worth treating the family to Medicleanse Pure Essence, £9.95 (www.biolife-international.co.uk) is a pocket-sized spray that’s ideal for the treatment of cuts, grazes, spots and is even a natural insect repellent. Medicleanse is perfect for the whole family and was formulated by a biologist and a pharmaceutical chemist who are both passionate about natural ingredients – and is in fact the only therapeutic skin and haircare range in the country that actually qualifies for the Allergy UK "Chemical Friendly Award".

Try the Spritzer, £15.00 (www.angeliqueproducts.co.uk), which contains a unique blend of seven specific aromatic essential oils, and is not only ideal as a refreshing spray to use during pregnancy and labour, it doubles as a room spray for your baby’s nursery because the essential oils help induce sleep. A brilliant idea.

TRIED & TESTED: BODY GLOSSES (09.07.10)
This week we’ve tested six body glosses that promise to highlight sun-kissed skin.
MATIS REPONSE SOLEIL MAGNIFYING GEL, £22.50 for 125ml (www.matis-uk.com)
What they say: Reponse Soleil Magnifying Gel contains a cocktail of moisturising active and ingredients and sparkling copper and gold pigments. A holiday must-have, this tan enhancing gel gives a beautiful golden tint to the skin leaving it soft, hydrated and glowing.
The Results: I’ve never tried Matis products before, but I really enjoyed using this product. The handy tube made it easy to apply without mess – and although I was initially surprised at the bright yellow shade of the cream, it blended beautifully into my skin and added a grown-up, golden shimmer without looking brassy. It feels lightweight and silky, making it ideal for use on balmy summer evenings and has impressive staying power. My favourite way to use this cream, however, was to mix it with my body oil and apply to legs for an instant confidence boost when wearing shorts.
Best for: Grown-up shimmer
THE BODY SHOP BODY AND LEG SHINE, £10 for 55g (www.thebodyshop.co.uk)
What they say: Enhance your summer tan or transform untanned skin with an instant touch of gorgeous glimmering radiance. Contains golden shimmering pearls to give a glamorous and healthy-looking sun-kissed glow.
The Results: I’ve never used a shimmer stick before and imagined that it would give streaky, unnatural results – but I was pleasantly surprised at how easy to apply and control this was. Presented in a stick, similar to a deodorant yet far more glamorous, my favourite aspect was that it is lightweight and slimline, so ideal for taking on holiday! I was sent shade 02 for ‘Medium to Dark Skin’ and was worried when I opened the stick that the colour looked very dark. On application, I was relieved to discover that it is very sheer when applied and gave my skin just a hint of colour. It’s best suited to highlighting key areas, such as legs and collarbones. The particles of glitter are small and grown-up and although it had disappeared after a few hours, it would certainly give sufficiently lasting results for evening drinks or dinner.
Best for: Ease of use
ST. TROPEZ SKIN ILLUMINATOR, £15 for 30ml (www.st-tropez.com)
What they say: After creating a buzz at London Fashion Week for its luminous and reflective quality, Skin Illuminator has arrived just in time for the season. Finishing the skin with a gorgeous iridescent blue sheen, it can be worn alone or to complement a tan. Handbag sized so you can glow on the go.
The Results: I’ve always been proud of my alabaster skin and use SPF every day, preferring to embrace the pale and interesting look! However, this product proves that you can have both pale skin and a healthy glow. This is a gloss as opposed to a shimmer, with a mysterious ultra-violent tint, which I liked as it seems more mature than a glitter-based product. The texture is thick and creamy, so you don’t need to use much and it has the added benefit of hydrating skin. The tube makes it easy to control how much is dispensed. It is expensive for such a small tube but given that it is best for pale skin, it can be used year round.
Best for: Highlighting pale skin
LIZ EARLE SHEER GOLD BODY SHIMMER, £8.75 for 50ml (www.lizearle.com)
What they say: This light, refreshingly-scented rehydrating gel contains a luxurious botanical blend of essential oils with organic aloe vera and natural-source vitamin E, together with a soft shimmer to illuminate your skin.
The Results: I associate Liz Earle with natural, plant-based skincare and had no idea that the brand made products like this body shimmer – but I was more than willing to give it a go! The product has a gel formula and the luxurious scent of essential oils. I loved the smooth, lightweight texture as it meant the gel could be applied to face or body. There are lots of small, glitter particles are small, which give skin an intense hit of shimmer – so I would definitely recommend using sparingly or applying solely to areas you want to highlight. The level of shimmer makes it best suited to summer – and the convenient 50ml size means you can pack it into hand luggage for holidays, which is a big bonus.
Best for: Travel
RIOBLUSH CITY GIRL FIRMING LEG SHIMMER, £40 for 200ml (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What they say: Created by Kyra Panchenko, an award winning Hollywood makeup artist, the distinctive RioBlush City Girl Firming Leg Shimmer combines body sculpting and slimming properties with a beautiful shimmer and natural tint that is perfect for legs and body.
The Results: I was excited to be handed this product, as I had heard that it was originally developed on the film set of Sex & The City. The product is pricey, but a little goes a long way and the tube is a generously sized. The thick cream has a tint, so it may not be best suited to those with very pale skin. Luckily for this trial, I have naturally dark skin and the product highlighted my skin beautifully. I only tested the cream for a few weeks and my skin doesn't feel any firmer – but on the plus side, I did notice that the tint and shimmer gave the illusion of slimmer legs, so that was a big bonus! My favourite thing about this product was the scent - it’s an incredibly summery, feminine fragrance.
Best for: Luxury purchase
MAC STROBE CREAM, £21 for 50ml (www.maccosmetics.co.uk)
What they say: The ultimate quick-fix for the skin. Super-powered with potent botanicals; de-snoozes, de-stresses, moistens, freshens and boosts the look of dull, flat or tired-looking skin with a fully loaded vitamin zap and a mega dose of green tea. Brightens and clarifies with iridescent particles and antioxidants. Enhances the effects of light on all skin and in all lighting conditions from sunlight to spotlight.
The Results: I’m a big fan of MAC, so I was excited to get my hands on this cream. As with all their products, the packaging is minimalist, chic and functional. I tested this cream while preparing for a night out with a friend and it suited both our skin tones, which are dark and pale. Our skin suddenly had a lovely, healthy glow. We loved that it can be used on the body as well as the face and in fact – and ended up applying it to our skin again the morning-after to freshen up our hungover skin! It has earned a place in my makeup bag and I can definitely see why it’s one of MAC’s most popular products!
Best for: Multi-use
Spa Treatment: DEEP TISSUE FULL BODY MASSAGE, NOUGAT LONDON SPA (09.07.10)
What it promises: Nougat London’s Full Body Massage is one of the most indulgent way to relieve muscle tension. Using firm strokes and deliciously-scented essential oils, the massage helps to improve circulation, reduce anxiety, relieve muscle cramps, and reduce toxin build up to aid muscle healing. You will leave the spa feeling relaxed, revived and revitalised.
What happens: I suffer from tension in my back, shoulders, and neck, but going for a Deep Tissue Massage has never appealed to me. The words conjure up images of sports clinics, with sterile white rooms and the scent of Deep Heat – so I was a bit apprehensive before arriving at Nougat Spa to test this treatment. When I arrived, however, I knew I’d discovered my new spiritual home. Everything appealed to me – from the flickering candles, the luxurious scent of essential oils, the coffee walls and chocolate-brown fluffy towels, and serene music playing in the treatment room. The therapist used strong, deep strokes to knead away tension – and whilst this was sometimes a little uncomfortable, I was content in the knowledge that it was healing aches and pains. I got used to the pressure and after a while, was so comfortable that I dozed off half way through the treatment! The therapist worked on my back first, then moved onto my shoulders, back of legs, and feet. She then asked me to turn over, before moving onto the front of my legs, arms, and finally, hands. At the end of the treatment, she woke me up gently with a glass of water. Initially, I felt quite sleepy - but within minutes I felt a wave of energy flooding into my body and I was back on the streets of Westbourne Grove with a spring in my step.
Results: I had been suffering from tight, aching muscles for a few months before this treatment – but in the days that followed the massage, I was astonished to discover that the tweaks in my neck and shoulders had completely disappeared. I was a bit sceptical at first, expecting them to return within a few days, but it is now a month later and I’m still free of aches-and-pains. I would wholeheartedly recommend this treatment – it’s definitely the most appealing and indulgent way to give your body a MOT! I will be back!
Price: £75 for 60 minutes.

Feature: NEW BEAUTY INNOVATIONS (09.07.10)
From perfumed bubbles to teeth-whitening lipsticks, we’ve found six of the most exciting new innovations in beauty – and asked six readers to report back on their efficiency.
BOOTS SMOOTH SKIN, £324.99 (www.boots.com)
What is it? Boots Smooth Skin is a convenient home-use device for permanent reduction of unwanted face and body hair. It’s quick too – taking only 10 minutes to treat the bikini line or underarm and up to an hour for legs. For best results, the company advise using it for 6 to 12 treatments.
How does it work? Smooth Skin uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology - the most advanced form of light-based therapy for hair removal and reduction. The technology was discovered by accident, when in 1979 a scientist called Professor Clement ran his arm accidently under a laser beam and noticed that the hair no longer grew in the exposed area. He went onto create the world’s first hair removal lasers. And now – with the launch of Boots Smooth Skin – we can benefit from his discovery at home.
Can everybody use it? No, unfortunately not. Boots Smooth Skin is unsuitable for use on darker skin tones. Furthermore, it can’t be used on skin that has been fake or naturally tanned in the last 30 days. Check your skin suitability at http://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Smooth-Skin/ before you buy.
What did our tester think? We gave Boots Smooth Skin to Briony, 35 to test. Here’s what she thought:
“I’ve used Boots Smooth Skin on my underarms once a week for six weeks - and I find it so easy to use. It literally takes me five minutes from start to finish. I started to notice results pretty much straight away, but the real turning point was after the fourth treatment. I used to shave every day, as my hair is thick and coarse – but by the fourth week, I wasn't shaving until my next treatment. I am now six weeks into the course and I focus on the small areas that are more stubborn, but I am pretty much hair-free. I will continue to use it for 12 weeks to make sure the hair doesn't grow back and will start on my bikini line next.”
RAPIDLASH EYELASH ENHANCING SERUM, £39.99 (www.boots.com)
What is it? This serum promises to extend lash length by 50% in just eight weeks, whilst improving the overall condition of lashes and brows. It’s incredibly easy to use – just paint it across your upper and lower lash line (like liquid eye liner) every night before bed. The serum has just gone online at Boots.com, after attracting a waiting list of over 800 people in the lead-up to its launch.
How does it work? RapidLash contains a clever blend of lash-boosting ingredients, including: Amino Acids, Fatty Acids, Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamins, Provitamins, Panthothenic Acid, and Plant extracts. The ingredients help to amplify length, thickness and volume, prevent breakage, promote cell regeneration, boost lash flexibility, and help to soothe and brighten the lash line.
Can everybody use it? RapidLash isn’t suitable if you are wearing eyelash extensions – but it’s perfect for use in between applications, as it helps to strengthen and prevent breakage of your natural lashes.
What did our tester think? We gave RapidLash to Rebecca, 26, to test. Here’s what she thought:
“I’ve been using RapidLash for four months now. I leave the tube on my bedtime table so that I remember to apply it every night before I got to sleep. It feels a bit damp to begin with, a little like liquid liner, but dries really quickly. It took 10 weeks for me to start to see results and after 12 weeks, my lashes looked much, much longer. I would estimate they are about a third longer – I’m still using it and I think they’re getting longer by the day! It’s amazing how much fun it is to curl my eyelashes now and apply mascara! It’s quite pricey at £39.99, but my tube has lasted over four months and still counting!”
SCHOLL HYDRASTEP SANDALS, £24.99 (www.scholl.com)
What are they? Scholl’s HydraStep sandals contain a special moisturising gel in the sole to hydrate and soften feet as you wear them. The brand recommends that you wear the sandals for 1-2 hours a day to appreciate the benefits, with the gel lasting for at least five months.
How do they work? As you walk, the moisturising gel is slowly released through the bamboo charcoal texture insole. The delicately-scented gel contains a blend of moisture-boosting natural emolients and vitamin E. The sandals boast an anatomically shaped footbed and anti-slip sole.
Can everbody use them? Yes, as long as your feet are sized between a UK 4 and 8. The sandals are available in 4/5, 6/6.5 and 7/8.
What did our tester think? We gave the sandals to Jane, 42, to test. Here’s what she thought:
“The first thing I noticed was how comfortable the sandals were – it felt like I was bouncing as I was walking! I was expecting my feet to feel moisturised and soft after the first use (I actually imagined them feeling a little damp with the gel), but I must confess that I didn’t notice anything until the third or fourth wear. The difference is subtle – my feet feel softer, with a visibly smoother surface, but you need to wear them regularly, for at least two hours a day, to maintain the result. I’ve been wearing them as slippers while I’m at home – the straps tend to rub on the top of my foot if I wear them for long periods of time so I wouldn’t wear them out for a whole day. Overall I’m impressed – it’s much easier and less time consuming that exfoliating and moisturising my feet throughout summer.”
MAISON FRANCIS KURKDIJIAN PARIS BUBBLE COLLECTION, £15 each (0207 7341234)
What are they? As a fun way to introduce children to the pleasure of fragrance, renowned perfumer Francis Kurkdijian – the man behind iconic fragrances Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male and Elizabeth Arden Green Tea, to name just a few – has created the Bubble Collection. There are four scents to choose from: Pear, Cold Mint, Cut Herbs, and (new launch) Violet.
How do they work? The products work in the same way as a traditional bottle of bubbles, yet release delicious scents when the bubbles pop. Simply take the wand from the bottle and blow a stream of bubbles. Then pop as many bubbles as possible with the tip of your nose. As they pop, the air is filled with delicious fragrance.
Can anybody use them? The bubbles are specifically aimed at children, but adults will find them just as irresistible…
What did our tester think? We gave the bottle to Claire, 35, and her daughter Emily, 5, to test. Here’s what they thought.
“I thought the idea was fun, but at £15 a bottle, these are expensive bubbles! After having a go myself (possibly the most enjoyable five minutes of my week!) I reluctantly handed over the bottle of my five year-old daughter Emily. She enjoyed blowing the bubbles and giggled as she tried to pop them with her nose. We had the Violet-scented bubbles and as she popped them, we discussed the smell. She said it reminded her of sweets and bath time! After the initial excitement, I limited her to three bubble-blows every day (otherwise the bottle would be gone in five minutes!) and she looks forward to it after her dinner. It’s a lovely way to introduce children to fragrance and I would consider investing in a different scent for an extra birthday present or stocking filler.”
CLINIQUE LIP COLLECTION FOR A BRIGHTER SMILE, £14.50 (www.clinique.co.uk)
What are they? Clinique has developed a range of lipsticks that make teeth appear instantly whiter. It isn’t just a trick of the mind, either – during clinical testing, dentists confirmed that each smile was at least one shade brighter using the Dentsply’s Esthet-X® Shade Guide. The collection contains eleven shades – each already a Clinique favourite – in a selection of textures, from pearls to buttery shines.
How do they work? On application, the cleverly developed lip colours create a contrast that brightens your smile, with the help of subtle blue tones. There’s no quicker way to brighten your teeth.
Can anybody use them? Yes – the lipsticks are Allergy Tested and 100% Fragrance Free.
What did our tester think? We gave Clinique Surge Butter Shine Lipstick in Pink-a-Boo (Pink) to Laura, 32, to test. Here’s what she thought:
“I was a bit sceptical before testing this lipstick – it looked like a flattering shade, but I didn’t believe it would whiten my teeth. Before applying it, I studied my teeth in the mirror so I could remember the original shade. After I’d smoothed it over my lips, I looked in the mirror again – and I was surprised to see an obviously brighter set of teeth smiling back. However, I convinced myself that I must have been imagining it, so I tested it again the following day in front of a friend. She was so shocked by the change that she actually squealed when I applied it! The lipstick gives a definite result and now I’ve discovered it, I want to own all the other shades!”
CLARISONIC, from £150 (www.spacenk.co.uk)
What is it? Clarisonic is an innovative skincare brush for cleansing, which is powered by sonic technology. With brushes for face and body, it helps to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and visible pores. Owned by top beauty editors and celebrities worldwide, Clarisonic has made serious waves in the beauty industry since it was launched in 2009.
How does it work? Developed by the lead inventor of the Sonicare Sonic Toothbrush, Clarisonic has a frequency of over 300 movements per second to cleanse skin twice as effectively as manual cleansing. After use, creams and serums are able to absorb and work more effectively.
Can anybody use it? Yes – it has three speed settings, so even those with the most sensitive or fragile skin can use it. It works equally well for dry or greasy skin – and clears blemishes as effectively as it smoothes rough, flaky skin.
What did our tester think? We gave the Clarisonic Plus to Jess, 37, to test. Here’s what she thought:
“At first, I was a bit daunted by Clarisonic – but after a quick read of the instruction manual, I was ready to start. I quickly discovered that it was easy to use – you simply wet your face, smooth cleanser over skin, and then switch it on. As it whizzes away, you gently work it over skin in circular movements, starting with the chin, then moving onto the nose, forehead, and each cheek. It tickles a bit on the nose, but otherwise feels lovely to use – a bit like a mini massage. Afterwards my skin felt very smooth and clean - but I started to notice real results after two weeks of use. My skin looks healthier and I’m convinced that the fine lines around my eyes and mouth are less obvious. My cheeks have a radiant glow and I’ve even gone without makeup a few times – something I very rarely do!”
Blog: CELEBRITY MAKEUP ARTIST LINA CAMERON TELLS US HOW SHE CREATED A RED CARPET LOOK FOR SADIE FROST (09.07.10)
I’d like to take this opportunity to formerly introduce myself. My name is Lina Cameron and I’m a celebrity Makeup Artist. I’ve been in the business of using cosmetics to enhance looks for more than a decade. My expertise and skill has seen me work with film, stage and music greats. Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller and Prince – to name but a few! And it has been so exciting for me to travel the world meeting these amazing faces!
My most recent celebrity collaboration has been with the beautiful Sadie Frost – actress, DJ, and fashion designer. Sadie has been announced as one of the designers for the hot new Camden based fashion label Louie Louie – and the brand recently opened its doors to a plethora of London’s finest as it hosted a fabulous launch party. Sadie’s designs for the Louie Loves Camden range, embrace all that is sexy, sassy and sophisticated. Always Camden – just slightly more grown up.
On the launch night, Sadie welcomed me into her home, ready to be groomed to perfection. She made it clear that she wanted “a no makeup makeup look.” During conversation, she told me that her idea of a beautiful woman would be “a Russian ballerina”. Natural. Simple.
Within a few minutes of meeting each other, I could tell that Sadie has a calm and relaxed nature and that her makeup reflected this. Taking this into consideration, I decided to create a contrast between her chosen charcoal-coloured dress she had chosen to wear. I opted for natural and golden shades. She has such beautiful skin and expressive eyes; I wanted her to look luminous and iridescent. My aim was to make her glow.
Key products used to create the Sadie look were:
Eyes: Trish McEvoy Eye Base (in Fair). It’s a fantastic product that makes eyeshadow last all day. It was perfect for this occasion as it gives a perfect matte finish Sadie wanted
Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Pressed Powder in Pale Yellow was then applied to set the colour. Sadie has beautiful aqua coloured eyes. I used Guerlain Terracotta Light Bronzante (02 brunettes hale) to add colour. This pallet is multi-coloured, so I mixed the beige and coral shades and blended them into the eye crease. This technique is what made her eyes "pop"!
Sadie was adamant that false lashes were not needed. So in order to provide the volume needed, I first curled the lashes with Shu Umemura Curlers and then used Estee Lauder Sumptuous Waterproof Mascara.
Face: Remembering that the overall look we were aiming to achieve was light and fresh, I kept the use of foundation to a minimum. By mixing Chanel Vitalumiere no.32 with Dior Nude Glow 001 Skin Enhancer, she really glowed. Bobbi Brown Corrector in Light Bisque and By terry Touch Veloutee No.2 was used to correct the slight under eye shadow. And to finish Bobbi Brown shimmer brick - (bronze) was applied to the cheekbones.
Lips: Sadie used her own lipstick on the night – a very natural nude colour. Too give her lips a little more definition I outlined them with first Benefit - Cupid's Bow Light Reflecting Pencil and then with Bobbi brown Petal Lip Liner.
The whole Sadie Frost makeover took no more than 30 minutes. When the moment arrived, Sadie walked the leopard print carpet, posed for the paparazzi and worked a look that has since been aptly named Rock ‘n’ Roll sexy chic.
While the flashing light bulbs of paparazzi, flowing champagne and glitterati are fun on occasion, I feel that I should make it clear, that and it is not the celebrity client list that defines the credibility of my work. I have collaborated with people from all walks of life and know that it is the combination of results and word of mouth recommendations that speak volumes.

Editor’s Letter (09.07.10)
I’ve always preferred wearing bright colours on my fingernails. Neon pinks, pillar-box reds, and vibrant corals have been a regular feature of my wave. But now, all of a sudden, I can’t get enough of neutral pinks and beiges. Bloggers are referring to the trend as ‘Mannequin Hands’ – which isn’t the most flattering term, but sums it up pretty well. The trick is to match your nails to the colour of your fingers – an effect that is subtle and pretty, but also gives the illusion of longer, leaner hands and fingers. My favourite is Leighton Denny’s ‘In the Buff’. It’s the creamy, flattering shade of pale beige that I first fell for – but I must admit that the quirky name makes it all the more appealing. It was a limited edition colour from 2008, but is still available on www.beautique.com, so I am currently stocking up. Are you rocking the ‘Mannequin Hands’ trend – or still preferring things a little brighter? Let me know at editor@the-beauty-pages.com
NARS. Throughout his career, NARS founder and Creative Director Francçois Nars has been inspired by iconic beauties whom, whom he describes as “larger than life, unforgettable and posses and elegance that’s timeless.” There are few people that fit that description better than new leading lady Daphne Guinness, who is fronting the NARS Fall 2010 campaign. I absolutely adore this campaign shot of Daphne – and if I saw splashed in a magazine or hung provocatively behind a NARS counter, it would certainly convince me to part with my hard-earned pennies in return for that drop-dead-gorgeous Rouge Basque Lipstick (£17) or Daphne Eyeshadow (£16). Bring on Autumn/Winter… NARS Counters Nationwide.
Supergoop. I was invited to a day at the races recently, accompanied by a lovely group of other online beauty journalists and bloggers. The sun shone and - shock horror – I discovered that I was one of the only girls with sun protection in my bag (being so pale, I rarely go anywhere without it). I pulled out a pack of Supergoop Travel-Swipes SPF30 (£10) and handed them round. The pocket-sized pack contained eight sunscreen wipes, ready to apply to visible skin. They got a thumbs-up from the other girls – and I would definitely recommend keeping a pack in your bag for similar emergencies. The pack is so small and light that you’ll hardly notice you’re carrying them. www.spacenk.co.uk
Help: Clear Skin. As so many adults can testify, acne is not just a teenage condition. If you still suffer from acne or breakouts, you may want to get your hands on help: clear skin’s new Works with Water Nutraceuticals (from £14.79). Simply add a sachet to your favourite drink or soft drink twice a day, for a minimum of six weeks, and the brand promise that you’ll dramatic improvements to your skin. I haven’t tested it – but I love the fact that it contains 100% natural ingredients, including industry-rated Praventin that has been proven to help clear up acne. It’s well worth a try. www.workswithwater.co.uk
Pupa. Breast Enhancers have become a bit of a beauty trend lately – maybe it’s a backlash against cosmetic surgery, as there seems to be more non-evasive options available these days than those on the surgeon’s table. The latest offering is from Italian brand Pupa. The Multivitamin AEF Breast Enhancer Intensive Treatment (£47) promises to help you achieve naturally fuller, firmer, more toned breasts in just eight weeks. This is a brand that I rate and trust – so it would be well worth a try. www.beautique.com
Boots. It’s one of those boring, everyday essentials, but we all need a good bottle of nail polish remover. This week, I discovered Boots Expert Conditioning Polish Remover (£1.25) and was astonished by how quickly and easily it removed the chipped polish on my nails. Literally one swipe, with hardly any pressure, and it was gone. Better still, my nails felt conditioned and moisturised – when usually they feel dry and fragile immediately after removing polish. Next time you need a bottle of remover, make sure you get this. www.boots.com
TRIED & TESTED: COOLING FACIAL SPRAYS (02.07.10)
Cool down this summer with a refreshing, hydrating, and soothing facial spray. We’ve put six to the test…
CLINIQUE MOISTURE SURGE FACE SPRAY, £18 for 125ml (www.clinique.co.uk)
What they say: Water your skin. Take along a refreshing face spray for showers of thirsty skin relief. Bursting with moisture and active aloe. But not a drop of oil. Rapidly replenishes skin's moisture level, restoring balance. Softens and soothes in a flash.
The Results: My skin is quite dry and – dare I say it – quite mature. It feels tight after cleansing and I rely on thick, intensive moisturisers to retain a feeling of suppleness. I liked this spray as it was very versatile – it could be sprayed over or underneath moisturiser at any time of the day to refresh skin. I used it immediately after cleansing and my skin felt instantly hydrated and more comfortable. I liked the feeling so much that I threw it into my handbag for using throughout the day. The bottle is quite heavy, so I probably wouldn’t do this on a daily basis, but I’d definitely take it with me on the hottest, sweatiest days of the year.
Best for: Soothing tight, dry skin
CRYSTAL CLEAR SKINCARE REVITALISING TONIC, £20 for 200ml (08705 934 934)
What they say: Revitilising Tonic maintains the natural moisture balance and helps enhance elasticity and freshness of the skin. Mineral salts and trace elements revitalise and rebalance the skin.
The Results: I had a facial recently with Crystal Clear products and view the brand as being both luxurious and effective – so I was pleased to be handed this bottle to test, which was contained in stylish monochrome packaging. I spritzed the product over my skin after applying my foundation – and although I felt like my face was drenched in moisture, it felt very pleasant and cooling. I was impressed when I looked in the mirror, as my skin didn’t looked soaked at all – instead, it had a lovely dewy appearance. My foundation seemed to last longer too, which was pretty impressive on a hot summer’s day! I’ve been recommending this product to friends – although it’s quite pricey, one spray is all you need every morning so it will last and last.
Best for: Spraying over makeup
PHILOSOPHY HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL DEEP SEA ULTRA-FINE HYDRATING MIST, £16 for 150ml (www.hqhair.com)
What they say: Put a spring in your step with this gorgeously fresh scent hydrating mist. Minerals from the deep sea help condition and refresh skin. Hyaluronic acid replenishes skin's moisture level. Beta-glucan helps promote overall skin health.
The Results: I love Philosophy packaging and I wasn’t disappointed by this green bottle – it definitely took pride of place on my dressing table! However, what I loved most about the product was the zingy, citrus fragrance when I applied it. Spraying it over my face was a refreshing, energising treat and I got a bit addicted to it! It works best early in the morning, when the combination of the citrus notes and cooling feeling on skin instantly woke me up – but I also loved applying it on hot days whenever I was feeling hot and sweaty. On a beauty level, I loved the fact that it contained Hyaluronic Acid, which keeps skin feeling lovely and hydrated.
Best for: Instant refreshment
GLO MINERALS GLOMOIST HYDRATION MIST FOR FACE, £14 for 59ml (0800 121811)
What they say: A blend of antioxidants and anti-aging benefits in a mist that hydrates instantly. Spray the skin before or after makeup application to set makeup and to refresh the skin throughout the day. Use when skin feels dry, when exposed to dry climate conditions or when skin needs an instant burst of hydration.
The Results: This product was handed to me the day before my holiday – and being only 59ml, I was able to take it in my hand luggage to refresh my skin throughout the flight. I only needed two sprays to cover and hydrate my whole face. It felt lovely and refreshing and had the luxurious scent of essential oils. My skin definitely felt better hydrated and suppler after applying it – and I looked forward to spritzing it over skin after a long day on the beach. In the evening, I also found that it helped to set makeup – but it absorbed instantly, leaving the skin looking even-toned matte. I would highly recommend it.
Best for: Taking on holiday
OLE HENRIKSEN PICK ME UP FACE MIST, £20 for 207ml (Selfridges and Harvey Nichols Nationwide)
What they say: Wonderful natural aromas make this tonic addictive! The gentle formulation oxygenates the skin while minimizing the pores and comforting the skin.
The Results: I loved the summery orange packaging – and the spray was just as bright and refreshing. I found it quite tricky to spray, so it took a few goes to cover my whole face, but the fragrance more than made up for that! The fruity concoction includes extracts of rose hips, blackberries, blueberries, peach and citrus fruits. I suffer from dry skin and the cooling spray made it instantly feel better hydrated, softer, and smoother. The spray promises to minimise the appearance of pores – and whilst I haven’t noticed this particularly, my complexion feels more balanced after a week of regularly applying it.
Best for: The summery scent
OMOROVICZA QUEEN OF HUNGARY MIST, £41.50 for 100ml (www.omorovicza.com)
What they say: Omorovicza, the range of mineral-rich and scientifically efficacious skincare from Hungary, introduces the Queen of Hungary Mist, a delightfully scented energising and hydrating facial spray which evens and refines the skin tone for a radiant complexion; ideal for summer skin.
The Results: I hadn’t heard about this brand before, but after testing this mist, I’m keen to try more products from the range. I would describe my skin as ‘combination’ and ‘mildly sensitive’ – and I found this mist soothing and very refreshing. The floral-scented spray absorbed within seconds, allowing me to carry on with applying my makeup. Afterwards, my skin had a lovely smooth texture and radiant glow – and I am definitely putting that down to the spray as it doesn’t usually happen! This is a pricey product – but if you can afford it, it is a brilliant luxury buy.
Best for: Boosting radiance
Treatment Review: KERASTASE CHORNOLOGISTE HAIR CONDITIONING TREATMENT, LISA SHEPHERD, LONDON (02.07.10)
What it promises: A multi-tasking, deep-conditioning treatment, which harnesses the properties of caviar together, sea water, vitamins, and essential fatty acid squalene to restore body and condition to colour-treated and highlighted hair, as well as tight scalps. The treatment transforms the condition and elasticity of hair, whilst also boosting and prolong life of colour.
What happens: After arriving at the stylish Mortimer Street salon, my stylist Jason took a look at my hair to work out exactly what was needed to give my over-processed locks a well-deserved beauty break. After a thorough shampoo and condition (nothing out of the ordinary here, but still a real treat), the caviar pearls were immersed in sea water to create an active conditioning paste that literally bathes hair and scalp with shine-boosting conditioners. Added vitamins A and E help protect hair from daily damage such as pollution - obvious when you’re working in the city - and UV rays that quickly fade colour. The paste was smoothed on my hair and got to work while I was left to enjoy a coffee. Half an hour later, I was ready to be blow-dried, but I noticed a difference to the feel of my hair as soon as I ran my fingers through it. The conditioning benefits really kicked in when my hair was dried.
The Results: I glanced in the mirror and witnessed my hair literally gleaming with health - something I’d not seen for months. The Kerastase Chronologiste Ritual can be repeated at home as a take-out version is available - but I didn’t need to use it for a good few weeks as my hair stayed looking and feeling soft and supple.
Price: £40, excluding blow dry.
Location: Lisa Shepherd London, 24 Mortimer Street, London W1T 3JP. 0207 4679560. Call 0800 316 4400 for national stockists.
Breaking News: JO MALONE INTRODUCE NEW QUARTET OF FRAGRANCES (02.07.10)
We’re big fans of Jo Malone here at The-Beauty-Pages.com – so when we heard that the luxury fragrance house were set to introduce a new quartet of fragrances on 1st July, we penned the date firmly in our diary.
Cologne Intense: The Art of Simplicity is made up of four addictive new colognes: Amber & Patchouli (seductive, spicy and woody), Oud & Bergamot (fresh, clean, crisp and citrusy), Rose Water & Vanilla (sweet, delicate and comforting) and Iris & White Musk (powdery, creamy, and musky).
Every Jo Malone fragrance is structured so it can either stand alone, or be blended and layered with other Jo Malone colognes for endless bespoke effects. This unique concept is at the heart of Jo Malone – and each Cologne Intense fragrance has been created with this in mind. Each scent works fabulously on its own, but is equally magnetic when mixed and layered.
Master Perfumer Christine Nagel, who worked with Jo Malone on Cologne Intense, explains: “With Cologne Intense, I chose to take potentially opposing ingredients of very high quality to create unexpected, yet harmonious fragrances…because when fragrance elicits an emotion, the story begins…”
Cologne Intense is available from 1st July 2010 at Jo Malone Sloane Street, Harrods, Selfridges, Brook Street, Brown Thomas Dublin, online at www.jomalone.co.uk or by calling 0870 0342411. The 100ml bottles will retail at £80 each.
Feature: THE NAIL FILES (02.07.10)
If you haven’t already nailed your look for summer then now is the time to learn how to shine.
COLOUR ME BEAUTIFUL
Still hankering after the days when high-fashion nails meant Uma Thurman wearing Rouge Noir in Pulp Fiction? Oh for the cult nail colour to be a shade of red.
Today, like everything style-related, the shades are coming faster than ever. Leading the fray is Chanel and its global creative director of beauty Peter Philips. He was the man responsible for women everywhere running around with green nails last summer, thanks to the surprisingly desirable Jade, which he followed by the deliciously different coffee-coloured, Particuliere. The colours are produced in limited numbers, making them even more wanted than a Chanel 2.55. The latest is an ice blue, called Riva unveiled at the Chanel Cruise collection in May. The versatile shade is perfect for lifting paler or darker skins as well as highlighting a golden tan. Good luck getting hold of one though... For autumn, the hot new hue will be a more vampish and rebellious violet plum called Paradoxal, £16.50 (Chanel Counters Nationwide) which promises to give hands an “enchanting finish”.
While Chanel has the it-factor, when it comes to application, durability and finish, Essie is still number one. For autumn, the brand is also offering a more palette to compliment fashion’s more restrained elegance. Our favourite is Merino Cool, £9.50 (www.nailsbymail.co.uk); a cashmere-rich mulberry that would work wonderfully with Chloe’s camel tailoring. Sew Psyched is also high on the list - a similarly sophisticated and unusual pewter. Essie Weingarten, the brand’s founder, says: “This fall, designers are mixing it up combining sheer fabrics with leather in deep, muted tones which are very alluring. I drew inspiration from the range of elegant, sanguine hues and camouflage tones.”
MANICURE MAGIC
Sometimes you come across a beauty secret so brilliant you want to keep it all to yourself. And so it was when we went to visit Russian manicurist, Tanya Grach at the eclectic but very welcoming Body & Soul Salon in St John’s Wood. The award-winning therapist who has just moved over from New York, took first place at the Professional Beauty Nail Technician Awards 2010, for best manicure, beating 133 other competitors. Leading nail expert Leighton Denny described her as, “by far the best in her field.”
Her manicure, £30, Body & Soul (020 7722 8086 or www.tanyagrach.com) is like watching a surgeon at work. She only uses her own personalised instruments, which are sent back to New York each month to be sharpened, for her highly precise hour-long treatment. The self-confessed perfectionist, shapes the nails, soaks and massages the hands, cleanly cutting the cuticles and polishing to an astonishing finish, which lasts for at least one week.
For a totally different experience, the The Cowshed’s Speedy Mani, £28 for 30 minutes (www.cowshedonline.com) is great if you want a treat while out shopping or with friends. You recline in a white leather throne, with a cup of green tea, and a huge pillow to hug while watching Sex and the City on a big screen. Nails are then shaped, tidied and painted to a glossy finish that lasted well. Book early though as it is very popular.
SHAPE UP
Tools are the secret to the perfect DIY manicure. Tweezerman has a great selection of metal cuticle removers – orange sticks simply do not cut it - and clippers (www.tweezerman.com). Whilst for the ultimate in glamour, Aspinal of London’s Calfskin Manicure Wallet, £125 (www.aspinaloflondon.com) is impossibly luxurious, but worth the investment - especially as you are saving all that money by manicuring at home.
For handcream, Neutrogena’s Norwegian Formula, £3.69 (www.boots.com) is a beauty bargain everyone should own. It gives a nourishing non-greasy finish that leaves skin feeling plump and hydrated. Lots of manicurists advise adding cuticle oil to your cream to give it an extra nourishing boost. It’s also a good idea to apply sunscreen to your hands when you are covering your face in the morning, as they are one of the first areas to age.
For nail files, Creative Nail Design’s Kanga Boards, £1.95 (0845 210 6060) are the most effective and gentle, giving a smooth finish. Remember to file in one direction to avoid weakening the nail. There is a good guide to nail shapes at www.sallyhansen.co.uk, which shows how to achieve everything from square/oval to almond, as well as tips on which ones offer more stability for your nail.
Finally, want to know the hottest nail shape on the catwalks? Make sure yours are short, sharp and square - as seen at the Prada, Antonio Berrardi, Oscar de la Renta and Loewe autumn shows.
FEET FIRST
When it comes to beautiful feet, there are just two words to remember - Medi-pedi. After all, what’s the point of polishing misshapen nails on hard calloused feet with ugly cracked heels?
For any tootsies that have seen better days, give them a step up with Margaret Dabbs’ Medi-Pedi at the new salon in New Cavendish Street in Marylebone, from £75 for 45 minutes (www.margaretdabbs.co.uk).. Unlike traditional pedicures, it’s performed by a professional podiatrist who can use a scalpel and sander to really tackle dry skin and remove ragged cuticles. It still feels very pampering however - and when we visited, the podiatrist gave us great advice about the reason for our recently-emerged bunions, which were apparently due to wearing ballet flats that cut off right at this bone. Our nails were rehydrated, shaped and buffed and then skin was left revitalised, glowing and baby soft using an industrial-style file and a host of electrical sanders. We then reclined in the salon to have a high quality paint job using their exclusive Rococo polish followed by a spell in the Oxygen pod. Happy feet.
However, when your soles are in need of maximum blissed-out moisture and some serious TLC, then Bliss Spa’s Hot Milk and Almond Pedicure, £60 for 60 minutes, (www.blisslondon.co.uk)
is delicious. We sat in front of our own flat screen TV – Sex and the City again, of course – with a ginger and carrot smoothie, while our feet were sanded with an intensive fiberglass callus fighter, plunged into a moisturising bath of milk, and nails and cuticles were polished, primped and painted. Well, if it’s good enough for Cleopatra…
GET TO THE POINT
Peeling, weak, brittle nails? Let us introduce you to Mavala’s Nail Shield, £8.95 (www.mavala.co.uk), arguably the most effective nail strengthening treatment on the market. It works in two stages; first a coat of nylon fibres, which literally create an extra binding to reinforce the nails is painted on, followed by a coat of sealer in a natural shade. The result is slightly grainy but once you apply your normal lacquer it’s glossy as usual and diamond hard.
For troubled cuticles, The Nail Doctor is also excellent. The Cuticle Gel, £6.99 (www.onestopbeauty.co.uk) gently softens and loosens the skin so that you can easily push it back without creating a ridge on the nail and contains fortified wheat proteins to condition and nourish. This should then be followed up with their Critical Cutical Care Oil, £6.99, which contains a rich blend of evening primrose and jojoba oils to hydrate and restore cuticles – plus, it smells delicious. If you really take your nail care seriously however, Orly has launched a Sunscreen, £9.25 (www.orly.co.uk)
, creating a barrier between the nail and damaging UV rays.
When it comes to strengthening your nails, the remover you use makes a big difference. Stick to an acetone-free remover such as Leighton Denny’s Essential Remover, £5.50 (www.lookfantastic.com) and try a non-greasy nourishing nail oil – Victoria Health’s best-selling 3-Phase Nail Oil and Buffer, £5.99 (www.victoriahealth.com) comes highly recommended. Boasting a handy roll-on of Chamomile and Grape Seed essential oil, which you apply after gently buffing the nails, it is great for preventing peeling,
Finally, when it comes to choosing base and topcoats there are two which the experts continually recommend. Creative Nail Design’s Stickey Base Coat, £7.95 (www.hqhair.com). Its green shade affords a truer colour to your polish and Seche Vite, £8.95 (www.nailsbymail.co.uk), whose magic consistency makes a durable, diamond-like finish.
SO LONG
Backstage at the shows for autumn, nail artists played as integral a part as the makeup artists. Everyone wants nails that mesmerise - whether that’s varsity-style lettering at Henry Holland or glad transfers at PPQ.
On the streets, the big news is the accent nail, otherwise known as Blackberry Bling. It can be a contrasting colour to the rest of your nails or a single crystal or Chanel CC transfer. A brand that knows all about kooky nail trends is cult East London salon Wah Nails. Once the need-to-know name in under-the-radar talons, the brand is going mainstream with its permanent concession at Topshop. Launched by Arena Homme Plus stylist, Sharmadean Reid, if you can picture it, they can paint it. You can be inspired by their amazing creations at www.wah-nails.com, from £15.
However, it’s becoming even easier to become a nail artist at home. All you need is a steady hand and a little creative flair. Sparkly Nails has a range of transfers, crystals and gems, which are easy to apply to the top of your regular polish, (sparkly-nails.co.uk).
Nubar, the leading LA lacquer that is formaldehyde and nasty chemical-free, has created a Two-way Pen, in glitter or solid colours, £5.95 each (www.beautyshed.co.uk) that makes intricate paint-jobs fool-proof - apparently Jessica Alba and Mischa Barton are both fans of the polish. Finally, Mavala has just launched its Matte Top Coat, £9.75 (www.johnlewis.com) great for changing the finish of all your favourite colours.
For getting the most professional finish, Amy Sachon, chief makeup artist at Barry M, says: “Use really thin tit-tape to outline the pattern you want to paint. As it is only slightly tacky, you can create more complicated effects by painting one section and waiting for it to dry then sticking the tape back over the dried varnish to apply your next colour. The tape will not remove the dried varnish. You can also make a stencil by folding a piece of paper in half and cutting a template, such as a heart, and placing it over the nail to paint over for a fun finish.”
Editor’s Letter (02.07.10)
It might be difficult to think ahead to autumn and winter months – especially whilst lazing in the garden with a magazine and glass of pimms – but the beauty industry is starting to prepare us for the next big seasonal trends. This week, we’re offering you the chance to get your hands on Garnier’s new Herbashine collection in Luscious Rainforest Browns – as apparently, when the weather starts to cool, there won’t be a more fashionable way to wear our hair than shiny, voluminous, and richly brunette. It’s an easy trend for me to pull off, as I turned brunette a year or so ago after ten years of being blonde (just pass me the volumising products and shine spray). But what about you? Will you take the brunette plunge? If so, you may as well enter our competition by clicking here.
Herbal Essences. Talking of hair… If you like wearing your locks straight, you should definitely get your hands on Herbal Essences new Seductively Straight collection (from X?). The Shampoo, Conditioner, Heat Protective Cream and Intensive Mask smell stunning and make it impressively easy to pull off a poker-straight style. Hair is left feeling and looking richly conditioned – in fact, the Intensive Mask left my hair feeling so soft that, as I ran my hands through it, I could easily have mistaken it for silk. Better still, I didn’t even need to switch on my ghd’s. Available at Boots Nationwide.
Liz Earle. If you’re as much of a fan of Liz Earle skincare as I am, you need to get practicing with your video camera… The brand is giving you the chance to win a year’s supply of its acclaimed Cleanse & Polish cleanser, plus a Signature Facial at the London Treatment Rooms (I’ve been lucky enough to experience the treatment and it’s something I would highly, highly recommend!) All you have to do is upload a video onto YouTube and explain why you love Cleanse & Polish in less than 3 minutes. The top 5 videos will make it onto www.lizearle.com where customers will pick the winner! Best of British luck to you! Click here to enter.
Karine Jackson. There are few better ways to start the day that with a trip to a salon for a blow dry. If I could afford it, I’d pop in every morning Anna Wintour style. So my ears pricked up when I heard that Karine Jackson, based in London’s Covent Garden, are offering the ‘£15 Budget Blow Dry. For that affordable sum, you will experience a hair wash with luxury products (Kerastase or Organic Care Systems), a head massage, a fabulous blow dry, and complimentary refreshments (including, believe it or not, a glass of wine). I hope former London Hairdresser of the Year Karen Jackson has cleared her diary – as I predict her salon will get pretty busy. 0207 8360300.
BREMENN. It made me laugh when I caught sight of BREMENN’s Boob Job in a Box (£72), but the products inside are deadly serious. The three-step system promises to ‘life the look of your bustline, accentuate the look of your cleavage and totally round out the look of your bust profile.’ They are impressive claims – and if it works (and I can’t claim to have tried it myself) it would be a sound investment for those considering the surgeon’s knife. Start with the Bust Plumping Catalyst Cream, move onto the Toning Emulsion, and finish with the Lifting and Toning Program. Pamela Anderson, eat your heart out. Exclusively at Harvey Nichols.
Wahanda. Finally, if you still haven’t subscribed to receive Wahanda’s daily mob deal, you are missing out. Every morning, the spa website emails with a dirt-cheap spa or beauty deal – and if enough people buy it, the deal is on. I have now purchased three deals and I think I’m a little addicted. In fact, I enjoyed the first of my mob deals – where I paid just £30 for £100 worth of beauty treatments at Nougat London – last weekend and I felt incredibly spoilt. Next up, the nibbling fish pedicure (£12, reduced from £30) – no, I’m not making that up, so wish me luck! Sign up to receive the daily mob deal at www.wahanda.com
Blog: LEADING COSMETIC DENTIST DR STEPHEN HENNESSY ANSWERS A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT TEETH WHITENING (02.07.10)
1) What methods are there for teeth whitening?
Either “in surgery” or at home methods are available. In surgery uses a light/laser to speed up the process and takes about an hour. The at home method uses very thin bespoke moulds containing a special gel which are worn for an hour a day for 7 days
2) Which method is best?
Most dentists find the at home treatment more predictable, less uncomfortable ,gives better and longer lasting results as the special gel is in contact with the teeth for a longer time overall a deeper, more thorough whitening is achieved
3) Is it harmful to the teeth?
No. Studies have shown the whitening process does as much damage as a can of cola. The gel is a form of peroxide and works by oxygen bubbles penetrating the layers of the teeth and breaking down the stain/discolouration.
4) How white can the teeth go?
This varies from person to person but everyone will see a difference. Some people’s teeth can take longer than others to reach the final shade and not everyone will achieve the same end shade as this depends on the individuals teeth .However, the majority of people will see a very significant change.
5) Is it painful?
Only mild sensitivity is generally felt for 24 hours after whitening. The “power “ (in surgery) whitening can cause more severe , longer lasting sensitivity.
6) How long does the new colour last?
The new colour will last for many years but is dependent on oral hygiene and if the diet is rich in coloured food/drink when the colour may fade quicker. Most people will top up the treatment to maintain the colour by wearing the moulds for a few hours every 6 months or so
7) Does it whiten crowns and fillings?
No. Any method of whitening only works on natural tooth
8) Any downsides?
Not really, it has been used for many years and done correctly causes no harm. However, do only let a dentist whiten your teeth, as it is illegal for anyone else to do so because there have been cases of permanent harm being caused to teeth and gums. These cases have arisen when unqualified people using different materials have performed the whitening, which has caused the enamel to dissolve or gums to recede. These problems cannot be reversed
9) How much does it cost?
On average the cost is around £300 for the at-home method, with the laser whitening around £500.Prices a lot cheaper than this will generally be from someone who is not a dentist and hence not properly insured and more likely to be using inferior/dangerous products.
10) Will I get the same result from whitening toothpastes?
No. Only professional whitening will give you noticeable results. Some toothpastes may remove a little more staining than others but none will significantly change the colour of your natural tooth structure.
